    Water availability, use and challenges in Pakistan: Water sector challenges in the Indus Basin and impact of climate change

    This working paper takes stock of Pakistan's water resource availability, delineating water supply system and its sources including precipitation and river flows, and the impact of increasing climatic variability on the water supply system. In particular, the paper focuses on the current water usage and requirements in the agricultural sector, and how changing climatic conditions will affect the consumption patterns. With inflows expected to become more variable in the coming years, the severity of climatic extremities will become more pronounced, driving up water demands in addition to the demand increase from a rising population and urbanization. Over extraction of groundwater resources is also disturbing the water calculus and pushing the country towards a critical demand-supply gap.Non-PRIFPRI5DSG

    Gender Classification Using Smartphone Sensors and Machine Learning Approaches

    Gait analysis is typically associated with the pattern of the human walk. Determining it with computational means can be helpful in many ways-from identifying individual humans to detecting gait-related diseases. In comparison to the expensive approaches and devices, which are limited to laboratories, smart- phones with motion sensors are low-cost solutions through which we can analyze mobility and gait patterns. Thus, in this work, we present the usage of smartphone sensors for data acquisition followed by machine learning-based gender classification, which is a baseline for different gait-related tasks. In this regard, we collected data from 14 persons in different tracks, paces, and movement styles; after adequate normalization, iterative feature elimination, and Monte-Carlo experiment-based ML training, we found the Decision Tree is the most optimal algorithm with attaining 90.6 % balanced-accuracy

    PENGEMBANGAN DIKTAT MATA PELAJARAN MENGGUNAKAN ALAT UKUR DI SMK MUHAMMADIYAH PRAMBANAN SLEMAN ABSTRAK Oleh Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mendeskripsikan proses penyusunan diktat menggunakan alat ukur SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan Sleman, (2) mendeskripsikan kelayakan teoritis diktat menggunakan alat ukur SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan Sleman. Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian pengembangan (Research and Development) yang dilakukan melalui tahap pendahuluan, tahap pengembangan dan tahap akhir. Tahap pendahuluan yang dilakukan meliputi: (1) pengukuran kebutuhan, (2) perencanaan, (3) analisis karakteristik siswa, (4) analisis kurikulum, dan (5) memilih dan menetapkan materi pokok yang dikembangkan. Tahap pengembangan yang dilakukan adalah: (1) menyusun draft atau produk awal, (2) validasi ahli, (3) uji coba kelompok kecil. Tahap akhir yang dilakukan adalah ujicoba kelompok besar. Validasi ahli dilakukan kepada tiga dosen UNY dan dua guru SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan untuk mendapatkan masukan saran mengenai kelayakan media dari segi materi maupun media. Uji coba kelompok kecil dilakukan kepada 8 (delapan) siswa kelas X Teknik Pemesinan SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan yang dipilih dengan memperhatikan tingkat kemampuan siswa (siswa berkemampuan tinggi, sedang, dan rendah). Uji coba kelompok besar dilakukan kepada 25 siswa kelas X Teknik Pemesinan SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan untuk mengetahui kelayakan produk diktat yang dikembangkan. Teknik yang digunakan untuk menganalisis data adalah dengan teknik analisis deskriptif kuantitatif yang diungkapkan dalam distribusi skor dan kategori skala penilaian dengan acuan patokan (PAP). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, disimpulkan bahwa: (1) proses pengembangan diktat menggunakan alat ukur SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan Sleman, dilakukan melalui tahap pendahuluan, tahap pengembangan dan tahap akhir, (2) hasil pengembangan diktat menggunakan alat ukur berdasarkan ahli validasi menunjukkan skor rata-rata 4,1 dengan kategori baik, hasil uji coba kelompok kecil menunjukkan skor rata-rata 4,20 dengan kategori baik, dan hasil uji coba kelompok besar menunjukkan skor rata-rata 4,03 dengan kategori baik. Dengan demikian, produk diktat menggunakan alat ukur ini sudah layak untuk digunakan di SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan Sleman. Kata kunci : Diktat, menggunakan alat ukur, SMK.     Examining investors' sentiments, behavioral biases and investment decisions during COVID-19 in the emerging stock market: a case of Pakistan stock market

    Purpose: This study investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on investors' sentiments, behavioral biases and investment decisions in the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). Design/methodology/approach: The authors have assessed investors' behaviors and sentiments and the stock market overreaction during COVID-19 using a questionnaire and collected data from 401 investors trading in the PSX. Findings: Results of structural equation modeling revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic affected investors' behaviors, investment decisions and trade volume. It created feelings of fear and uncertainty among market participants. Evidence suggests that behavioral heuristics and biases, including representative heuristic, anchoring heuristic, overconfidence bias and disposition effect, negatively influenced investors' decisions at the PSX. Research limitations/implications: This study will contribute to behavioral finance literature in the context of developing countries as it has revealed the impact of COVID-19 on the emerging stock market, and its results are generalizable to other emerging stock markets. Practical implications: The findings of this study will help academicians, researchers and policymakers of developing countries. Academicians can formulate new behavioral models that can depict the solutions of dealing with an uncertain situation like COVID-19. Policymakers like the Securities Exchange Commission and the PSX can formulate crisis management strategies based on behavioral finance concepts to cope with situations like COVID-19 in the future and help lessen investors' losses in the stock markets. The role of the Securities Exchange Commission is crucial as it regulates the financial markets. It can arrange workshops to educate investors to manage their decisions during crisis time and focus on the best use of irrational and rational decision-making at the same time using Lo (2004) adaptive market hypothesis. Originality/value: The novelty of the paper is that the authors have introduced overconfidence and disposition effect as mediators that create a connection between representative and anchoring heuristics and investment decisions using primary data collected from investors (institutional and retail) to demonstrate the presence of psychological biases during COVID-19, and it has been done for the first time according to authors' knowledge. It is a contribution and addition to the behavioral finance literature in the context of developing countries' stock markets and their efficiency
