Defining the length parameter in river bifurcation models: a theoretical approach

    No full text
One-dimensional models for river bifurcations rely on a nodal point relation that determines the distribution of sediments between the downstream branches. The most widely-adopted nodal point relation describes the two-dimensional topographic effects exerted by the bifurcation by introducing two computational cells, located just upstream the bifurcation node, that laterally exchange water and sediments. The results of this approach strongly depend on a dimensionless parameter that represents the ratio between the cell length and the main channel width, whose value needs to be empirically estimated. Previous works proposed calibrating this parameter on the basis of more complete two-dimensional linear models, which directly solve the momentum and mass conservation equations. This study demonstrates that a full consistency between the one-dimensional approach and the two-dimensional models can be directly achieved by adopting different scaling for the bifurcation cell length, which results in a theoretically-defined and constant dimensionless length parameter. Comparison with experimental observations reveals that this physically-based scaling yields more accurate predictions of bifurcation stability and discharge asymmetry. This indicates that the proposed method may provide a more reliable and precise estimation of the cell length, potentially improving the performance of one-dimensional models for bifurcation processes in rivers

How children acquire adjectives: Evidence from three eye-tracking studies on Italian

While the literature on early language acquisition has mainly focused on nouns and verbs, studies on adjectives are comparatively scarce and have thus far provided contrasting evidence on the timing and mode of acquisition of adjectival meaning in children younger than 4. This thesis presents three eye-tracking studies exploring the online processing of adjectives by children (2;4 – 5;3 years) in comparison to adult controls, providing insights on how linguistic information and visual context interact during real-time comprehension. Experiment 1 investigated potential differences in the interpretation of three classes of adjectives, intersective (e.g., red), relative (e.g., big) and absolute (e.g., full). 38 Italian monolingual children (2;4 – 5;3) were tested in a visual-world task, where they listened to noun-adjective combinations in a four-picture scenario. Results showed that children as young as 28 months were slower than adults when interpreting noun-adjective combinations, while their looking pattern in the interpretation process was essentially the same. Furthermore, the computation of intersective adjectives was faster than that of absolute and, especially, relative adjectives, showing that children are sensitive to the different ways in which each adjective class is interpreted within different contexts. In Experiment 2 the complexity of Experiment 1 was reduced by lowering the processing load associated with both the different semantic classes of adjectives and the four-picture scenario. 28 Italian-native children (2;4 – 5;2) were presented with a two-picture display while listening to nouns combined with color-adjectives. In Experiment 2, the visual conditions varied according to the informativeness of the noun or the adjective with respect to the target referent. Results showed evidence that adjective processing develops over time. When the computation of the noun was insufficient and the integration with the adjective was necessary to resolve reference, the youngest children, unlike 3- and 4-year-olds, failed to interpret adjectives correctly and, consequently, task resolution. Experiment 3 investigated children’s incremental processing of prenominal adjectives and their ability to predict the following noun based on the lexical meaning of the adjective. 39 Italian children (2;4 – 5;3) were tested in the online 3 interpretation of Italian predicative yes/no questions (e.g., È morbido il cuscino?, lit. ‘Is soft the pillow?’) while looking at two pictures on the screen. Here, the informativeness of the adjective was manipulated. Results showed that, when informative (e.g., soft, upon looking at a pillow and a bone), the adjective was processed incrementally, i.e., before the noun was heard, indicating that children as young as 28 months are able to predict the upcoming noun based on adjective meaning. Furthermore, children were successful independently of whether the interpretation of the adjective required world knowledge (e.g., being soft for a pillow) or the exploration of the visual scene (e.g., being open for a window). Taken together, the three studies provided compelling evidence of a continuous process in children’s development of sophisticated, adult-like processing skills. By means of eye-tracking, we were able to reveal that the overall difference between children and adults is mostly attributable to toddlers younger that 36 months of age, whose processing skills are still limited when it comes to the meaning computation of noun-adjective combinations. However, from the age of 3, children’s processing abilities improve rapidly and, within a few months, they become successful parsers

