Albrecht Dürer between Heinrich Wölfflin and Erwin Panofsky: notes on a double reading

    No full text

AbstractIn this essay the author proposes an overall reconsideration of Albrecht Dürer’s relationship with Vitruvius’ De Architectura, paying constant attention to the surviving sources. Furthermore, the author also investigates an overlooked aspect of this relationship that concerns the significant reception of Dürer’s treatises among Vitruvius’ translators and commentators between the XVIth and the XVIIth centuries

    Minna Albrecht

Minna married Friedrich Wilhelm Albrecht in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on 14th September 1925 and sailed for Sydney, Australia. From Sydney the couple travelled to South Australia, where Friedrich was appointed to the Hermannsburg Aboriginal mission on the Finke River in Central Australia. In 1926 the family arrived at the mission, Central Australia was in the early stages of what Aborigines called 'the seven year drought' cattle died and bush foods disappeared. The tribal Aborigines living on Crown land to the west came to the mission for food. During this period 85% of the babies born died despite the nursing efforts of Minna, the 'great dying' was a time they never forgot. Minna and Friedrich were told by many they were wasting their time and risking the lives of their own five children, nevertheless they stayed at Hermannsburg, believing God had called them there. Minna taught the Aboriginal women and their children sewing and crafts. The couple developed a special bond with the community and through their kindness and hospitality made lifelong friends and supporters who were always welcomed to their home. Minna lived at Hermannsburg with her family until 1962 retiring, firstly to Alice Springs, then eventually moving to Adelaide. Despite a long history of frail physical health and recurring battle with depression Minna was an integral part of her husband's achievements she was a person of great inner strength, her support gave him paradoxically the impetus and autonomy necessary to pursue his task with such single-mindedness.MissionaryGerma
