    No full text

Implementation of an Optically-Controlled antenna in a dual-band communications system: Systemic characterization with photonic down conversion

    No full text
This work presents the development of an optically controlled slot antenna, capable of operating at two different resonant frequencies, 2.5 GHz and 5.1 GHz. A silicon switch controls the frequency operation. The proposed antenna design was analyzed in terms of S-parameters and gain. Measured results show a difference of 20 dB for the reflection coefficient and 3 dB in the antenna gain, between the switch "on" and "off" states. The prototype was also tested under a data transmission in a multi band photonic down conversion system. Measurements results show the quality antenna performance in the reception compared to a fixed broadband antenna

Implementation of a Broadband Photonics-assisted RF Amplifier Toward 5G Networks

    No full text
We report the implementation of a photonics-assisted RF amplifier for broadband and multiband 5G networks. A 2 Gsymb/s signal with different digital modulation formats at 20 GHz and a 100 Msymb/s high-order digital modulated signal at 6 GHz have been used for characterizing the proposed technology as a function of the RF gain, signal-to-noise ratio and error vector magnitude. Experimental results demonstrate RF amplification, reconfigurability, distortion absence and low phase noise levels through 6, 20 and 38 GHz frequency bands, which have been considered potential for the future 5G networks

High Precision Displacement Measurements in presence of Multiple Scatterers using a Photonics-based Dual-band Radar

    No full text
In this work, a dual-band photonics-based radar system is described for precise displacement measures in a multi-target scenario. The radar has been designed for application of monitoring and prevention of possible structural failures of buildings and landslides. The radar system exploits the Stepped Frequency Continuous Wave (SFCW) signal modulation and differential phase measurements are carried out on each range bin to evaluate target displacements. The system effectiveness has been already demonstrated in presence of a single target. Here we present a numerical and experimental evaluation of the displacement estimation accuracy in the case of a multi-target scenario. Our study is focused to understand how the presence of multiple targets impacts on their displacement estimates. Simulation results show a typical accuracy of less than 0.2 mm for distances up to 400 m. These results are confirmed by preliminary experimental outcomes, which take into account different operative conditions in a first measure campaign with multiple targets. Finally, concluding remarks and perspectives draw the agenda for our future investigations

5G NR RoF System Based on a Monolithically Integrated Multi-Wavelength Transmitter

    No full text
We propose and demonstrate the use of a monolithically integrated multi-wavelength transmitter for multiband 5G new radio (NR) radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems, simultaneously operating in the standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes. The novel integrated photonic circuit, integrating eight tunable and directly modulated distributed feedback lasers, aims to reduce the transmitter complexity and footprint, enabling compact, high-performance and low-cost 5G solutions for frequencies up to 10 GHz. We report the implementation of a 4G/5G shared optical mobile fronthaul using two 5G NR and a LTE-A signals, evaluated in two distinct scenarios, as a function of root mean square error vector magnitude (EVMRMS) and in accordance to the 3GPP Release 15 requirements. In the first phase, three optical carriers in C-band are independently modulated with three mentioned RF signals, whereas subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) is applied to the second scenario for jointly modulating an optical carrier at 1554 nm. Gbit/s throughput is demonstrated for validating the applicability of our monolithically integrated multi-wavelength transmitter either for enabling multiapplication and/or diverse RF standards, using a single wavelength or multiservice exploiting different wavelengths from an unique optical source

A dual-band slotted waveguide antenna array for radars applications

    No full text
This paper describes the design and fabrication of a novel dual-band slotted waveguide antenna array for radar applications. The radiation structure is composed by two groups of slots, milled into the rectangular waveguide in opposite faces, enabling the antenna operation over two different frequency bands. Using this innovative structure becomes possible to perform diverse sorts of tracking using a unique structure for different radar applications, such as maritime navigation, surveillance and communications. Numerical results were obtained by ANSYS HFSS and measurements demonstrate two operational bandwidths over the S- and C-frequency bands. The antenna gain varies from 14.41dBi to 17.64dBi at 2.25GHz and 4.91GHz, respectively
