    Andrzej Abramowicz jako historyk archeologii

    No full text
The article analyzes the contribution of Andrzej Abramowicz, one of the most prominent historians of archaeology, to the development of this subdiscipline. Abramowicz, drawing inspiration from Marian Henryk Serejski, broke away from the strictly chronicle-style approach to the history of archaeology, characteristic of his predecessors. His works, such as Wiek archeologii or Historia archeologii polskiej, offer a synthetic account of the history of Polish archaeology, taking into consideration the shifting research paradigms and the socio-political context in which archaeology evolved. The introduction of the article outlines the early interest in the history of archaeology in Poland, serving as an introduction to the main topic of the text, which focuses on Abramowicz’s path to pursuing studies in this field and a characteristic of his most significant achievements.

    Perfecting Patent Prizes

A number of commentators in recent years have suggested permitting holders of intellectual property rights to give up these rights in exchange for cash prizes from the government. In this Article, Professor Abramowicz shows that each of the proposals has significant flaws that would make implementation impractical and argues that no single perfect formula or algorithm for determining the size of prizes exists. A prize system is nonetheless worth pursuing because it could increase social welfare significantly by eliminating deadweight loss. Professor Abramowicz recommends a relatively simple approach that would complement rather than replace the patent system. The proposal is to establish an agency to distribute a fund that would be used to reward corporate efforts to reduce the monopoly effects of patent rights. As long as there is a substantial delay between the activities reducing deadweight loss and the granting of prizes, and as long as the rights to future prizes are tradable, granting of wide agency discretion has significant advantages and few drawbacks. Even assuming the agency is likely to do a poor job of distributing prizes, the system will be efficient if no biases in granting prizes are predictable. After addressing a variety of issues concerning the design of a prize system, Professor Abramowicz offers several potential applications for patent, copyright, an

He defended its principles even in the interwar period, when Poland was dominated by the policy of assimilation of national minorities and relations with Lithuania had the character of a cold war. Thanks to Abramowicz, Przegląd Wileński [Vilnius Review] (1921–1938) became the last bastion of the idea of krajowość, actively popularising it in the public life of the Vilnius Region. Abramowicz unwaveringly defended the idea of the political independence of the Belarusian-Lithuanian Lands and the decision of its future by the representatives of all indigenous nations. Abramowicz’s life and work, his publications in Przegląd Wileński prove that against all political and national-cultural realities, the idea of krajowość as an idea of harmonious coexistence of the nations of the historical Lithuania was popular and found new supporters
