Not like my mother : truth and the author in creative nonfiction

    No full text
This exegesis examines how a writer can effectively negotiate the relationship between author, character, fact and truth, in a work of Creative Nonfiction. It was found that individual truths, in a work of Creative Nonfiction, are not necessarily universal truths due to individual, cultural, historical and religious circumstances. What was also identified, through the examination of published Creative Nonfiction, is a necessity to ensure there are clear demarcation lines between authorial truth and fiction. The Creative Nonfiction works examined, which established this framework for the reader, ensured an ethical relationship between author and audience. These strategies and frameworks were then applied to my own Creative Nonfiction

The renewal of Islamic education is a demand of the needs of the Islamic education world today. Seeing the backwardness and underdevelopment of Muslims today, the purpose of Islamic education reform is to try to leave the old mindset that is not in accordance with the progress of the times and strive to gain aspects that strengthen to adjust to the progress of the times. Islamic education is actually a balance between the world and the hereafter, a balance between the knowledge of revelation and knowledge of human endeavor, and the balance of science and technology. Azyumardi Azra is a well-known figure in the understanding of Islamic renewal. He gave birth to many works for Islamic education. Azra's own education is more about teaching. This study aims to describe the idea of modernization of Islamic education according to Azyumardi Azra and to describe the strategy of modernizing Islamic education according to Azyumardi Azra. This research is a qualitative research which refers to library research. Which refers to books, literary works related to the Modernization of Islamic Education. The approach or point of view used by the author in conducting this research is a factual-historical approach. The results of this study can be concluded that the idea of modernization of Islamic education according to Azyumardi Azra is associated with the challenges of the 21st century and the era of globalization, the progress of science and technology. In order to achieve the desired educational goals, of course it is necessary to have a strategy that is done so that Islamic education is not left behind. The modernization strategy according to Azyumardi Azra is that it needs to develop a dual approach strategy that aims to integrate a number of short-term situational approaches with a long-term conceptual approach. That is, the ideas or efforts developed by Azyumardi Azra in dealing with the problem of Islamic education must be in accordance with the current situation or condition of Islamic education

Disertasi ini membahas pemikiran politik Islam tentang relasi Islam dan negara. Objek riset ini adalah pemikiran Abdullahi Ahmed an-Na?im dalam karyanya Islam and the Secular State (2008).

    No full text
Islamic boarding schools are considered as backward and less participatory traditional institutions, but have great potential in terms of mobilizing local resources, potential sources of labor, and sources of political support. With the development of increasingly advanced times, Islamic boarding schools need to modernize holistically institutionally, curriculum and learning methods. For this reason, the author tries to reveal the modernization of Islamic education according to Azyumardi Azra at the Al-Aqobah Islamic boarding school, Jombang. The results of this study found that the institutional modernization of the Islamic education system at the al-Aqobah Islamic boarding school still adheres to the classic pesantren tradition while at the same time innovating with modernity. Thus making the Al-Aqobah Islamic boarding school transform into a hybrid, namely combining salaf (traditional) and khalaf (modern). Modernization of the curriculum at the Al-Aqobah Islamic boarding school has at least fulfilled religious education (tafaqquh fi al-din), madrasah, formal schools, and skills education. Meanwhile, the modernization of learning methods has also used a variety of up-to-date technological devices to support learning objectives and the use of contemporary teaching materials and learning media.

Toxicity mechanism of anthropogenic water contaminants: drinking water disinfection by-products (haloacetic acids) and particle associated contaminants from sealcoats (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) in lake sediments

