Pensare per Sistemi: la chiave delle moderne organizzazioni intelligenti
Peter Senge1 (Stanford, California, 1947) è uno dei teorici della cosiddetta Learning Organization, cioè l’organizzazione in grado di apprendere. Laureatosi alla Stanford University in ingegneria aerospaziale, negli anni successivi diventò direttore del Center for Organizational Learning alla MIT Sloan School of Management ed è il fondatore della Society for Organizational Learning (SoL).
Come avrete in qualche modo compreso dalla lettura di questo volume, secondo Senge la caratteristica fondamentale delle Learning Organizations è che esse apprendono attraverso l’azione e l’esperienza dei suoi membri. Le organizzazioni che apprendono sono dunque quelle che hanno acquisito la consapevolezza del legame tra miglioramento, cambiamento e apprendimento, e le persone che ne fanno parte cercano di incrementare di continuo la loro capacità di conseguire i risultati cui aspirano. Tale tendenza verso l’apprendimento (che va inseguito e sviluppato lungo l’intero arco della vita) avviene sulla base dell’esercizio delle cinque discipline descritte in questo libro, e sono proprio tali discipline (di cui la quinta è proprio il Systems Thinkng – o Pensiero Sistemico – che integra le altre quattro) che permettono alle persone di apprendere quando sono inserite in un contesto organizzativo che in qualche modo anch’esso “risuona” con tale capacità di migliorarsi e cambiare, imparando.
A più di 20 anni dalla prima proposizione2 in Italia di questo brillante ed illuminante volume, l’uscita di questo libro segue di poco l’uscita nel panorama italiano di un altro masterpiece del pensiero sistemico, Pensare per Sistemi3, di Donella Meadows4, con cui Senge ebbe modo di confrontarsi a lungo e lavorare insieme negli anni trascorsi al MIT ed anche successivamente. Ecco dunque che la riproposizione di questo volume, insieme al libro della Meadows, tradotto per l’Italia dal SYDIC, il System Dynamics Italian Chapter5 di cui ho l’onore di essere il Presidente, acquisisce oggi una fondamentale importanza nella costruzione di una letteratura di base sistemica in lingua italiana che sia al tempo stesso di supporto alla divulgazione del Systems Thinking e di illuminazione e base culturale comune per accademici, professionisti e aziende che intendono sposare questa metodologia di analisi e comprensione dei sistemi, che poi diviene inevitabilmente anche una importante filosofia nella vita di tutti i giorni.
Proprio in continuità con Pensare per Sistemi, il SYDIC ha supportato con entusiasmo questa operazione editoriale sin dai primi passi e fino all’inclusione in questa nuova edizione di due capitoli inediti, il Capitolo 1 (del prof. Edoardo Mollona, Ordinario in Economia Aziendale e socio fondatore del SYDIC), che ha introdotto il lettore ad alcuni concetti preliminari e fondamentali de La Quinta Disciplina ad inizio volume e prima dell’inizio del testo stesso di Peter Senge, e di questo Capitolo conclusivo, a cura del sottoscritto (research fellow in modellazione e simulazione presso la Link Campus University e Presidente del Chapter Italiano della System Dynamics Society), che intende tirare invece le fila del discorso “Sengiano” e rilanciare una visione innovativa sulle organizzazioni moderne attraverso un concetto che evolve dalla Learning Organization e si proietta verso il futuro con la proposizione dell’idea di “Smart Model-based Governance”, un nuovo framework per le Organizzazioni Intelligenti, che in questo capitolo viene raffinata rispetto alle prime proposizioni (Armenia et al., 2017).
Come si potrà dunque leggere nel prosieguo di questo capitolo, cercherò di guidare il lettore nella comprensione del concetto di “governance basata su modelli e dati” mostrando come gli elementi più tecnologici del moderno decision-making possano sfruttare appieno il paradigma concettuale offerto dal Systems Thinking e sposarsi perfettamente (senza dunque andarvi in contrasto) con gli elementi modellistici che emergono dalla transizione dalla Learning Organization alla Intelligent Organization

Farmer Education Enables Precision Farming of Dairy Operations.
Precision dairy farming is the application of information technologies to dairy cattle farm management and allows increase both the performances and the profit of the farm production processes pursuing objectives of low-input, high-efficiency and sustainability. Recent studies clearly showed that the critical point of adoption rate of precision farming technology in dairy farms is represented by farmer education level. This paper describes the role of farmer education and its constraints on driving the efficacy of precision farming techniques adopted by a certain dairy farm. The paper also describes a possible application to a specific dairy cattle production area of Italy. The conceptual map consisted of 6 causal- loop named: Precision farming; Reports; Break even; Efficiency target; Farmer background; Education demand. The proposed conceptual model showed as farmer education enables and stimulates the efficacy of precision farming technologies. Further developments must include the stock and flow diagram of the reviewed relationships and the model calibration with existing information on dairy practices and required local information on farmer capabilities
Improving management effectiveness and overall performance of software development projects through a system dynamics approach
While existing research has mainly focused on project management’s static view, our work investigates the impacts
of projects’ structure and behavioural dynamics on their performance, with a specific focus on the influence of some
peculiar development processes. A dynamic simulation model of a single phase project was built using the system
dynamics methodology. The model integrates several previously developed and tested project structures and adds a
separate structure for the negotiation process. Simulations describe the behaviours generated by the interaction of
customized development processes in single-phase projects. Project performances are measured in terms of time,
quality and cost. Our research aims to show that development processes, as well as shared resource levelling
techniques, significantly impact the dynamic behaviour of projects through the feedback, delays and nonlinear
relationships which are usually omitted in traditional project management practice, as well as in methods, tools and
models, but are very important descriptors of project complexity. Expanding the models used to manage projects to
include dynamic features requires a change of focus by researchers and practitioners. The system dynamics
methodology provides some of the tools for developing and implementing such an expansion in project models

