‘Synge we now alle and sum’: three Fifteenth-Century collections of communal song: a study of British Library, Sloane MS 2593; Bodleian Library, MS Eng. poet. e.1; and St John’s College, Cambridge, MS S.54
The manuscripts British Library, Sloane MS 2593, Bodleian Library, MS Eng. poet. e.1, and St John’s College, Cambridge, MS S.54 are compact collections of song lyrics written during the fifteenth century, largely without notation. My thesis seeks to develop responsive ways of reading these anthologies and uses the manuscripts to illumine the creative processes that produced and circulated their songs. I integrate attention to song lyrics within the material books and exploration of wider textual networks. As many of the anthologies’ texts are in
carol form, a combination of refrain parts and stanzas, the books provide an opportunity to examine the form’s identity and significance within fifteenth-century English songwriting.
The thesis is in three parts and the first introduces critical approaches to the manuscripts and the carol, followed by an examination of the books and their contexts, especially manuscripts with which the anthologies have textual connections. The central section investigates the songs’ production and circulation by examining textual networks, how the anthologies were written, how the songs may have been performed, and the role of memory in shaping the songs and anthologies. The final part explores women’s role in the songs, the range of forms used, and the centrality of the many imagined voices and performances within the texts.
This is the first extended study focused upon these three sources, which as anthologies offer insight into ways songs were shared and organised. I investigate the role of short collections and booklets in the construction of longer
anthologies, and the possibility of an especially productive song culture within fifteenth-century East Anglia. Rather than repeating assertions familiar from
earlier studies of carols that the anthologies’ songs are either popular or clerical productions, I suggest how the anthologies engage with communal performance cultures and participate in varied song traditions, from liturgy to lullaby

Evidence for production
Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have found evidence for the production of the excited charmed baryon state Λ c (2593) + in the channel Λ c + π + π − . Its mass was determined to be (2594.6±0.9±0.4) MeV/c 2 , and the natural width measured to be Γ = (2.9 −2.1−1.4 +2.9+1.8 ) MeV. The production cross section times the branching ratios of σ ( e + e − → Λ c (2593) + X ) × Br ( Λ c (2593) + → Λ c + π + π − ) × Br ( Λ c + → pK − π + ) was measured to be (0.25 −0.13 +0.24 ±0.13) pb. The fractions of Λ c (2593) + decays proceeding through the Σ c 0 π + and Σ c ++ π − channels were determined to be 0.29±0.10±0.11 and 0.37±0.12±0.13, respectively

Turkey as a Bridgehead and Spearhead: Integrating EU and Turkish Foreign Policy. CEPS EU-Turkey Working Papers No. 1, 1 August 2004
This paper starts with the assumption that the EU will decide to open accession negotiations with Turkey at the end of 2004 and in this context it explores the potential for the integration of EU and Turkish foreign, security and defence policies in the pre-accession period. The evolving nature of both the EU and Turkey as foreign policy actors is considered, with attention drawn to the effective graduations in the nature of the EU’s external borders as it extends its membership and association arrangements deeper into the south-eastern periphery. Turkish capabilities are reviewed, ranging from the subjective arguments about its experience as a democratising, secular state of largely Muslim culture, through to objective assets such as military capabilities and cultural affinities with various neighbouring peoples. With the Turkish neighbourhood thus becoming the EU’s wider neighbourhood, the paper reviews how far the EU and Turkey may be convergent in their interests and complementary in their capabilities in such regions as the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Middle East and Central Asia. The paper concludes with the assessment that Turkey stands to be an unequivocal asset for the EU’s external policies

Evaluating the safety and efficacy of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei TISTR 2593 as a therapeutic probiotic for obesity prevention
Several recent studies have reported the potential of probiotics in reducing body weight and fat mass and improving glucose and lipid metabolism. Therefore, probiotic administration is considered an alternative approach for treating obesity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the probiotic properties and antiadipogenic potential of the strain TISTR 2593. Through whole-genome sequence analysis, the strain TISTR 2593 was identified as Lacticaseibacillus paracasei. L. paracasei TISTR 2593 exhibited γ-hemolytic activity (nonhemolysis) and demonstrated susceptibility to antibiotics, indicating that it is generally safe for consumption. Additionally, this strain displayed desirable probiotic properties, including tolerance to artificial gastric juice and bile salts, adhesion to Caco-2 cells, and the ability to inhibit pathogens. Furthermore, L. paracasei TISTR 2593 exhibited cholesterol-reducing capability and demonstrated antiadipogenic activity. In 3T3-L1 adipocytes, treatment with 10% (w/v) heated L. paracasei TISTR 2593 cells resulted in an approximately 50% reduction in lipid accumulation, similar to the positive control (quercetin). Moreover, L. paracasei TISTR 2593 heat-killed cells dose-dependently decreased the expression levels of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-α and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ, two vital transcription factors involved in the early stage of adipocyte differentiation. These findings suggest that L. paracasei TISTR 2593 possesses probiotic and functional properties, including antiadipogenic activity, supporting its potential as a therapeutic probiotic supplement for preventing obesity. Overall, the results of this study indicate that L. paracasei TISTR 2593 exhibits promising probiotic characteristics and beneficial effects on adipogenesis modulation, reinforcing its potential as a therapeutic option in obesity prevention
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