    No full text
Drinking water disinfection was one of the major public health accomplishments of 20th century. Water disinfection helps in reducing waterborne diseases like typhoid fever, cholera, and hepatitis A. However, chemical water disinfection also produces unwanted toxic chemicals, known as water disinfection by-products (DBPs). Most of the DBPs are cytotoxic, neurotoxic, genotoxic, mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic but the toxicity mechanism is not completely understood. Therefore, the objectives of this dissertation were to i) understand the toxicity mechanisms and identify the molecular targets of all the regulated and non-regulated haloacetic acids (HAAs) water DBPs, ii) to differentiate among the toxicity mechanisms of mono-, di-, and triHAAs, iii) to evaluate the toxicity potential of chlorinated and chloraminated wastewater effluents, and iv) to evaluate the mutagenicity potential of the particle associated contaminants such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with coal tar and soot, extracted from lake core sediments. Studies based on the toxicity mechanism of HAAs water DBPs demonstrated that monoHAAs were the strongest inhibitors of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) where, di-, and triHAAs were weaker inhibitors. MonoHAAs greatly reduced the ATP contents of the cells. Unlike monoHAAs, triHAAs increased the cellular ATP levels as compared to the negative controls. Exogenous pyruvate supplementation rescued cells from monoHAA-induced DNA damage and ATP depletion. These results confirmed that monoHAA-induced genotoxicity was due to GAPDH inhibition. HAAs not only affected the GAPDH kinetics and disturbed the cellular energy homeostasis but also increased pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC) activity. Increased PDC activity by monoHAAs was due to changes in metabolite ratios e.g., ATP/ADP, and NADH/NAD ratio but the increase induced by di-, and triHAAs was due to the inhibition of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK). Results demonstrated that HAA-induced toxicity is due to disruption in cellular energy homeostasis. This research demonstrated that there was a difference among the HAA-induced toxicity mechanisms and their molecular targets. MonoHAAs had an indirect effect on mitochondrial metabolism by inhibiting GAPDH, affecting the generation of pyruvate, inducing oxidative stress and reducing the final output of mitochondria in the form of ATP. Among monoHAAs, the rank order of toxicity was iodoacetic acid > bromoacetic acid >> chloroacetic acid (IAA > BAA >> CAA). This toxicity pattern was directly correlated with the inhibition of GAPDH kinetics, ATP depletion, and PDC activation. Whereas, di- and triHAAs induced toxicity by directly affecting mitochondrial metabolism by PDK inhibition, which led to PDC activation. The toxicity potential of chlorinated and chloraminated wastewater effluents extracted with XAD-8 and XAD-4 resins was evaluated. For chlorinated water, the organic extracts eluted from XAD-8 were more cytotoxic than that of the chloraminated wastewater extracts. However, the XAD-4 extracts of the chlorinated wastewaters and chloraminated wastewaters did not show any significance difference. Unlike the cytotoxicity analyses, the chloraminated wastewater XAD-8 extracts showed a higher genotoxic effect in mammalian cells than the XAD-4 extracts. Thus the major cytotoxicity and genotoxicity components in wastewater effluents were associated with hydrophobic acid fractions as compared to the transphilic acid fractions. The mutagenicity evaluation of the coal tar and soot associated polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from lake sediments demonstrated that the coal tar and soot extracts were not direct acting mutagens but needed S9 microsomal activation. It was also found that coal tar extracts induced a higher rate of base pair substitution mutations as compared to the induction of frameshift mutations. Soot extracts induced a relatively higher rate of frameshift mutations as compared to the coal tar extract frameshift mutation rate.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2018-12-01The student, Azra Dad, accepted the attached license on 2016-08-01 at 18:20.The student, Azra Dad, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2016-08-01 at 21:48.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2016-11-07 at 15:18.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10097 on 2017-02-28 at 14:35:47Made available in DSpace on 2017-03-01T16:36:36Z (GMT). A research report submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Creative Writing to the Faculty of Humanities, School of Literature, Language and Media, University of the Witwatersrand, 2022This MA (Creative Writing) project, titled The State, comprises two components, a novel and a reflective essay. The novel, which is the primary creative component, is experimental in form and is organised by means of short chapters. These chapters sketch out the lives of three main characters – Azra, Haroun and Jerry M – over the same period in Johannesburg. Azra is a lonely chartered accountant who is burdened by religious obligations and having to live with her ageing mother; Haroun is a government economist who acknowledges his ennui but is unable to do anything about it; and Jerry M is a drug-addicted street thug with a calling towards a darkness that he sees as his deliverance. The three characters’ lives are connected in the latter part of the novel by the death of Azra’s mother. The novel is written mostly in the third person, with the exception of the first-person accounts of Jerry M and the Person/Spirit in the bush who sees Jerry M through a drug portal. The novel explores various themes, the most prominent being loneliness and isolation, ennui, violence, and sexual identity. The reflective component – titled Pop, Paranoia and a Pornographic Nexus – is a meditation on the production of pop music and how it relates to the author’s processes, the humour inherent in paranoia, and how the author found himself learning from a pornographic spectacle exacerbated by the COVID pandemicTL (2023
