Secondary School Students' Attitude towards Arabic Components of Islamic Studies in Kwara and Oyo States of Nigeria
The Effect of Concept-Mapping on Secondary School Students’ Performance in Islamic Studies
This study examined the effect of concept-mapping instructional method on secondary school students’ performance in Islamic Studies in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study employed a pre-test, post-test control group, quasi-experimental design. The sample comprised Senior Secondary School class 2 (SSS 2) students purposively drawn from three secondary schools in Oyo State. The students in experimental and control groups were in their normal classroom setting (intact classes) and were not reorganized. Experimental group consisted of 45 students exposed to concept-mapping while the control group consisted of 48 students who received no treatment. Data were analysed using t-test, standard deviation and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). Findings of the study showed that there was a significant difference in the performance of experimental and control groups after the treatment. Concept-mapping had significant effect on students’ performance with mean score of x=53.92. Effect of Conventional method was x=22.62. No significant difference existed in the performance in Islamic Studies of students exposed to concept-mapping based on gender, t-cal.( 0.1469 < 2.021) at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The study concluded that concept-mapping instructional method positively improved students’ understanding of Islamic Studies and invariably their performance. The study recommended that concept-mapping should be adopted as a teaching method of Islamic Studies, and that teachers of the subject should improve their pedagogical skills through seminars and workshops
Parenting Styles and Secondary School Students’ Attitudes towards Islamic Studies in Kwara Central Senatorial District, Nigeria
Abstract. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of parenting styles on secondary school students' attitude towards learning Islamic Studies in Kwara Central Senatorial District, Nigeria. Questionnaire and Pro-forma were used to collect data on parenting styles and students' attitude towards learning Islamic Studies. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to select 300 students across the sampled public schools. Four research questions were raised and three null hypotheses were formulated and tested in the study. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count Mean, Standard Deviation and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient statistics to answer the research questions and test the hypotheses formulated in the study. The findings showed that most of the students disposed negatively to learning Islamic Studies. It was also found that parenting styles adopted have influence on the attitude of the students towards learning Islamic Studies. In addition, it was observed that students from authoritative parenting have positive attitude than students from other parenting styles. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that teachers should take cognizance of the fact that students are from various homes and with different parenting styles thereby catering for the individual differences that may affect their attitudes to learning Islamic Studies. Parents should adopt authoritative parenting style to enhance optimal performance of the students. In addition, there is also the need for provision of enlightenment for parents on the parenting style they should adopt in order to assist their children to dispose positively to learning.

Assessment of Teacher's Knowledge of Computer Software for Teaching Islamic Studies in Senior Secondary Schools in Kwara State, Nigeria
The study examined availability and accessibility of computer software in teaching of Arabic in Secondary Schools in Kwara State. To examine the accessibility of computer software for teaching Islamic Studies in Senior Secondary Schools in Kwara state. Two research questions and two research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The target population was 360 Islamic Studies Teachers in 50 Senior Secondary Schools. The sample was 186 Islamic studies Teachers in Senior Secondary schools purposively selected for the study. The researcher’s self-designed instrument titled “Accessibility and Utilisation of the Computer Software Questionnaire (AUCSQ) was used to collect data from the respondents. The reliability coefficient of the AUCSQ was 0.86. Frequency and Percentage were used to present the demographic information of the respondents and to answer the research questions while the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to test hypotheses. The study revealed a significant correlation between the availability of computer software and the teaching of Islamic Studies in Senior Secondary Schools in Kwara State. The study found a significant negative correlation between the accessibility of computer software and the teaching of Islamic Studies in Senior Secondary Schools in Kwara State. The study found that the lack of access to computer software negatively impacts the teaching of Islamic studies in secondary schools in Kwara State. It recommended that school management should provide adequate computer software for teachers and that Islamic studies teachers should acquire computer skills for easy access to the software
Teachers’ Quality and Secondary School Students’ Academic Performance in Islamic Studies in Ilorin, Nigeria
The development of any society is determined by the quality of its education and the quality of education is determined by the quality of teachers. Teachers’ quality, however, can be regarded as one of the vital academic determinants that have profound relationship with students’ academic performance in all levels of educational system in Nigeria. It is against this background that the study investigated the teachers’ quality and secondary school students’ academic performance in Islamic studies in Ilorin, Nigeria. 60 secondary schools were selected across the five Local Government Areas forming Ilorin Emirate, Kwara state. In all, 300 students were selected using simple random technique. Purposive sampling technique was employed in selecting 300 Islamic studies teachers for the study. Questionnaire was used to elicit information on teachers’ quality from the respondents, while May/June West African Examination Council, 2013 Objective Test was adapted to test SSII students’ academic performance in Islamic studies and a profoma for SSI students’ academic performance in Islamic studies was collected. The findings of the study revealed no significant relationship between teachers’ teaching approach, subject mastery and secondary school students’ academic performance in Islamic studies in Ilorin Emirate. However, significant relationship was recorded between teachers’ educational qualification, years of teaching experience and academic performance of secondary school students in Islamic studies in Ilorin Emirate. Necessary recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.

