In the Kanuden trilogy, aimed at young readers, Moussa Konaté describes the valiant struggle of the eponymous young hero against the tyrants who rule over humanity. His victory marks the arrival of a new world, one of freedom and justice. This work by the Malian author thus reveals a new dimension of the African political novel which finds its expression in the construction of possible utopias. By tackling violence, a sensitive theme in children’s literature, Moussa Konaté takes the path of allegory through fantasy, but also articulates reflections on power, the desire for power, and political evil

Moussa Konaté is an author who takes his readers on a journey from one genre to another, from one universe to another, and whose work seems to be characterized by variety. What do the Kanuden trilogy for children and « Les enquêtes du commissaire Habib » (« The investigations of detective Habib ») have in common ? The addressee, the aesthetic intentions, everything seems a priori different. However, a common thread links the two heroes : both carry a vision of society and an ideology specific to their author. Comparing these two figures in Moussa Konaté’s work enables us to understand how his work, beyond its generic diversity, aims toward the same goal : being a mirror of black African societies by addressing their own issues and reflecting on their own singularity, their richness, but also their mental blocks and complex relationship with the West. From fantasy to detective novels, the same themes are found : power, submission, revolt, but also beliefs, traditions and superstition. The heroes, like their creator, are constantly searching for balance between loyalty to a culture and the refusal to be imprisoned by it
Le Bédouin, le voyageur et le philosophe
Sarga Moussa : The Bedouin, the traveller and the philosopher.
In the 18th Century a new image of the Bedouin appears in French literature, in both travel accounts and works with anthropological or encyclopaedic ambitions. The nomadic Arabs, previously presented as frightening bloodthirsty beings, now more and more appear as free, hospitable people, living in the simple style of the ancient patriarchs. The first traces of this change, which is linked to the réévaluation of Islam in the early Enlightenment, can be found in d'Herbelot's Bibliothèque orientale (1697), d'Arvieux's Journey to Palestine (1717) or Boulan-villiers Life of Mohamed (1730). This image is, however, ambivalent and Turpin, the author of the article Arabes in the 1776 Supplement to the Encyclopédie, alternates beteween Rousseauistic praise for a people with 'natural' virtues and criticism of a society which tolerates stealing. It is this paradox which makes it possible, in the Romantic period, to project onto the Bedouin values like generosity and revolt, thus allowing a new reflection on humans as double beings.Moussa Sarga. On the use of the diffusive wave for modelling extreme flood events with overbank flow in the floodplain
Corresponding author. fax: +33 4 67 63 26 14. E-mail address: [email protected] (R. Moussa).International audienceCatastrophic flood events are frequently chosen as reference events, for modelling the impact of scenarios of river bank remediation to prevent inundations. However, these rare events are poorly understood due to the poor hydrological knowledge available, and due to the lack of data. A model for routing flood events adapted to the few available data during historical extreme events was developed. The model subdivides the floodplain into cells linked to the main channel, and the diffusive wave model with overbank flow was used to route floods in the main channel and through the inundation floodplain. The linearized equations are resolved by an implicit numerical scheme to ensure stability and convergence. The flood event of October 1958 on the Herault river, which caused one of the largest inundations Southern France during the XXth century, was studied as the application case. As input data, the model requires a Digital Elevation Model, geographical map and cross sections in order to subdivide the channel network into cells. The model parameters are the Manning roughness coefficients in the main channel and in the floodplain. The model was applied to simulate the flood event of 1958, and was validated on other flood events under similar hydro-meteorological conditions. Then, the model was applied to quantify the impact of scenarios of river bank remediation. Fourteen scenarios of construction of dams, embankments, or coupling both dams and embankments, were modelled. The model simulates hydrographs in the main channel, the water depth, the area and the volume on both right and left banks of the floodplain cells. Results show that the model developed herein, with relatively little hydraulic modelling, is well adapted to simulate extreme flood events, and is useful for environmental managers to study the impact of river bank remediation on inundation
