    The ATIS sign language corpus

    Systems that automatically process sign language rely on appropriate data. We therefore present the ATIS sign language corpus that is based on the domain of air travel information. It is available for five languages, English, German, Irish sign language, German sign language and South African sign language. The corpus can be used for different tasks like automatic statistical translation and automatic sign language recognition and it allows the specific modelling of spatial references in signing space

    Nel caso di condizioni ricorrenti di un sistema di traffico, è interessante analizzare quali siano le possibilità di un sistema ATIS di indirizzare il sistema verso uno stato di funzionamento stazionario eventualmente diverso da quello verso cui il sistema evolverebbe naturalmente. In tale contesto vanno innanzitutto specificati quali sono i possibili regimi di funzionamento stazionario e va analizzato il ruolo degli ATIS in base alla loro capacità di indurre, attraverso informazioni esogene, un stato di equilibrio diverso da quello naturale, ma preferibile dal punto di vista del funzionamento complessivo del sistema. Un tale tipo di analisi, per la quale occorre dotarsi di opportuni modelli di simulazione del traffico in presenza di informazione, di stima della compliance e di progettazione dell’informazione e misura dell’accuratezza, vede lo specializzarsi della formalizzazione matematica al caso di di regime e permette la analisi sulle possibilità di utilizzare i sistemi ATIS per indurre funzionamenti stazionari di ottimo di sistema. La specializzazione a condizioni di processo dinamico, invece, permette la valutazione degli ATIS in termini di stabilizzazione attorno ad un attrattore del processo stesso delle condizioni di equilibrio ritenute ammissibili

    In recent years the interest toward ATIS (Advanced Traveller Information Systems) is constantly increasing, probably because of the intent of solving over-congestion with minimal expenditure. Great efforts have been devoted to enabling technologies and not negligible ones in studying aspects related to modelling; however, a unified theory does not yet exist, as well as a general agreement on the objectives that can be achieved. It is not widely recognised what can be expected from ATIS, how the information must be designed and how to assess/forecast the effects at a network level. Here the authors will present a theoretical framework, as well as some practical analyses, aimed to deal with some aspects related to the additional uncertainties introduced in the route choice problem by the presence of ATI

    As part of a continuing research on Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS), this report presents an institutional analysis of alternative approaches to sustaining publicly supported ATIS. The fifteen largest metropolitan regions in the US and the private sector efforts were investigated through a literature review and in-person and telephone interviews. The study goals were to investigate alternative revenue approaches to achieve a self sustaining ATIS, identify institutional barriers to achieving self-sustainability, and develop a framework of assumptions. Two public sector approaches are; publicly centered with ATIS principally serving public transportation management goals and ATIS market growth with an emphasis on building a self-sustaining ATIS based on products that will sell, using existing, tested technology. The private sector initiatives are dependent on commercialization: investments to set up regional ATIS functions and investment on a national infrastructure. Institutional barriers impeding sustainability include: need for continuity of leadership, inter-jurisdictirional disputes, retaining technical expertise, maintaining public-private partnerships, and deploying interoperability standards.     ATIS (Advanced Traveller Information Systems) are aimed to dispatch information on traffic conditions to travellers allowing them to keep their travel decisions with less uncertainty. Effects of ATIS can be analysed at a disaggregated level or at a network level. In the first case the impacts of ATIS on individual decisions are considered, in the second case it is considered how travellers’ decisions interact each other and with the congestion phenomenon, leading to actual traffic patterns. The investigation of the effects of information on travellers’ behaviours/choices at a disaggregated/individual level is the focus of this work, provided that it is a pre-requisite for any analysis of the impacts on traffic networks. One of the crucial points in ATIS is that travellers’ behaviour is expected to be influenced by the ability of the system in making accurate estimations of actual travel times. In particular, this work investigates the effect of the information accuracy on travellers’ compliance and proposes an original modelling framework able to explicitly estimate it. The study is carried out by means of an experimental environment based on a Stated Preference survey. The obtained results are very encouraging and allow for a deeper comprehension and simulation of travellers’ compliance with ATIS. I sistemi ATIS (Advanced Traveller Information Systems) hanno come principale obiettivo quello di informare i viaggiatori sulle condizioni di traffico affinché essi possano effettuare le proprie scelte di viaggio con maggiore consapevolezza. Gli effetti degli ATIS possono essere analizzati a due diversi livelli: un livello disaggregato, al quale si osserva l’effetto che l’informazione ha sulle scelte di un dato viaggiatore, e ad un livello di rete, al quale si osserva l’effetto dell’interazione fra le scelte dei singoli utenti e fra queste ed il fenomeno della congestione. Questo studio si pone al livello di analisi disaggregato, premessa per qualsiasi operazione di valutazione dei sistemi ATSI a livello di rete. In particolare, l’obiettivo del lavoro è di effettuare un’analisi dell’effetto dell’accuratezza di un sistema ATIS sull’adeguamento delle scelte dei viaggiatori all’informazione ricevuta (compliance). In tale ambito, lo studio è stato effettuato a partire da una serie di dati raccolti mediante una indagine del tipo Preferenze Dichiarate (Stated Preferences- SP). I risultati ottenuti sono particolarmente significativi ed hanno permesso la specificazione e calibrazione di un modello in grado di simulare in maniera esplicita l’effetto delle caratteristiche dei servizi ATIS sulla compliance dei viaggiatori. I risultati aprono il campo all’utilizzo, all’interno di strumenti di assegnazione per contesti ATIS, della variabile di compliance non più in forma parametrica, come ad oggi generalmente fatto, ma in forma di variabile endogena
