Learning from biophysical heterogeneity: inductive use of case studies for maize cropping systems in Central America
Global society has become conscious that efforts towards securing food production will only be successful if agricultural production increases are obtained through mechanisms that ensure active regeneration of the natural resource base. Production options should be targeted in the sense of that their suitability to improve agricultural production and maintain natural resources is evaluated prior to their introduction. Biophysical targeting evaluates production options as a function of the spatial and temporal variability of climate conditions, in interaction with soil, crop characteristics and agronomic management strategies. This thesis contributes to the development of a system-based methodology for biophysical targeting. Cropping system simulation and weather generator tools are interfaced to geographical information systems. Inductive use of two case studies - a green manure cover crop and reduced tillage with residue management - helped to develop the methodology. Insight is gained into the regional potential for and the soil and climate conditions under which successful introduction of these production options may be achieved. The resulting information supports regional stakeholders involved in agriculture in their analysis and discussion, negotiation and decision-making concerning where to implement production systems. This process can improve the supply of appropriate agricultural production practices that enhance production and conserve soil and water resources
Investments in education and welfare in a two-sector, random matching economy
"We consider a random matching model where heterogeneous agents choose optimally to invest time and real resources in education. Generically, there is a steady state equilibrium, where some agents, but not all of them, invest. Regular steady state equilibria are constrained inefficient in a strong sense. The Hosios (1990) condition is neither necessary, nor sufficient, for constrained efficiency. We also provide restrictions on the fundamentals sufficient to guarantee that equilibria are characterized by overeducation (or undereducation), present some results on their comparative statics properties, and discuss the nature of welfare improving policies."
Abstract: Our purpose is to reflect the conditions of liberty based on the theory of civil conflict in Machiavelli. To accomplish this purpose, we analyzed two social sectors which are faced in every city, the big ones and the people (grandi and plebs), that correspond to two moods (umori) of heterogeneous feature: the big ones that wish to master the people and the people who only want to live in liberty. From this natural and non-eliminable conflict, Machiavelli conceives social relations in dissent, slightly away from concordia ordinum. There is, with this assumption, a relative political equality in the dynamics of the own confrontation of these moods that, when received and recreated by republican institutions, are translated into laws and liberty that benefit the entire city. The civil conflict theory, when showing certain autonomy from the Polybian model of anacyclosis, still very reproduced by the tradition of political thought, ended up achieving the will of the people - next to the big ones mood - generating aristocratic reactions to a presumable republicanism popular of the author - Francesco Guicciardini confirms this perspective. The challenge is to understand what aspects effectively compete in this process which is, since the abolishment of good and positive civil conflict, to a coexistence determined by relations of subordination and servitude (vivere servo). Mobilizing some central chapters of Discourses on Titus Livy's first ten books [Discorsi sopra la prima deca di Tito Livio] and Florentine Histories [Istorie Fiorentine] - but not without occasional references to other works of the author who subsidize the discussion - we showed that the demand for extraordinary actions (straordinari) in situations of corrupted republics, is due to the interference of unequal and unfair relations between different segments. To the inequality in these relations is attributed inflection of the political content of moods toward aspects and phenomena of an economic nature. This is to show, in Machiavelli, that the core of the civil conflict theory is permeated by a social and economic cleavage suggesting a more flexible measure of reading his own theory of civil conflict and liberty
Automation and Process Control have became strong in industrial and infrastructure systems, where it is important to know a variety of control techniques and plant model to improve performance and productivity aspects. This dissertation presents a study, analysis and design for the GMV (Generalized Minimum Variance) control technique by using plants with certain difficulty and of interest for the industry and for the author that are been used or faced in the professional activity. Various GMV control strategies are developed and used to control four types of plants with complexities as dead time, non-minimum phase with integration, oscillatory and non-linear. The numerical environment for simulation is MatLab and essays with Shunta performance index are shown

