Abstract This article deals with the hitherto scarcely researched life of Bernal Díaz del Castillo in Guatemala, country where he wrote the True History of the Conquest of New Spain in the second half of the 16th century. The first chapter examines the chronicle, its importance and main critical editions. The Bernal Diaz’s relationship with the history of Guatemala is addressed in the main chapter, exploring his behavior as an encomendero, his link with the indigenous people and the Guatemalan colonial regime. The last chapter delves in the chronicler, the circumstances and his motivation for writing the chronicle, as well as its place in the cultural and political imaginary of Guatemala. As a PostScript, a critical reference to the work of Christian Duverger (2012), who questions Bernal Díaz as the author of the chronicle, is presented
Bernal as Auteur: Primary Biographical Notes
The paper discloses selected author-considered details on Ishmael Bernal’s family and clan background that can provide further insights on his stature as an auteur, culled from a detailed clan story, which describes the values, problems, conflicts, quirks, and gifts of the clan that nurtured Bernal. It also considers a number of Bernal films and several previously unavailable writings in terms of their content, which indicate confluences in Bernal’s thinking with those of other family members. The paper uses the politique des auteurs, whose proponents uphold the primacy of the director as the creative force behind the creation of a film, although they also recognize filmmaking as a collaborative project. The paper strives to articulate certain manifestations of the visions which were manifest in Bernal’s films as well as his literary output
Modernity of the Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva España by Bernal Díaz del Castillo. Refutation and assertion
In this paper we analyze the modernity of the Historia verdadera de la conquista de la
Nueva España by Bernal Díaz del Castillo. Modernity that should not be understood as the vindication
of the author as one of the first novelists of the Hispanic literature, according to a wellknown
Carlos Fuentes’ thesis, but as the result of a particular way of enunciation that favours the
literal view of the world before the allegorical one of the chronicle. In order to do this, we carry
out a comparative study of the Bernal’s Historia verdadera and the Historia de la conquista de
México by the contemporary chronicler of Bernal Díaz del Castillo, and chaplain of Hernán
Cortés, Francisco López de Gómara
Formation of Bilayer Bernal Graphene: Layer-by-Layer Epitaxy via Chemical Vapor Deposition
We report the epitaxial formation of bilayer Bernal graphene on copper foil via chemical vapor deposition. The self-limit effect of graphene growth on copper is broken through the introduction of a second growth process. The coverage of bilayer regions with Bernal stacking can be as high as 67% before further optimization. Facilitated with the transfer process to silicon/silicon oxide substrates, dual-gated graphene transistors of the as-grown bilayer Bernal graphene were fabricated, showing typical tunable transfer characteristics under varying gate voltages. The high-yield layer-by-layer epitaxy scheme will not only make this material easily accessible but reveal the fundamental mechanism of graphene growth on copper.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000288061500033&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Chemistry, MultidisciplinaryChemistry, PhysicalNanoscience & NanotechnologyMaterials Science, MultidisciplinaryPhysics, AppliedPhysics, Condensed MatterSCI(E)168ARTICLE31106-11101
MIGUEL BERNAL JIMENEZ, THE THEMATIC NATIONALIST
Miguel Bernal Jiménez established a personal and contemporary musical language by combining Mexican folk elements with Gregorian chant, Baroque, and eighteenth-century musical traits. Although Bernal’s musical training took place in Italy and was strongly influenced by the Catholic religion, his small town upbringing cultivated a strong connection with the folkloric roots and customs of the people of México. I intend to examine the life and work of Miguel Bernal Jiménez, (1910-1956) with special emphasis on his Cuarteto Virreinal for string quartet (1937), a composition that depicts a distinct national character through the use of folk elements in the music. The Cuarteto Virreinal, one of Jiménez's best-known compositions and one of the better-known Mexican works for string quartet, was dedicated to his good friend and renowned Mexican composer Manuel M. Ponce and his distinguished wife Clemita. This composition is based upon the four traditional children’s folk songs A la víbora de la mar, Naranja dulce, limon partido, Pica, pica, pica, perico, and Pase la elegida, la niña dichosa. Bernal Jiménez masterfully shaped these songs into an intimate chamber music work for string quartet, entwining Baroque and Classical forms with traditional Mexican elements using a technique he called "elaboration." In addition to his achievements as a composer, Jiménez also had far-reaching influence as a teacher. He was director of two very important musical institutions in México: the School for Sacred Music in Morelia (1936-1954), and the Conservatorio de las Rosas (1945-1954). Moreover, in 1954, Jiménez was named Dean of the College of Music at Loyola University, in New Orleans. Despite his many accomplishments, relatively little in Spanish and virtually nothing in English has been published about him. For this project, I will consult Bernal’s diaries, which provide an invaluable insight to his innermost thoughts and feelings, and other primary sources such as the author’s manuscript scores and personal letters. These primary sources are not available in English and have not yet been published in Spanish. Some relevant passages will be included in the study with a translation by the author. Through communication with Mexican scholars and with the assistance of Dr. Howard Pollack, I was able to acquire access to all the documents currently stored at the Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, México. In addition to these primary sources, I will seek additional information through interviews with the composer’s relatives, distinguished students, and scholars in the field of Mexican music.Music, Moores School o
Based on unpublished texts, drawings and articles, the present work provides a glimpse into the
facet of the Chilean architect Juan Bernal Ponce as a historian of cities and architecture. His
studies of San José’s (Costa Rica) urban space are emphasized. Bernal Ponce proposed a detailed
analysis of multiple aspects of the surroundings, diachronically studying the constitution and spatial transmutation of San José, its population distribution, urban expansion and the characteristics of architectural styles, among others. In his work, it is evident not only a significant
contribution to the knowledge of Costa Rican urban history, but the process of recognition of
the foster country experienced by the author during his exile is also palpable; both attributes
materialized in the continuity and thoroughness of his research on the metropolitan landscape.Baseado em textos inéditos, desenhos e artigos, este texto fornece uma aproximação da faceta do
