The Hansa city of Visby experienced a brutal attack by the danish king Valdemar Atterdag in 1361. Many stories have appeared afterwards about the time of the battle. The aim of this paper is to look at what material findings can tell us about the time before and after the battle, and if one from these findings can confirm or refute that the city experienced a drastic decline after the battle in 1361. The focus of this paper is what material findings can tell us about the life in medieval Visby. Amongst findings are warehouses with latrines, churches, church ruins and the citywall. In addition we have findings of mass graves from the battle.
Age determination of material findings can tell us something about whether or not there has been a dramatic stop in trade, new buildings or development in the city after 1361. From findings in different sources used in this paper, it is not possible to conclude that a dramatic decline has occured in Visby after the battle in 1361. The decline seems to have started in the early 1300 and continued evenly throughout the century. But one can nevertheless not unambiguously refute a drastic decline after 1361
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
