Learning style variations in a culturally diverse class: A case study
No full textCopyright © 2007 HERDSA and the authors Please find this paper under M for Muzychenko via link to the published version.Internationalisation of educational services creates cross-cultural challenges for universities because any education system is deeply rooted in a local cultural context, thus, reflecting a cultural dictate (Powell and Andersen, 1995; Porter and Samovar, 1994). To cope with the process of internationalisation, universities need to closely look at the area of teaching and learning (Taylor, 1997; Cadman, 2000). One of the issues to address is how to deal with the variety of learning style preferences present in a culturally diverse classroom, and more importantly, to systematically consider these styles when developing and delivering educational curriculum. This paper presents a case study of teaching in a multicultural environment where the student body consisted of five ethnic groups with four distinctly different learning style preferences. Suggestions are made to empirically test propositions put forward in this paper. No full textCopyright © Senate Hall Academic Publishing 2008The focus of this paper is on Entrepreneurial Global Mindset, an important cognitive capability and a source of sustainable competitive advantage for an international new venture. Developing a global mindset means acquiring a set of specific competencies. We put forward a definition of entrepreneurial global mindset and a model linking global mindset and its constituents to competencies and effective task performance. Based on the available evidence regarding what constitutes a global mindset in entrepreneurs and which mindset-related competencies are trainable rather than innate, we suggest that some of these competencies can and should be taught as part of the entrepreneurship education curriculum. One of the major trends arising from this has been an exponential growth in international education, principally emanating from the developed nations. Export of higher education services accounts for 3% of total world exports in services. In Australia and the USA education is the third and fifth service exporting industry respectively (Oosterlinck, 2002). Globalisation has created demand for new skills and knowledge due to an emphasis on international co-operation and understanding (Jenkins, 2001) coupled with the mobility of professionals, mass migration; and tourism around the world. As such intercultural skills are fast becoming key indicators of success in many professional fields including the higher education sector (Morey, 2000). Professionals within higher education are increasingly faced with major challenges associated with providing an effective teaching paradigm in an international setting. In academic tradition it is not the teaching that is emphasized, but an expertise within a discipline (Johnston, 1998) and as such often those who work in the higher education sector do not have formal teaching qualifications. It is not surprising therefore that today cross-cultural challenges are seen as most pressing in many academic circles around the world (Holton, 1997).