POLICY-RELATED FACTORS AND TEACHERS' QUALIFICATIONS AS DETERMINANTS OF TEACHING OF ARABIC LANGUAGE
The study examined policy-related factors and teachers' qualifications as determinants teaching of the Arabic language in secondary schools in Kwara State. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of Kwara South was 23,458, and a sample of 379 students was collected using Kredjcie and Morgan's table. Multistage sampling procedures were adopted including purposive sampling to select three Local Government Areas (LGAs) and simple random sampling to select 30 public schools, 10 from each of the three LGAs. The researcher’s instrument, titled Adapted Policy Related Factors and Teachers' Qualifications as Determinants of Teaching Arabic Language Questionnaire (PRFTQTALQ) was used for data collection. The study found no significant difference in the perception of Arabic language teachers regarding policy-related factors and their qualifications as determinants of teaching Arabic in senior secondary schools in Kwara State. Therefore, the study concluded that there is no significant difference in teachers' perception of policy-related factors affecting the teaching of Arabic in senior secondary schools in Kwara State. The study found no significant difference in teachers' perceptions of Arabic teachers' qualifications determining their teaching of Arabic in senior secondary schools in Kwara State. It recommended amending the National Curriculum and Government policy to make Arabic a compulsory subject in Kwara State's senior secondary schools and awarding in-service training and scholarships for further studies to Arabic language teachers
Analysis of Techniques Employed in Teaching Arabic Components of Islamic Studies in Ilorin Junior Secondary Schools, Nigeria
الملخص: ركز هذا البحث على تحليل التقنيات التى يستخدمها المدرّسون فى تدريس مكونات اللغة العربية ضمن الدراسات الإسلامية في المدارس الإعدادية. وقد شمل البحث المحافظات الثلاثة التى تتكون منها مدينة إلورن. تكونت عينة البحث من 210 مدرسا تم اختيارهم من تسعين مدرسة من المدارس الإعدادية الحكومية والخاصة. تم استخدام الإحصاء الوصفي والإستدلالي (descriptive and inferential Statistics ) وتحليل التباين (ANOVA) لتحليل البيانات. وقد كشفت نتائج البحث أن التقنيات الشائعة المستخدمة في تدريس فنون العربية ضمن الدراسات الإسلامية هي تقتية المناقشة وذلك بمتوسط المدى (3.96) وتقنية الاستجواب بمتوسط (1.83). وكذلك أشارت نتائج البحث أن لخصائص جنس الفرد، والمؤهلات العلمية، وسنوات الخبرة في التدريس، ونوع الإدارة المدرسية أثر وطيد في اختيار التقنية المستخدمة في تدريس فنون العربية في الدراسات الإسلامية في المدارس الإعدادية. ومن النقاط المقترحة بحسب استنتاجات البحث هي: على مدرسي الدراسات الإسلامية أن يحاولوا استخدام التقنية الحديثة في تدريس فنون العربية ضمن الدراسات الإسلامية وأن يحاولوا زيادة معارفهم عن التقنية وذلك بواسطة التدريب أثناء الخدمة وتنفيذ البحوث العلمية. Abstract: This study aims to analyse the techniques utilised by junior secondary school teachers in teaching Arabic components of Islamic Studies. The research covers three Local Government Areas within Ilorin Metropolis, with a purposive sampling method involving 210 teachers from 90 public and private junior secondary schools. Relevant data were collected through questionnaire and analysed using descriptive, inferential statistics, and one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) as appropriate design and tools for this study. Objectives of the research include identifying common teaching techniques used in imparting Arabic components of Islamic Studies, differences in these techniques based on gender, qualification, teaching experience and school proprietorship. Findings indicated that discussion technique with a mean score of 3.96 along with standard deviation .45 and questioning technique with a mean score of 3.75 alongside standard deviation .78 are commonly employed in teaching Arabic components of Islamic Studies at junior secondary schools because their grand mean scores are close to 4 are considered are always used. The results also reveal that gender, qualification level, years of teaching experience as well as school proprietorship significantly influence the instructional methods used by teachers when delivering lessons on Arabic components of Islamic Studies. Based on these findings some recommendations made which include encouraging Islamic Studies instructors to adopt various modern teaching strategies while delivering lessons on Arabic components; furthermore, updating their knowledge base through attending various in-service trainings or carrying out further researches is highly advised for all interested parties in this field
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
