No full text
This thesis aims to analyse the impacts of the entry of the direct foreign investment of Futaba Czech s. r. o. on Havlíčkův Brod region. The introductory part contains a list of the sources reporting on the company{\crq}s investment decisions. Various aspects concerning the localization factors are included as well. Next part focuses on examining Futaba Czech s. r. o. in particular but also partly on Sklo Bohemi, a. s. and Pleas, a. s. They represent the three largest companies in Havlíčkův Brod region. The main aim of the author of the work was to find out how these three companies influence each other, even though each of them is interested in a different branch of industry. The following hypotheses are examined in the thesis: 1) Funding of FCZ by short-term credits indicates an existence of the significant insecurity, which can cause some doubts about company{\crq}s ability to continue to work according to principle based on continuation unlimited by time. 2) Benefit of the direct foreign investment of Futaba for the region is substantial at the present time and the impacts on the social environment are considerable as well. 3) Termination of operations of the company Sklo Bohemia, a. s. has influenced the social conditions of Havlíčkův Brod region significantly and it has had an influence on the operation of the companies Futaba Czech s. r. o. and Pleas, a. s. All three hypotheses have been verified in the thesis. The last part of the work gives the report of the evaluation of the hypotheses in question and a supposition, that the examined company might leave Czech market, because the results of its management are getting worse, is expressed

Nagasaki University (長崎大学)博士(医学)Temporal variation and fluctuation in environmental contamination in Futaba town and Okuma town, the location of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), were evaluated based on a car-borne survey conducted from October 2021 to November 2022. Although the environmental radioactivity in the interim storage facility area (ISF) was higher than that in open areas (i.e., the evacuation order lifted areas in Futaba town and the Specific Reconstruction and Regeneration Base area [SRRB] in Okuma town), only minor temporal changes were seen in the ambient dose and detection rate of radiocesium (the proportion of radiocesium detected points per all measuring points) in those areas, respectively. These findings suggest that the observed variations may result from physical decay and environmental remediation. Resuspension caused by human activities and weather could also affect the detection rate of radiocesium. The annual external effective doses in Futaba town and Okuma town were estimated to be at a limited level (< 1 mSv/year). Nevertheless, to help ensure the safety and future prosperity of residents and communities in the affected areas around the FDNPP, long-term follow-up monitoring of temporal exposure dose levels during the recovery and reconstruction phases is extremely important.

Functional Structure Analysis and Arrangement of Official Documents of Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko

No full text
This paper aims to focus on the official documents of Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko retained at Geidai Archive Center of Modern Art, to analyze the functional structure of Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko as the provenance of these documents, and to arrange the official documents. Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko, established in 1887, was a key institution in Japanese art academism and its official documents have historical value for modern Japanese art history. These documents also link to the activities of the current Tokyo University of the Arts and are vital for the university's accountability. To utilize these documents as active resources, I aimed to create an accessible archive arrangement for users by employing a series-based arrangement method that considers the organizational changes over time. In this paper, I first examined the organizational history of Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko to understand the functions of this organization. Next, after arranging the official documents according to the principles of archives, I created an arrangement model that focuses on functionality. From the above, it was possible to position the official documents of Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko within the continuity from past to present. Furthermore, it was possible to highlight the unique functions of the organization.departmental bulletin pape

Morphological differences in skulls and feeding apparatuses between Antarctic and common minke whales, and the implication for their feeding ecology

No full text
The differences in rorqual feeding ecology have been linked to the presence of different morphological markers. The Antarctic minke whale (Balaenoptera bonaerensis Burmeister, 1867) and common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata Lacpde, 1804) are closely related species, but their morphological differences have not been fully investigated. In this study, we compared 21 skull and 11 feeding apparatuses (baleen and mouth-related parts) measurement points between these two species using hundreds of individuals covering a wide range of body lengths in both sexes. Their engulfment capacities were estimated using these measurements. Our results show that Antarctic minke whales have (1) proportionally larger skulls to the body length, (2) more dorsoventrally and laterally curved rostra, (3) proportionally larger feeding apparatuses to the condylobasal length, and (4) significantly larger engulfment capacity than common minke whales. These differences could indicate that Antarctic minke whales have developed a feeding strategy suitable for feeding on krill, which forms large schools. In contrast, common minke whales have adapted to prey on small pelagic fishes that are agile and form small schools. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. I remember teaching at Seabrook School

