Island cruise tourism development: a resident’s perspective in the context of Italy

    No full text
Most studies that examine tourism impacts and community attitudes have been carried out from the perspective of the tourism sector as a whole, with very few papers focusing on specific types of tourism and/or analysing tourists' preferences for specific types of tourism segment. This paper discusses some pertinent issues in relation to cruise tourism development and community attitudes in a port of call cruise destination located in the island of Sicily (Southern Italy). Specifically, this study was carried out using a quota random sample of 1500 responses, which is representative of the population of Messina at 1% level. Findings show that residents express an overall positive attitude towards cruise tourism development even if it is not the most preferred when compared to other types of tourism (cultural tourism, sport tourism, and sun and sea tourism). Further, they highlight that significant differences based on socio-economic and demographic characteristics (age, gender, reliance on cruise-related employment, level of education, geographical proximity to tourist areas and port, length of residency and frequency of interaction with tourists) exist in residents' perceptions and attitudes towards cruise tourism development. Implications for policy-makers are discussed and suggestions for further research are given

Resident’s perceptions and attitudes toward the cruise tourism development: insights from an Italian tourism destination

Objectives – The impact of tourism has received much consideration by researchers attempting to investigate the attitudes of the host population toward tourism development. Research has focussed on rural, coastal and urban areas. However, very little research has been carried out in tourism island destinations. Furthermore, research aimed at analysing the perceptions and attitude of residents toward cruise tourism development is still very poor. Moving on from a literature review on community-based tourism, the aim of this study is to contribute towards filling this gap by examining residents’ attitudes toward cruise tourism in Messina, a port of call on the island of Sicily (Italy). Since current statistics in the field of community-based tourism report that residents’ attitudes are significantly influenced by several socio-economic and demographic characteristics, this study also examined whether these differences exist, within the topics considered in the present paper. Methods – This study uses a sample size of 1,500 residents. Data were collected via a stratified random sample with questionnaires administered face-to-face to residents living at different distances from the port and in different areas of the city. Results – Findings show that residents are expressing an overall positive attitude toward the cruise tourism development. Further, they highlight that significant differences based on socio-economic and demographic characteristics (age, gender, reliance on cruise-related employment , level of education, geographical proximity to tourist areas and port, length of residency and frequency of interaction with tourists) exist in residents’ perceptions and attitudes toward cruise tourism development. Conclusions – Perceptions of the local community and its attitude towards the impact of any proposed tourism development model should be taken into account when planning the future of a cruise tourism destination. Local government and policy makers should run internal marketing and communication activities aimed at increasing the favourableness of residents’ attitudes toward tourism, delivering tailored messages which demonstrate the positive balance between the positive and negative impacts of tourism

Service Dominant Logic, Open Innovation Intermediaries and Innovative Capacities: Towards a Theoretical Framework

    No full text
This work stresses the centrality of the Service-Dominant Logic (S-D logic) point of view and the relationships between firm and Open Innovation Intermediary in the knowledge development process providing a conceptual framework. From an indepth literature review on S-D logic, Open Innovation Intermediaries and firm dynamic capabilities, a development of a conceptual framweork based on these research areas is provided. The framework is intended to highlight the role of customers (firms) into professional relationships with intermediaries of innovation becomes progressively significant in the innovation activities because these professional relationships increasingly become co-creators of value. Within their advanced platforms, intermediaries or brokers, encourage, promote and sustain interactions and partnerships aligned to value co-creation enterprises. This is achieved by providing a heterogeneous set of services to augment dynamic cooperation, to advance concepts or solutions for solving interdisciplinary problems and, consequently, to address an organisation’s requirements for new market opportunities. Therefore, these partnerships represent a possible way to define and to improve the value cocreation actions by firms that intend to engage and to cooperate with adjunctive and integrative resources and expertise. In addition, the framework has been designed to highlight a particular domain centred on the the role of each S-D Logic axioms within the innovation capabilities; and the relationship and orientation between organisation and innovation intermediary. The main findings highlight that both firms and Open Innovation Intermediaries need to develop innovative capabilities through direct and indirect relationships within the S-D logic perspective. This study is an effort towards building a conceptual framework by connecting the concepts of Open Innovation Intermediaries, dynamic capabilities and S-D logic

Sustainability and authenticity: are they food risk relievers during the COVID-19 pandemic?

