Oppositional Music Mash Ups: Populist Manifestations in Online Criticism to UK Conservative Government Actions
No full textGlobally, populism is on the rise, evident in Putin’s Russia, Oban’s Hungary and Trump’s America. The UK’s Conservative governments since Margaret Thatcher have also been accused of being populist, despite populism, in all its forms, being divisive and polarising. One sphere in which we find resistance to populist governments is digital popular culture. Though memes, mash ups, parodies, animations and other forms of popular culture on social media are dismissed by some as “just a bit of fun”, scholars have shown how these can also be political, infused and shaped by power relations and ideologies. Leaning on Multimodal Critical Discourse Studies, this paper analyses written and spoken lexica, images and musical sounds in a sample of musical mash ups produced by @PoliticsJOE. This analysis reveals how these rely on forms of populism as they represent and recontextualise UK Conservative governments and their actions from 2019 to 2024. It is through such a close reading that I consider the role(s) such digital popular culture can play in public discourse
Illiberalism in Israeli Public Opinion
No full textIsrael has long identified as a democracy. However, scholars have expressed concerns that it is engaged in democratic backsliding (Kremnitzer and Shany 2020; Oren and Waxman 2022). Despite holding repeated elections, its liberal credentials are weakening, as the rule of law and judicial independence are threatened. Institutionally, then, it is fulfilling Dahl's (1971) contestation requirement for democracy but not the inclusiveness requirement. At the citizen level, there is questionable democratic culture (Inglehart and Welzel 2003). If the public supports electoral institutions but not liberal values, then the democracy's foundation is weak (Mounk 2018). This article analyzes recent Israeli public opinion data on political attitudes and regime preferences - the Israel National Election Survey (2022) and an original iPanel survey (2024) - with machine learning techniques. Both datasets demonstrate that while Israelis assert a preference for democracy, they are open to non-democratic alternatives and illiberal policies. The community is particularly divided on minority rights (i.e. Palestinian Citizen of Israel rights) and free expression/protest rights. As such, democracy is on shaky foundations in Israel in the face of the ongoing democratic recession
Il contributo delle tecnologie e dell’IA nell’educazione fisica e sportiva e per la promozione della salute
No full textRiassunto: L’educazione fisica e sportiva è chiamata ad affrontare non poche sfide negli ultimi anni: la problematica della crescente sedentarietà tra bambini e adolescenti, sempre meno attivi e sempre più sedentari che limita le valenze formative e gli effetti preventivi e protettivi dell’esercizio e l’uso delle tecnologie e dell’Intelligenza artificiale. Se da un lato si rileva un deciso ampliamento dell’epistemologia dell’educazione fisica dall’altro si richiedono nuove competenze per i docenti ed una rinnovata e più ampia relazione scuola-famiglia. L’integrazione tecnologica può favorire una pratica motoria più consapevole, estende l’intervento educativo oltre l’ambiente scolastico e può migliorare l’efficacia della didattica in tutte le sue fasi. Il seguente contributo analizza le opportunità didattiche più recenti offerte dall’evoluzione tecnologica, con un focus sull’intelligenza artificiale nell’insegnamento dell’educazione fisica e sul contributo per la promozione della salute, valorizzando l’apprendimento motorio e stili di vita attivi in una prospettiva educativa long life education. Parole chiave: Tecnologie, Intelligenza artificiale, Epistemiologia, educazione fisica, apprendimento motorio Abstract: Physical and sports education has been called to face several challenges in recent years: the growing issue of sedentary behavior among children and adolescents who are increasingly inactive and sedentary, limits both the educational value and the preventive and protective effects of exercise, as well as the integration of new technologies and artificial intelligence. On one hand, there is a clear expansion of the epistemology of physical education; on the other, new competencies are required for teachers, along with a renewed and strengthened school–family relationship. Technological integration can support more conscious motor practice, extend educational intervention beyond the school environment, and enhance the effectiveness of teaching in all its phases. This paper analyzes the most recent educational opportunities offered by technological advancements, with a focus on artificial intelligence in physical education teaching and its contribution to health promotion, emphasizing motor learning and active lifestyles within a lifelong education perspective. No full textRiassunto: Il contributo rilegge la pedagogia dell’infanzia alla luce dell’ipercomplessità contemporanea, al fine di interpretare in modo più adeguato le sfide poste dalla società post-mediale e post-umana. L’obiettivo è delineare una visione che integri nella pedagogia dimensione tecnologica, etica e relazionale. Orientando le nuove generazioni verso una cittadinanza consapevole, inclusiva e democratica, in linea con i principi dell’umanesimo relazionale e della relazione educativa.Parole chiave: Intelligenza Artificiale; complessità; relazione educativa.Abstract: This contribution reinterprets early childhood pedagogy in light of contemporary hypercomplexity, aiming to provide a more adequate understanding of the challenges posed by post-media and post-human societies. Differences in Male and Female Political Communication: A Literature Review on the Specifics of Nonverbal Communication of Women in Politics
No full textThe following text reviews literature on nonverbal communication of women in politics. Our analysis is primarily centred on studies published between 2005 and 2020. The majority of research in the studies covers short periods of time, ranging from several months to one year, and is focused on the Western world. The findings suggest women politicians use a specific type of communication, the so-called mixed model of communication, which includes "female" nonverbal and "male" verbal communication. Contrary to the assumptions, however, voters appreciate this relatively contradictory way of communication, and are critical, on the other hand, if the communication of women politicians is too "masculine". The findings suggest that gender stereotypes use in politics may be beneficial for women politicians

Le effigi inginocchiate dei Baroni pugliesi tra memoria e rappresentazione
No full textItIl saggio discute una serie di allestimenti devozionali e funerari realizzati tra primo Quattrocento e primo Cinquecento all'interno di alcune chiese pugliesi legate alle famiglie Orsini Del Balzo, Chiaromonte e Acquaviva d'Aragona. Attraverso l'analisi dei casi di Galatina, Taranto, Copertino e Conversano, ci si concentrerà su come le effigi di alcuni membri di tali tre famiglie, rappresentati come figure in pietra dipinta, a dimensione naturale, inginocchiati e in atto di pregare, libere da ogni cornice scultorea e architettonica, siano divenute elementi centrali di complessi allestimenti funerari e votivi con una forte dimensione spaziale che non sembra avere precedenti. Rispetto a una certa diffusione delle statue oranti in Europa, le effigi dei baroni e baronesse pugliesi si configurano come un gruppo coerente e riconoscibile che, nato in un contesto geografico e familiare preciso, esercitò un notevole impatto sulla committenza nella capitale del Regno ma anche nel più ampio panorama europeo.EnThis essay discusses a series of devotional and funerary installations created between the early fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries within several churches in Puglia connected with the Orsini Del Balzo, Chiaromonte, and Acquaviva d'Aragona families. Through analysis of the cases of Galatina, Taranto, Copertino, and Conversano, it focuses on how the effigies of some members of these three families - represented as life-size painted stone figures, kneeling and praying, free from any sculptural or architectural frame - became central elements of complex funerary and votive settings with a strong spatial dimension that appears to be unprecedented. Compared to a certain diffusion of praying statues in Europe since the Middle Ages, the effigies of the barons and baronesses in Puglia appear to be a coherent and recognizable group which, born in a specific geographical and family context, had a notable impact on the patronage in the capital of the Kingdom as well in the wider European context
