L'Hirpinia fra III e I sec. a.C.: agro pubblico, assegnatari viritani, giurisdizione delegata, assetto istituzionale
EnThe ager publicus populi Romani in Hirpinia was established after the Hannibal's war, as a punishment of the rebel communities. Lands were distributed among veterans of Scipio, Gracchan assignees, veterans of Sulla and beneficiaries of the lex Iulia agraria (59 BC.). The praefecti of the praetor urbanus administered the justice for them. Around mid- I century BC., the land assignees located in the upper valley of the Calore and of the Ofanto were confered to Compsa, while those in the valley of the Ansanto were organized into an autonomous local community whose identity is still unknown.
Translating into Italian Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland (1915)
Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland (1915) setting is considered the first feminist literary utopia centred on a land inhabited and governed by women. During the geographical and metaphorical journey of three male characters through fictional locations in South America, they gradually question the working mechanism of the patriarchal order, discussing the hegemonic discourse, binary opposition, and the culturally embedded assumptions about gender. In the following essay I will analyse some passages from the Italian translation Terradilei (1980) by Angela Campana and Terra di lei (2011) by Anna Scacchi, with a short reference to Franco Venturi’s version, published in 2015, in order to discuss the complex concepts of the active presence and creativity of the translator in the text, a self-sufficient node in a dynamic web, connected with the principle of fidelity in translation
Biopolíticas del trabajo en Rafael Arévalo Martínez
This paper reflects on the relationship between the power of life and the regulation of work in the short story by Guatemalan author Rafael Arévalo Martínez, “Por cuatrocientos dólares (Un guatemalteco en Alaska)”, published in the seventh edition (1951) of the collection El hombre que parecía un caballo (The Man Who Looked Like a Horse) (1915). Drawing on the studies of Foucault, Deleuze, Gabriel Giorgi, and others on biopolitics, this paper seeks to investigate the fictionalization of the rationalization of life in the productive world—or, in other words, the narrative tension between the power of life and governmentality, the counterpoint between irreverent feasting and the organization of bodily consumption in industrial production. The aim of this work is to define the role of queer aesthetics and baroque style, both in terms of form and content, in the definition of a subalternity (from the point of view of work and social role) as one of the key tensions that characterizes modernity
