Towards quantitative 3D broadband ultrasound characterisation of breast lesions
This thesis describes the development and scientific validation of a real-time quantitative 3D flat-bed ultrasound scanner. Novel short-time Fourier transform software facilitated broadband ultrasound attenuation maps of a breast phantom, enabling detection and identification of both cystic and solid lesions
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Timing of Adverb Production in Italian Children’s Early Speech
This paper investigates the acquisition of Italian adverbs looking at children’s early spontaneous speech. The aims were twofold: (i) to determine the timing in which different adverbial items emerged in Italian children’s early speech; (ii) to reveal how the architecture of adverbial projections develops during acquisition. Two studies were carried out: Study 1 investigated the adverbs provided in the Italian version of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory (MB-CDI) and from Wordbank; Study 2 analyzed the spontaneous speech data of 17 Italian children collected through the CHILDES database, providing analyses by wMLU and considering the adverbs in Cinque (1999). Our results showed that children start producing temporal, place and quantity adverbs before 18 months, with a mean acquisition attested around 24 months, in line with other works (see Pačesová, 1968; Hanhong and Fang, 2011). In addition, we found that the adverbial hierarchy individuated in theoretical works (Cinque, 1999) is unraveled from the bottom to the top during acquisition, as expected under the Growing Trees Approach (Friedmann, Belletti and Rizzi, 2021)

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The Role of Agreement Morphology in the Licensing of the Italian Nominal Ellipsis: Insights from Acquisition Data
This paper investigates the spontaneous production of nominal (NP) ellipsis by typically developing Italian acquiring children with the aim to verify the role of morphological agreement as licensing factor of the Italian NP ellipsis. The present study adds to previous acquisition research verifying whether the DP-internal agreement is the relevant condition which legitimates the NP ellipsis in Italian, a language where the licensing conditions of the NP ellipsis has not been yet investigated. We asked two specific research questions: (Q1) What are the agreement patterns in the elliptical and
lexical DPs? (Q2) What is the timing of production of lexical and elliptical DPs? As for (Q1) the results of our study showed that the determiners and the adjectives of Italian remnants of NP ellipsis displayed target morphological agreement in gender and number with the elided NP from the beginning of children’s productions. These findings strongly indicate that the DP-internal agreement is not problematic to acquire by Italian children. As for (Q2), our results revealed that the first instance of NP ellipsis in Italian were found at 1;07 and that no child produced a remnant of NP ellipsis (with target DP-internal agreement) without having produced a lexical DP (with target DP-internal agreement). Since both lexical and elliptical DPs displayed correct DP-internal agreement from the beginning of Italian children’s productions, we conclude that it is not possible to
establish a cause-effect relationship between the two DPs and, consequently, to evaluate the role of morphological agreement as trigger to produce the NP ellipsis. Moreover, the peculiar order of production between lexical and elliptical DPs seems to demonstrate that there is syntactic structure in the ellipsis site, whereby the NP is syntactically projected in the DP and then deleted at PF, in line with the most recent analyses of NP ellipsis (Merchant 2001; Cinque 2012)
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