Managerialization, professionalization and firm performance in family business: A Systems Thinking perspective
This paper proposes a systemic model on the intertwined relations among
managerialization, professionalization and firm economic performance, considering
both business- and family-specific features and issues. It sheds light
on the role that, in the family business, the firm economic performance may
play in favouring a positive development of both the business and the family
itself. It aims at understanding how, in family businesses, the firm managerialization
and professionalization may represent relevant drivers of firm performance.
A Systems Thinking model based on causal loop diagrams was
developed, to provide a clear framing of the interrelationships among the various
aspects at stake. The conceptual model combines with systemic perspective
all the variables and relationships that come into play when considering jointly

A new system dynamics model to improve internal and external efficiency in the paper digitization of Italian Public Administrations
In this paper, we developed a new System Dynamics model in order to identify the benefits arising from the digitization process in the Italian Public Administration. Our study initially describes the problem in terms of its underlying structural relationships among the variables that constitute the system. A systemic approach allows to consider many crucial aspects of the problem and provides a rich analysis that shows how issues brought by social and psychological factors may become a great obstacle to organizational change.
In particular, the analysis has been focused on the interaction between the “world of citizens” and the “world of the administrations”, in a domain of the 8101 Italian municipalities . By means of the System Dynamics approach, it has been possible to study the structure of the system both from a qualitative and quantitative point of view. The study has allowed to identify public management policies and management leverages that constitute the main variables on which the Italian Public Administration would have to act in order to improve its internal and external efficiency and in order to confer an added value to the services being offere
Simulating Board of Directors decisional dynamics: A System Dynamics application for Upper Echelons Theory
This work deals with the development of a business game, named Board
Leadership Game (BLG), which is still under further development at the
University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. The final goal is to build a powerful didactic tool for students and management professionals in order to favor the understanding of underlying dynamics in the decisions’ formulation processes inside groups; this also takes into account principles that come from the Upper Echelons Theory, developed in management science, which establishes a direct relationship between top management’s demographic characteristics and the strategies carried out by the firm. In the developed framework, each player plays the company CEO, making up strategic proposals that are examined by the company’s Board of Directors (BoD) and could be eventually changed in accordance with the top management
demographic characteristics and with CEO’s leadership (the ability to influence the BoD’s final decisions). Strategies chosen by the BoD, together with market’s characteristics and competitors’ actions, determine the company’s economic and financial results, which in turn close the loop by having a direct influence on CEO’s leadershi
A System Dynamics simulation model for sustainable value through the Viable Systems Approach
Purpose – Aim of this work is to shed light on sustainable value and develop a model, based on vSa
and translated at applicative level through the system dynamics methodology, and through which it
will be possible, once contextualized, to simulate the behaviours of business organizations interested
in measuring sustainable value. According to the above-mentioned theoretical framework, value,
traditionally considered as something objective and defined a priori, owns a multiple nature and is
characterized by strongly subjective contents. This last concept means that the definition of value
passes through the perspective of the subjects towards whom it is created (Recipient), in relation to
the perspective of the entity who is interested in its creation and measurement (the governing body
of the organizations). This conceptualization, based on vSa, assumes greater significance when we
refer to sustainable value, which is the result of the concurrent consideration of three dimensions:
economic, social and environmental. By adopting this perspective, value will be considered as a
vector quantity and as the result of the subjective weighting of the different stakeholders that may
change according to the considered organization.
Design/Methodology/approach – The paper will start from the analysis of the existing relations
between the two considered approaches: system dynamics and vSa. Then, we will implement the
theoretical framework in a simulation model trough system dynamics, which is capable to address
systemic problems and is an expressive approach to solve issues rising in complex social, managerial,
economic, or ecological systems: any dynamic systems characterized by interdependence, mutual
interaction, information feedback, and circular causality. In order to translate theory into “action and
application” we will develop a model through which it will be possible to exploit the advantages of
vSa implemented into a simulation model.
Findings – The integration of the subjective perspective within a model for calculating sustainable
value will consider vSa as the theoretical framework of reference and System Dynamics as the
methodology that allows translating such approach into a simulation model.
Originality/value – The reasons that have inspired this work derive from the consideration that,
currently, there isn’t a theoretical/practical approach to sustainable value measurement for business
organizations that simultaneously considers the dimensions of the triple bottom line together with the
subjective perspective of decision makers. From these considerations, derives the idea to integrate
vSa and System Dynamics in analyzing the issue of sustainable value, whose triple dimension is
usually (erroneously) seen in an optic that does not consider the interactions among those very same
three dimensions