Free Alternate Bars in Rivers: Key Physical Mechanisms and Simple Formation Criterion

Free alternate bars are large-scale, downstream-migrating bedforms characterized by an alternating sequence of three-dimensional depositional fronts and scour holes that frequently develop in rivers as the result of an intrinsic instability of the erodible bed. Theoretical models based on two-dimensional shallow water and Exner equations have been successfully employed to capture the bar instability phenomenon, and to estimate bar properties such as height, wavelength and migration rate. However, the mathematical complexity of the problem hampered the understanding of the key physical mechanisms that sustain bar formation. To fill this gap, we considered a simplified version of the equations, based on neglecting the deformation of the free surface, which allows us to: (a) provide the first complete explanation of the bar formation mechanism as the result of a simple bond between variations of the water weight and flow acceleration; (b) derive a simplified, physically based formula for predicting bar formation in a river reach, depending on channel width-to-depth ratio, Shields number and relative submergence. Comparison with an unprecedented large set of laboratory experiments reveals that our simplified formula appropriately predicts alternate bar formation in a wide range of conditions. Noteworthy, the hypothesis of negligible free surface effect also implies that bar formation is fully independent of the Froude number. We show that this intriguing property is intimately related to the three-dimensional nature of river bars, which allows for a gentle lateral deviation of the flow without significant deformation of the water surface

On steady alternate bars forced by a localized asymmetric drag distribution in erodible channels

Studying the effect of different in-stream fluvial turbines siting on river morphodynamics allowed us to witness the onset of a time-Averaged, large-scale, alternate distortion of bed elevations, which could not be exclusively related to the turbine rotor blockage. The longitudinal profiles of this two-dimensional bathymetric perturbation resemble those of steady fluvial bars. In this contribution we generalize the problem addressing a spatially impulsive, asymmetric distribution of drag force in the channel cross-section. This is experimentally investigated through the deployment of differently sized grids perpendicular to the flow, and analytically explored as a finite perturbation of an open channel flow over an erodible sediment layer, as described by a coupled flow-sediment shallow water equation. The steady solutions of this fluvial morphodynamic problem, physically represented by alternate bars scaling with the channel width, highlight the importance of the resonant conditions in defining the spatial extent of the bed deformation. The equations further suggest that in very shallow flows any asymmetric obstruction may lead to an upstream propagation of the steady bars, consistent with previous studies on the effects of channel curvature. In broad terms, this study provides the preliminary framework to control the onset of river meandering through imposed finite perturbations of the cross-section. In a more applied sense, it provides a tool to predict non-local scour-deposition patterns associated with the deployment of energy converters or other flow obstructions

Polysaccharide Layer-by-Layer Coating for Polyimide-Based Neural Interfaces

Implantable flexible neural interfaces (IfNIs) are capable of directly modulating signals of the central and peripheral nervous system by stimulating or recording the action potential. Despite outstanding results in acute experiments on animals and humans, their long-term biocompatibility is hampered by the effects of foreign body reactions that worsen electrical performance and cause tissue damage. We report on the fabrication of a polysaccharide nanostructured thin film as a coating of polyimide (PI)-based IfNIs. The layer-by-layer technique was used to coat the PI surface due to its versatility and ease of manufacturing. Two different LbL deposition techniques were tested and compared: dip coating and spin coating. Morphological and physiochemical characterization showed the presence of a very smooth and nanostructured thin film coating on the PI surface that remarkably enhanced surface hydrophilicity with respect to the bare PI surface for both the deposition techniques. However, spin coating offered more control over the fabrication properties, with the possibility to tune the coating’s physiochemical and morphological properties. Overall, the proposed coating strategies allowed the deposition of a biocompatible nanostructured film onto the PI surface and could represent a valid tool to enhance long-term IfNI biocompatibility by improving tissue/electrode integration
