    In this note we present some results on the Calkin-Wilf tree of irreducible fractions, giving an insight on the duality relating it to the Stern-Brocot tree, and proving noncommutative versions of known results relating labels of the Calkin-Wilf trees to hyperbinary expansions of positive integers.     A new characteristic property of rich words

    Originally introduced and studied by the third and fourth authors together with J. Justin and S. Widmer (2008), rich words constitute a new class of finite and infinite words characterized by containing the maximal number of distinct palindromes. Several characterizations of rich words have already been established. A particularly nice characteristic property is that all 'complete returns' to palindromes are palindromes. In this note, we prove that rich words are also characterized by the property that each factor is uniquely determined by its longest palindromic prefix and its longest palindromic suffix

    Rich, Sturmian, and trapezoidal words

    In this paper we explore various interconnections between rich words, Sturmian words, and trapezoidal words. Rich words, first introduced by the second and third authors together with J. Justin and S. Widmer, constitute a new class of finite and infinite words characterized by having the maximal number of palindromic factors. Every finite Sturmian word is rich, but not conversely. Trapezoidal words were first introduced by the first author in studying the behavior of the subword complexity of finite Sturmian words. Unfortunately this property does not characterize finite Sturmian words. In this note we show that the only trapezoidal palindromes are Sturmian. More generally we show that Sturmian palindromes can be characterized either in terms of their subword complexity (the trapezoidal property) or in terms of their palindromic complexity. We also obtain a similar characterization of rich palindromes in terms of a relation between palindromic complexity and subword complexity

    An assessment of the impact of possible CAP reform scenarios on Romanian agriculture

    Using a simplified model, with key-variable the prices of two different possible scenarios of CAP reform after 2013 (moderate and radical), this paper present a comparison between the price effects of implementation of each reform scenario at 2015 horizon on Romanian agriculture. This short analysis shows that, under the presented hypotheses, the net welfare effect, due to the price changes, for the selected products, is positive in both reform scenarios, yet greater in the case of the radical reform. Integrated in the large context of Romanian development, it seems that the influence of CAP reform upon agriculture and rural areas will be most likely a gradual one: an interpenetration between the two scenarios is foreseeable, starting with the moderate reform that will dominate the period around 2013, the reform measures acquiring a more radical character afterwards.CAP reform, Romania, welfare effects, Agricultural and Food Policy,

    Avaliação dos efeitos centrais do extrato aquoso (EA) de Stachytarpheta cayennensis Vahl

    Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciências BiológicasNo presente estudo, investigamos as ações do EA de S. cayennensis no sistema nervoso central (SNC) de camundongos, procurando avaliar uma possível atividade que pudesse contribuir para as ações farmacológicas descritas na literatura. Camundongos Swiss fêmeas foram tratados com EA de S. cayennensis (0,25; 0,5 e 1 g/kg) ou água (controle) por via intragástrica e, após 3 h, foram submetidos a diferentes testes comportamentais: labirinto em cruz elevado, nado forçado, comportamento estereotipado, convulsões induzidas por pentilenotetrazol e eletrochoque transcorneal máximo, sono barbitúrico e etéreo, temperatura retal, movimentação e rota-rod. Nossos resultados mostraram que o tratamento oral agudo com o EA de S. cayennensis somente potenciou o sono barbitúrico, evidenciando a falta de atividade central do extrato em estudo. Investigou-se então a hipótese do EA interferir em vias metabolizadoras hepáticas do pentobarbital. O aumento dos níveis plasmáticos de pentobarbital após o tratamento com o EA indicou um efeito inibidor do sistema enzimático hepático responsável pela metabolização do pentobarbital, sem qualquer sinal de hepatotoxicidade. Assim, a potenciação do sono produzida pelo EA deveu-se simplesmente a um efeito farmacocinético e não a uma atividade no SN

    On the number of episturmian palindromes

    Episturmian words are a suitable generalization to arbitrary alphabets of Sturmian words. In this paper we are interested in the problem of enumerating the palindromes in all episturmian words over a kk-letter alphabet AkA_k. We give a formula for the map gkg_k giving for any nn the number of all palindromes of length nn in all episturmian words over AkA_k. This formula extends to k>2k>2 a similar result obtained for k=2k=2 by the second and third author in 2006. The map gkg_k is expressed in terms of the map PkP_k counting for each nn the palindromic prefixes of all standard episturmian words (epicentral words). For any n0n\geq 0, P2(n)=ϕ(n+2)P_2(n)= \phi(n+2) where ϕ\phi is the totient Euler function. The map PkP_k plays an essential role also in the enumeration formula for the map λk\lambda_k counting for each nn the finite episturmian words over AkA_k. Similarly to Euler's function, the behavior of PkP_k is quite irregular. The first values of PkP_k and of the related maps gkg_k, and λk\lambda_k for 3k63\leq k\leq 6 have been calculated and reported in the Appendix. Some properties of PkP_k are shown. In particular, broad upper and lower bounds for PkP_k, as well as for m=0nPk(m)\sum_{m=0}^n P_k(m) and gkg_k, are determined. Finally, some conjectures concerning the map PkP_k are formulated

    A generalized palindromization map in free monoids

    The palindromization map ψ in a free monoid A* was introduced in 1997 by the first author in the case of a binary alphabet A, and later extended by other authors to arbitrary alphabets. Acting on infinite words, ψ generates the class of standard episturmian words, including standard Arnoux-Rauzy words. In this paper, we generalize the palindromization map, starting with a given code X over A. The new map ψX maps X* to the set PAL of palindromes of A*. In this way, some properties of ψ are lost and some are saved in a weak form. When X has a finite deciphering delay, one can extend ψX to Xω, generating a class of infinite words much wider than standard episturmian words. For a finite and maximal code X over A, we give a suitable generalization of standard Arnoux-Rauzy words, called X-AR words. We prove that any X-AR word is a morphic image of a standard Arnoux-Rauzy word and we determine some suitable linear lower and upper bounds to its factor complexity. For any code X, we say that ψX is conservative when ψX( X*)⊆ X*. We study conservative maps ψX and conditions on X assuring that ψX is conservative. We also investigate the special case of morphic-conservative maps ψX, i.e., maps such that φ°ψ= ψX°φ for an injective morphism φ. Finally, we generalize ψX by replacing palindromic closure with θ-palindromic closure, where θ is any involutory antimorphism of A*. This yields an extension of the class of θ-standard words introduced by the authors in 2006