The images in this digital version are all that our scanners could extract.Anton Stadler (June 28, l753--June 15, 1812), clarinet virtuoso of Vienna during the late eighteenth century, is credited, together with Theodor Lotz with the invention of the basset clarinet. The basset clarinet, or bass clarinet as it was also called at that time, is a clarinet in the key of B-flat or A which has additional keywork for the written pitches of small e-flat, d, c-sharp and c. Very few of these instruments were made and no extant copies have been found in this century. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first details the musical life of Anton Stadler and to a lesser extent his brother Johann, also a clarinetist. The second chapter examines sources contemporary to Stadler's time in an effort to obtain more precise information concerning the basset clarinet. Works written specifically for the basset clarinet are discussed in the third chapter, and twentieth century basset clarinetists and their modern prototype instruments are presented in the final chapter. The thesis includes facsimiles of documents, photographs and music that pertain to the topic from both the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. Mozart wrote his Concerto for Clarinet in A, K. 622, for basset clarinet. The Fragments for clarinet and string quartet, K. 5l6c, Anh. 91 and K. 581, Anh. 88; the arias “Parto, parto, ma tub en mio” from Clemenza di Tito and “Ah! Io veggio …” from Cosi fan Tutte, K. 588, are also intended for basset clarinet. Mozart's friend and student, F. X. Sussmayr wrote two sketches for a Concerto in D for this unique instrument. Writing for basset clarinet also appears in the cadenzas to a concerto for two clarinets by Franz Tausch. In addition to the above, there are instances where basset clarinet may have been originally intended, but the music was altered in publication for the normal clarinet range. In September of 1972, the author received a travel grant to Europe from the Community Trust of New York City. At this time the autograph to F. X. Sussmayr's Concerto in D was examined at the British Library, and a copy of it was secured. In Geneva, Switzerland, a five-keyed clarinet made by Theodor Lotz was photographed. This clarinet is the only clarinet of Lotz extant today and photographs of it, as well as pencil rubbings of the maker's stamp appear in the body of this paper
Classification of authors for a recommendation process integrated to a scientific meta-search engine
The search for scientific production on the web has become a challenge, both in terms of volume, variety and updating speed. It requires tools that help the user to obtain relevant results when executing a query. Within these tools, this team has developed a specific meta-search engine for the area of computer science. In its evolution, it is intended to include recommendations from authors for each of its users’ queries. The generation of such recommendations requires a method capable of classifying the authors in order to define their inclusion and position in a list of suggestions for the end-user. This paper presents a method that fulfills this objective, after being evaluated and having obtained results that allow to propose its inclusion in later development of the recommendation system.Viloria, AmelecCrissien Borrero, Tito José-will be generated-orcid-0000-0002-7459-7941-600Pineda, Omar-will be generated-orcid-0000-0002-8239-3906-600Pertuz, LucianaOrellano, NatalyVargas Mercado, Carlos-will be generated-orcid-0000-0002-5436-0568-60
Policy research on migration and development
This is a survey and analysis-with commentary-of migration issues and the related development policies for the sending countries."Migration and development"is considered an unsettled and unresolved area for good reason. The policy issues are surprisingly deep and run to basic issues such as the nature of development as opposed to simple poverty reduction. North-north migration (between industrial countries), south-south migration (between or within developing countries), and north-south migration (from developing to industrial countries) are all covered although the paper focuses on the north-south variety. Attention is paid to the question of the dynamic mechanism underlying migration being one of convergence or divergence. Very often the policy issues push one outside what would be narrowly considered as"migration studies."For example, policies to reduce the brain drain go directly to the issue of educational reform in developing countries while policies to increase the developmental impact of remittances quickly carry one into the nature of business development itself. Ronald Dore's ideas on educational reform are outlined as a policy approach to the brain drain problem. Jane Jacobs'ideas on development are outlined in greater length as they are little known in development economics and yet directly address the policy issues raised by migration and development.Banks&Banking Reform,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Human Migrations&Resettlements,Voluntary and Involuntary Resettlement,Public Health Promotion,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Banks&Banking Reform,Human Migrations&Resettlements,Voluntary and Involuntary Resettlement,Municipal Financial Management
