Evaluación de metales pesados en suelo, agua y plantas cultivadas en un agroecosistema periurbano de un valle interandino del Perú
Heavy metals (HM) in agroecosystems represent an environmental concern posing risks to food safety. This study evaluated the presence of HM in irrigation water, agricultural soil, and cultivated plants (CP) within a peri-urban horticultural agroecosystem in Huanuco-Peru. A total of 19 random soil and CP samples, plus two water samples, were collected and analyzed in alaboratory accredited by the National Quality Institute (INACAL). Results showed no contamination in irrigation water with a pollution load index (PLI) of 0.0006, whereas agricultural soil (PLI=7.42) and plant samples (PLI=1.70) exhibitedcontamination. The interaction between plant material and irrigation water revealed higher accumulation of Zn, Cd, Cr, and Pb, likely due to transport by dilution. In conclusion, both soil and plant components of the horticultural agroecosystem showed contamination by heavy metals, which is exacerbated by their mobilization through irrigation water. Se recolectaron 19 muestras aleatorias tanto de suelo como de PC, y 2 muestras de agua, que fueron analizadas en un laboratorio acreditado porel Instituto Nacional de Calidad (INACAL). Los resultados revelan que no existe contaminación en el agua de riego con un índice de carga de contaminación (ICC) de 0,0006, mientras que evidencia contaminación en el suelo agrícola (ICC=7,42) y en las PC (ICC=1,70). La interacción PC*Agua de riego presenta mayor acumulación de Zn, Cd, Cr y Pb, provocado por el transporte en dilución. En conclusión, los componentes suelo y plantas cultivadas del agroecosistema hortícola presentan niveles de contaminación por metales pesados, los cuales se agravan por su movilización a través del agua de riego. Mejorar los resultados educativos postsecundarios de los jóvenes en acogida temporal prolongada: una evaluación de los efectos de My First Place
Young people in foster care continue to lag behind their peers with respect to postsecondary educational attainment. This study examines whether participation in an education and employment program that provides fully subsidized housing to young people currently or formerly in extended foster care is associated with better postsecondary educational outcomes (i.e., college enrollment, semester completion, and credential attainment). The study compares the postsecondary educational outcomes of young people who participated in the program to the postsecondary educational outcomes of a propensity score matched sample of young people who were eligible for the program but did not participate using program data and data from the National Student Clearinghouse. Participating in My First Place (MFP) increased the hazard of enrolling in college by 32 percent and the hazard of completing a semester by 39 percent. However, participating in MFP had no effect on the hazard of earning a credential. The findings contribute to the evidence base for interventions that improve the postsecondary educational outcomes of young people transitioning out of extended foster care.Os jovens em acolhimento familiar continuam a ficar para trás em relação aos seus pares no que diz respeito ao nível de escolaridade pós-secundária. Este estudo examina se a participação num programa de educação e emprego que oferece alojamento totalmente subsidiado a jovens que estão ou estiveram em acolhimento familiar prolongado está associada a melhores resultados escolares pós-secundários (ou seja, matrícula na faculdade, conclusão do semestre e obtenção de credenciais). O estudo compara os resultados educacionais pós-secundários dos jovens que participaram no programa com os resultados educacionais pós-secundários de uma amostra de jovens com propensão igual, elegíveis para o programa, mas que não participaram, utilizando dados do programa e dados do National Student Clearinghouse. A participação no MFP aumentou o risco de matrícula na faculdade em 32 percentage e o risco de conclusão de um semestre em 39 percentage. No entanto, a participação no MFP não teve efeito sobre o risco de obtenção de um diploma. As conclusões contribuem para a base de evidências para intervenções que melhoram os resultados educacionais pós-secundários de jovens em transição para fora do acolhimento prolongado.Las personas jóvenes en acogida temporal siguen estando por detrás de sus compañeros en lo que respecta al nivel educativo postsecundario. Este estudio examina si la participación en un programa de educación y empleo que proporciona alojamiento totalmente subvencionado a jóvenes que se encuentran actualmente o se han encontrado anteriormente en acogida temporal prolongada está relacionada con mejores resultados educativos postsecundarios (es decir, matriculación universitaria, finalización de semestres y obtención de títulos). El estudio compara los resultados educativos postsecundarios de los jóvenes que participaron en el programa con los resultados educativos postsecundarios de una muestra emparejada por puntuación de propensión de jóvenes que eran elegibles para el programa, pero no participaron, utilizando datos del programa y datos del National Student Clearinghouse. La participación en el MFP aumentó el riesgo de matricularse en la universidad en un 32 por ciento y el riesgo de completar un semestre en un 39 por ciento. Sin embargo, la participación en el MFP no tuvo ningún efecto sobre el riesgo de obtener un título. Juventud, ocio y gestión del tiempo libre: una necesidad formativa en Melilla