    No full text
Purpose: The study jointly investigates sustainability and authenticity concepts in the food context during the COVID-19 outbreak with a fourfold objective: (1) understanding whether sustainability and authenticity are equivalent concepts in consumers' perceptions; (2) advancing knowledge on the role played by them about food frauds' perception; (3) investigating whether these concepts are considered as “risk relievers” by consumers, (4) comparing the concepts to understand which one has a greater weight on the consumer's perception. Design/methodology/approach: The study adopts a Combination of a Uniform and a shifted Binomial distribution (CUB models) on data gathered in Spain between June and August 2020 through an online questionnaire. Findings: The findings reveal that: (1) consumers perceive sustainability and authenticity as different concepts in the food context and (2) as two important indicators of fraud protection of a product for consumers; (3) besides, authenticity is seen as a “risk reliever” in buying a food product, as well as sustainability, (4) although results underline high uncertainty in the latter case. Originality/value: By considering that the COVID-19 outbreak seriously threatens food safety, security and nutrition, this research elucidates the relevant role of food sustainability and authenticity concepts as “risk relievers” in terms of food frauds and negative issues related to COVID-19

Understanding Roles and Functions of Academic Libraries as Innovation Intermediaries within the Service-Dominant Logic Perspective: An Australian Case Study

    No full text
This study defines the academic library as an innovation intermediary that under the service-dominant logic perspective has a role of co-creator of value instead of a traditional service provider focused on collecting and exchanging knowledge. Innovation intermediaries develop a number of roles and functions to stimulate knowledge creation and transfer by supporting interactions and collaborations among multiple parties. As result, 2x2 Matrix was created to position each library’s service based on its unique combination of necessary innovation roles and functions. A single case study focused on a university library and highlighted the exist-ence of two different types of intermediaries: generalist and specialist

The Cittaslow Movement: Opportunities and Challenges for the Governance of Tourism Destinations

    No full text
This Research Note analyses the contribution of Cittaslow (slow city) to the governance of tourism destinations by promoting the “slowness” perspective and the concept of sustainable development at the local level. This movement strongly encourages policy-makers to orient its various efforts essentially to define and implement policies, activities and initiatives for sustaining economic development, social well-being and environmental sustainability. In this way, it stimulates the improvement of quality of life for inhabitants and tourists of the involved destinations. Based on a qualitative analysis focused on “Cittaslow Association”, this study concentrates on opportunities and challenges for certified destinations as well as the linkages between practices defined by the Cittaslow Association and sustainable development. From a theoretical point of view, the Research Note contributes to destination development literature, offering significant highlights on the governance of tourism destinations. From a managerial point of view, it supports policy-makers underlining the main opportunities and challenges for a tourism destination in being certified as Cittaslow

Blockchain and art market: resistance or adoption?

    No full text
Blockchain technology is currently stimulating a broader process of social and industrial transformation impacting several potential areas of adoption (e.g. transactions, tracking and tracing solutions, authenticity, etc ...). The acceptance of this technology represents a major challenge for the art ecosystem. The literature around relations and applications of blockchain in the art market is fragmented and fails to provide an understanding of the current/potential opportunities of this application. This paper explores how blockchain is being adopted in the art sector. By using a perspective of mobilizing organizational and institutional field theory, this study performs an explorative qualitative analysis based on semi-structured interviews with 15 experts from the art market. The findings underline the complexity of effective implementation of this technology, the contradictory positions regarding the benefits and business opportunities it offers, as well as the market players’ resistance to change and trust. The theoretical and practical implications are also discusse

L’evoluzione dei servizi all’innovazione: il ruolo dell’intermediario in una prospettiva knowledge-based

    No full text

This paper examines the services provided by Open Innovation Intermediaries (OIIs) through their web-based platforms, in order to understand how OIIs can effectively support innovation seekers in their innovation processes. Relying on the existing literature exploring the roles and functions of web-based OII platforms, we carried out an exploratory and comparative qualitative study to identify the services available, to classify them by the various phases of the innovation processes in which they can be beneficial, and to link them to general roles and functions. Our analysis of the services provided by OII platforms sheds light on the dynamics of innovation seekers’ choices, and gives meaningful insights that can help improve this information and these services, so that OIIs can improve their offer in terms of complementary resources and knowledge for the innovation processes