No full text
In this "I remember" memoir, Olive Dougherty, a second-grade teacher from Seabrook School, recalls her past students. She enjoyed teaching at Seabrook because of her exposure to diverse cultures and backgrounds. Seabrook teachers were encouraged to visit students and their families in their homes, as well as to invite students to their houses. This community closeness helped alleviate the fears of students who initially felt lost and isolated in their new, unfamiliar homes. Ms. Dougherty has stayed in contact with many of her former students, some of whom have become teachers themselves. The Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center has been soliciting current and past residents of Seabrook Farms for an "I remember" project. Residents are asked to create narratives regarding their experiences at Seabrook Farms. These memories help preserve the history and multi-cultural heritage of Seabrook Farms

Elective surgery system strengthening: development, measurement, and validation of the surgical preparedness index across 1632 hospitals in 119 countries

No full text
Background The 2015 lancet Commission on global surgery identified surgery and anaesthesia as indispensable parts of holistic health-care systems. However, COVID-19 exposed the fragility of planned surgical services around the world, which have also been neglected in pandemic recovery planning. This study aimed to develop and validate a novel index to support local elective surgical system strengthening and address growing backlogs. Methods First, we performed an international consultation through a four-stage consensus process to develop a multidomain index for hospital-level assessment (surgical preparedness index; SPI). Second, we measured surgical preparedness across a global network of hospitals in high-income countries (HICs), middle-income countries (MICs), and low-income countries (LICs) to explore the distribution of the SPI at national, subnational, and hospital levels. Finally, using COVID-19 as an example of an external system shock, we compared hospitals' SPI to their planned surgical volume ratio (SVR; ie, operations for which the decision for surgery was made before hospital admission), calculated as the ratio of the observed surgical volume over a 1-month assessment period between June 6 and Aug 5,2021, against the expected surgical volume based on hospital administrative data from the same period in 2019 (ie, a pre-pandemic baseline). A linear mixed-effects regression model was used to determine the effect of increasing SPI score.Findings In the first phase, from a longlist of 103 candidate indicators, 23 were prioritised as core indicators of elective surgical system preparedness by 69 dinicians (23133%) women; 46 [67%] men; 41 from HICs, 22 from MICs, and six from LICs) from 32 countries. The multidomain SPI included 11 indicators on facilities and consumables, two on staffing, two on prioritisation, and eight on systems. Hospitals were scored from 23 (least prepared) to 115 points (most prepared). In the second phase, surgical preparedness was measured in 1632 hospitals by 4714 clinicians from 119 countries. 745 (45.6%) of 1632 hospitals were in MICs or LICs. The mean SPI score was 84.5 (95% CI 84.1-84.9), which varied between HIC (88.5 189.0-88.0]), MIC (81.8 [82.5-81.1]), and LIC (66.8 [64.9-68.7]) settings. In the third phase, 1217 (74.6%) hospitals did not maintain their expected SVR during the COVID-19 pandemic, of which 625 (51.4%) were from HIC, 538 (44.2%) from MIC, and 54 (4.4%) from LIC settings. In the mixed-effects model, a 10-point increase in SPI corresponded to a 3.6% (95% CI 3.0-4.1; p<0.0001) increase in SVR. This was consistent in HIC (4.8% [4.1-5.5]; p<0.0001), MIC (2.8 [2.0-3.7]; p<0.0001), and LIC (3.8 [1.3-6 . 7%]; p<0.0001) settings.Interpretation The SPI contains 23 indicators that are globally applicable, relevant across different system stressors, vary at a subnational level, and are collectable by front-line teams. In the case study of COVID-19, a higher SPI was associated with an increased planned surgical volume ratio independent of country income status, COVID-19 burden, and hospital type. Hospitals should perform annual self-assessment of their surgical preparedness to identify areas that can be improved, create resilience in local surgical systems, and upscale capacity to address elective surgery backlogs.
