The tenth century in Iraq and Syria saw an unprecedented rise in the number of canonical poets who were delivering glorious praise hymns (madīḥ) to middling members of society. Scholars have posed many theories in the past 30 years to explain the function and purpose of praise hymns for royalty and rulers, but why would ordinary men who had no hope of rulership pay painful sums to commission praise hymns in their favor? This article examines the emergence of a new kind of sociability and patronage in the tenth century that enabled middling people to form alliances and exercise influence in shaping ideals of government, leadership and manhood. Examples are given of poems to patrons of middle rank who gain glory and influence via the artistic endorsement of al-Mutanabbī (d. 965): The first ode restores the public dignity of a nineteen-year-old soldier who lost his face in battle; in the second ode, the poet glorifies and defends a state clerk who had little-known Sufi leanings; in the third ode, the poet vindicates an unmasked pseudo- Muslim who was in private a Christian. Using J. Habermas’s theory of the “Public Sphere,” I show the way these odes illustrate how middling members of society gained influence in a public sphere of participation and took measures to preserve that influence.

This study carried out a qualitative investigation of the perceptions of a sample of instructional supervisors, senior supervisors and supervision leaders in the Sultanate of Oman, about the reality of instructional supervision in the Sultanate, in terms of its development in light of the current educational changes, in addition to the challenges that still hinder the supervisors from achieving the goals of the supervisory process. Data was collected through group interviews with a sample of 60 individuals from five governorates: Muscat, Dhofar, Al Batinah South, Al-Sharqiya North, and Musandam. The results indicated that there was a number of positive changes that the participants considered to be a sign of development in the supervisory process, such as diversification in supervisory methods, empowering the senior teacher as a resident (school-based) supervisor, employing technology in the supervisory process, and developing supervision training. However, the results also showed a number of challenges that the participants thought would hinder supervision from achieving its goals, including administrative and organizational challenges, financial and material challenges, and technical challenges. The study concluded with a number of recommendations to improve instructional supervision in the Sultanate

The persistence growth of Egypt's public domestic debt has raised concerns regarding its impact on economic growth and fears are being express about the debt sustainability. Utilizing data for the period 1981-2006, the results obtained from cointegration model reveal that the public domestic debt in Egypt has a robust negative impact on growth. The sustainability of debt was examined used some algebra methods. The results suggested that the recent path of debt followed in Egypt was sustainable. For debt to remain sustained in future, substantial fiscal reforms are needed and policies should be adopting to maintain an increasing growth-interest rate differential.Public Domestic Debt; Fiscal Budget; Debt Sustainability; Economic Growth; Cointegration.

Despite the usage of nanoparticles (NPs) is rapidly increasing, several experts have noted the risk of their release into ecosystems and their potential negative impacts on biological systems. However, the available studies on the neurobehavioral impacts of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3NPs) on aquatic organisms are little. Hence, this study targeted to ascertain the harmful effects of Al2O3NPs on behavioral characteristics and genotoxic and oxidative damages in Nile tilapia fish. In addition, the beneficial role of chamomile essential oil (CEO) supplementation in reducing these effects was also investigated. In the current study, fish were distributed into 4 equal groups (n = 60 fish per group). The control group was fed a plain diet only, the CEO group received a basic diet complemented with CEO at a level of 2 mg/kg diet, the ALNP group received a basic diet and was exposed to an approximate concentration of 1/10th LC50 of ALNPs nearly 5.08 mg/L, and the combination group (ALNPs/ CEO group) received a basal diet coadministered with ALNPs and CEO at the aforementioned percentages. The findings revealed that O. niloticus exhibit neurobehavioral changes along with changes in the level of GABA, monoamines in the brain tissue, and serum amino acid neurotransmitters, besides a reduction of AChE and Na+/K+-ATPase activities. In addition to brain tissue oxidative damage with upregulation of proinflammatory and stress genes, such as HSP70 and caspase-3, supplementation of CEO significantly reduced the negative impacts of ALNPs. These results showed that CEO has neuroprotective, antioxidant, genoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties in fish that have been exposed to ALNPs. Therefore, we advise its usage as a valuable addition to fish diet

A Comparative Study of Prediction Techniques for Supersonic Missile Aerodynamic Coefficients / Loai A. El-Mahdy … [et al.]

    No full text
Evaluating the aerodynamic coefficients of flying vehicles such as missiles is a key step in their design and development procedures. In practice, the aerodynamic coefficients can be estimated using experimental measurements, numerical simulations, or using empirical and semi-empirical engineering tools. In the present paper, these three approaches are compared in the context of examining the aerodynamic coefficients of a fin-stabilized tactical missile. Supersonic flight conditions up to Mach 4 at incidence up to 18 degrees are considered. Lift and drag coefficients as well as the centre of pressure locations based on the three approaches are compared. The flow features around the missile are explored based on the numerical simulations

The effect of friction stir processing (FSP) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a semi-solid cast AA2024-1wt.%Al2O3 nanocomposite was investigated. For comparison, plates of unreinforced AA2024 alloy were also cast and processed at the same FSP conditions (400 rpm, 20mm/min). The microstructure of all the produced materials was investigated using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). Microhardness and tensile tests were carried out on the unreinforced AA2024 alloy and AA2024-Al2O3 nanocomposite before and after FSP. The addition of 1wt% of Al2O3 nanoparticles significantly reduced the grain size of both the cast and FSPed microstructures, leading to a grain size reduction from 28 μm to 18 μm in the cast condition, and from 3.7 μm to 2.7 μm after FSP. The application of FSP to AA2024-Al2O3 nanocomposite enhanced the tensile strength and yield strength by 71% and 30%, respectively, in comparison to the as cast matrix, as a result of the uniform distribution of Al2O3 reinforcement and grain refinement of Al matrix. The combined application of compocasting and FSP resulted to be a promising method to treat casting defects and to produce nanocomposites characterised by good reinforcement dispersion and high strength and ductility
