The signal quality algorithm uses statistical methods on time-series and spectral analysis to locate high-frequency segments of the photoplethysmogram waveform. A photoplethysmogram pulse onset detector has been implemented for heart rate estimation. Application of the signal quality metric and photoplethysmogram pulse onset detector are demonstrated in an algorithm which suppresses false electrocardiogram critical arrhythmia alarms issued by bedside monitors in hospital intensive care units.by Anagha Vishwas Deshmane.M.Eng

    Abstract BAG3, a member of the BAG family of heat shock protein (HSP) 70 cochaperones, is expressed in response to stressful stimuli in a number of normal cell types and constitutively in a variety of tumors, including pancreas carcinomas, lymphocytic and myeloblastic leukemias, and thyroid carcinomas. Down-regulation of BAG3 results in cell death, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are still elusive. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanism of BAG3-dependent survival in human osteosarcoma (SAOS-2) and melanoma (M14) cells. We show that bag3 overexpression in tumors promotes survival through the NF-kappaB pathway. Indeed, we demonstrate that BAG3 alters the interaction between HSP70 and IKKgamma, increasing availability of IKKgamma and protecting it from proteasome-dependent degradation; this, in turn, results in increased NF-kappaB activity and survival. These results identify bag3 as a potential target for anticancer therapies in those tumors in which this gene is constitutively expressed. As a proof of principle, we show that treatment of a mouse xenograft tumor model with bag3siRNA-adenovirus that down-regulates bag3 results in reduced tumor growth and increased animal survival

    Intensified processes for FAME production from waste cooking oil: a technological review

    This article reviews the intensification of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) production from waste cooking oil (WCO) using innovative process equipment. In particular, it addresses the intensification of WCO feedstock transformation by transesterification, esterification and hydrolysis reactions. It also discusses catalyst choice and product separation. FAME production can be intensified via the use of a number of process equipment types, including as cavitational reactors, oscillatory baffled reactors, microwave reactors, reactive distillation, static mixers and microstructured reactors. Furthermore, continuous flow equipment that integrate both reaction and separation steps appear to be the best means for intensifying FAME production. Heterogeneous catalysts have also shown to provide attractive results in terms of reaction performance in certain equipment, such as microwave reactors and reactive distillation

    The male genital tract is a major site of HIV acquisition and transmission. It is an obvious site for inducing immune responses to candidate HIV vaccines, to prevent infection or halt the spread of the virus. There are relatively few published studies characterising T cells in the male genital tract. A challenge that hampers studies at this mucosal surface is obtaining samples with sufficient immune cells. Therefore, the first aim of this study was to establish an optimised method to isolate immune cells from the male genital tract. Cellular activation and inflammation in the genital tract have important implications for both transmission and acquisition of HIV, since they provide target cells for viral replication. Thus, the second and third aim of this study was to investigate mucosal T cell activation and inflammatory cytokine profiles in semen in HIV?infected and uninfected men, and compare the immune milieu of the genital tract with the systemic compartment
