Tender criticism – the tender metaphysics of Adrian Gleń

    No full text
The sketch is an attempt to grasp the interpretation of the critical discourse of Adrian Gleń – the poet of “Topos”, professor at the Institute of Literary Studies at the University of Opole, author of numerous interpretations and critical discussions of recent poetry. The critic has articulated it both in Istnienie i literaturze [Existence and Literature] (Sopot 2010), Czułości [Tenderness] (Sopot 2014), and especially in his latest volume of essays on contemporary literary criticism, Krytyka i metafizyka [Criticism and Metaphysics] (Sopot 2017). In the latter, the author clearly crystallises his aim – to indicate the place of criticism in contemporary culture, the reasons for the decline of its authority, but also its prospects. A recipe for bringing contemporary criticism out of its crisis may be – as proposed by Adrian Gleń – “sensitive criticism”, which treats poetry as a “metaphysical task” and requires the critic to adopt the attitude of a philosopher-anthropologist-hermeneutic, as well as a mystic.MAŁGORZATA BURZKA-JANIK, dr, literaturoznawczyni, polonistka, adiunkt na Uniwersytecie Opolskim; współpracownik Katedry Badań Filologicznych „Wschód – Zachód” na Wydziale Filologicznym Uniwersytetu w Białymstoku; prezes opolskiego Oddziału Towarzystwa Literackiego im. The limits of literary knowledge. On some new theories of interdisciplinarity (including one example) The paper consists of the review of a number of academic approaches to interdisciplinary research as represented by the Polish theorists of literature (Andrzej Hejmej, Michał P. Markowski, Ryszard Nycz). On the example taken from Tadeusz Nowak’s novel A jak królem, a jak katem będziesz, the author attempts to identify the nature of the close relations between anthropological and literary discourses, where the border line between them lies, and, consequently, what benefits for literary studies stem from anthropological readings

Insurance for the Literary Studies (Remarks on the Margins of Poetyka doświadczenia [Poetics of Experience] by Ryszard Nycz)

    No full text
The text is an attempt to indicate innovatory terminological solutions and their critical reception of the so-called cultural theory of literature, being formed in the last decade, on the basis of the last proposal included in Poetyka doświadczenia (“Poetics of Experience”) by Ryszard Nycz. The author of the essay concentrates on the fundamental humanistic notions, for example experiencing, happening, paradigmaticality, interdisciplinarity in the studies into literature or intertextuality, which, from this viewpoint, are subject to redefinition and a kind of conceptualization. A separate place in these considerations is occupied by the comparison of the stance of the author of Sylwy współczesne with the recent writings of Michał Paweł Markowski and the argument with the analysis of specific case studies included in the ending of Poetics of Experience.</p

Człowiek i bycie. O ograniczaniu podmiotowości w późnej twórczości Czesława Miłosza

The text tackles the question of the phenomenon of being, one of the crucial issues in Mitosz's late poetry. The author analyzes Mitosz's various strategies of constructing and deconstructing the subject, and interprets them as conscious acts which make man's perception of Being possible. At the article's core stands the poet's inter-semiotic dialogue with Martin Heidegger's philosophy of language as set around the question of the articulation of existence in the poetic word.</span

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Między pisaniem a milczeniem. O esejach Herty Müller z perspektywy polskiego czytelnika

    No full text
Artykuł poświęcony jest prawdzie pracy z językiem w esejach Herty Müller. Autora interesuje to, w jaki sposób i dokąd prowadzi Noblistkę jej doświadczenie pierwotnej nieprzystawalności słowa do rzeczy, jak rzutuje ono na widzenie samego fenomenu rozumienia literatury, jaki obraz pisania wywodzi w swojej refleksji autorka Nizin. Uwagi Müller analizowane są w kontekście filozofii języka źródłowego. Takie komparatystyczne ujęcie prowadzi do próby określenia tego, jakie formuły tożsamości języka i rzeczywistości odnajdziemy w esejach niemieckiej Noblistki. The paper focuses on the truth of language work in Herta Müller’s essays. The author is interested in what way and where the experience of the primal discrepancy between a word and a thing leads the essayist, how it affects her understanding of literature, and what kind of a picture of writing stems from her considerations. Müller’s observations are analysed in the context of the philosophy of the source language. Such a comparative approach leads to an attempt of determining what formulas of language identity and reality can be found in the essays of the German Noble prize-winner.