Time management is an essential skill for everyone, especially young people, who often face the pressure of balancing studies, work, social life, and other responsibilities. However, formal education on how to effectively organize time is not always provided. While it is possible to learn independently, receiving guidance on how to better allocate time, distinguish between urgent and important tasks, and understand the fundamentals of the process can make a significant difference in terms of productivity and personal well-being.Based on this premise, the present article aims to analyze the importance that young people from Melilla attribute to time management and to explore the significance they place on acquiring self-regulation skills. This study is based on qualitative research in which data was collected through interviews conducted with 97 participants, all of whom were young residents of the city of Melilla, aged between 18 and 35 years, selected incidentally. The results highlight the need for engaging in leisure activities during free time to achieve personal, physical, and psychological well-being, as well as learning how to manage, organize, and plan their time effectively to achieve goals and increase productivity. Finally, the findings emphasize the relevance and usefulness of teaching time management, both formally and informally.A gestão do tempo é uma habilidade essencial para qualquer pessoa, especialmente para os jovens, que frequentemente enfrentam a pressão de equilibrar estudos, trabalho, vida social e outras responsabilidades. No entanto, muitas vezes não recebem uma educação formal sobre como organizar o tempo de maneira eficaz. Embora seja possível aprender de forma autodidata, receber orientação sobre como distribuir melhor o tempo, aprender a identificar o que é urgente e o que é importante, e compreender o processo fundamental pode fazer a diferença em termos de produtividade e bem-estar pessoal.Com base nessa fundamentação, o presente artigo pretende analisar a relevância que os jovens melillenses atribuem à gestão do tempo e aprofundar a importância que conferem à aquisição de habilidades de autorregulação. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa na qual foram coletados dados por meio da técnica de entrevista, aplicada a 97 participantes selecionados de maneira incidental, todos jovens residentes na cidade de Melilla, com idades entre 18 e 35 anos. Os resultados destacam a necessidade de realizar atividades de lazer no tempo livre para alcançar bem-estar pessoal, físico e psicológico, além de aprender a gerenciar, organizar e planejar o tempo de forma eficaz para atingir objetivos e ser mais produtivo. Por fim, evidencia-se a relevância e a utilidade do ensino da gestão do tempo, tanto em nível formal quanto informal.La gestión del tiempo es una habilidad esencial para cualquier persona, especialmente para la juventud, quienes a menudo enfrentan la presión de equilibrar estudios, trabajo, vida social y otras responsabilidades. Sin embargo, muchas veces no se recibe una educación formal sobre cómo organizar el tiempo de manera efectiva. Si bien se puede aprender de forma autodidacta, recibir orientación sobre cómo distribuir mejor el tiempo, aprender a identificar lo urgente de lo importante, y comprender lo fundamental del proceso puede marcar la diferencia en términos de productividad y bienestar personal.
Bajo esta fundamentación, el presente artículo pretende analizar la relevancia que los y las jóvenes melillenses otorgan a la gestión del tiempo, y ahondar en la importancia que estos confieren a la adquisición de las habilidades de autorregulación. Se parte de una investigación cualitativa donde se recogieron datos a través de la técnica de la entrevista dirigida a 97 participantes seleccionados de manera incidental, siendo todos/as jóvenes residentes en la Ciudad de Melilla con una edad comprendida entre 18 y 35 años. Los resultados muestran la necesidad de realizar actividades de ocio en su tiempo libre para adquirir un bienestar personal, físico y psicológico, así como aprender a saber gestionar, organizar y planificar su tiempo para lograr objetivos y ser más productivos. Finalmente, se evidencia la relevancia en la utilidad de la enseñanza de la gestión del tiempo, tanto a nivel formal como informal
Osteitis pubis in athletes: How should it be treated during professional competition?
Introduction Osteitis pubis, also known as pubalgia, is a mainly chronic injury, very common, which significantly affects the career of athletes, mainly men and young athletes, reappearing repeatedly because it occurs in an area that is constantly active in sports life, making it difficult to rest and thus generating numerous recurrences. Objectives Establish a proper management to treat this injury, taking into account the high competitiveness, and understand and know which is the most effective treatment method between surgical and conservative. Materials and methods A complete investigation will be carried out from different articles and studies carried out by health professionals about different treatments of osteitis pubis and at what time of the injury they were performed, from these to draw a conclusion according to the different results. Results: Different studies were reviewed,76 athletes with a diagnosis of pubalgia, were treated with conservative methods averaging a return to activity between 3 and 6 months depending on the stage of the injury. Injection therapy showed positive results in some patients at 3-8 weeks, while other patients after 25 weeks of injection did not benefit. 198 patients were studied for surgical treatment, on average, prior to surgery, presented preoperative symptoms for 15 months and averaged a recovery time of 9 months to regain competitiveness. Conclusion: OP should be treated according to the type of lesion of each patient, it should always be started with conservative treatment, ignoring infiltrative therapies, it should not wait more than 3 months to opt for surgical treatment
Palmitoylethanolamide as an emerging therapy for neurodegenerative diseases
Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) was studied for its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Recent research has shown that it protects HT-22 neuronal cells from oxidative stress caused by hypoxia and reoxygenation, through the activation of signalling pathways such as pAkt and ERK1/2. In addition, it modulates the activation of microglia and astrocytes, reducing inflammation and neuronal damage. Its action did not depend on the CB2 receptor, which indicated a novel mechanism. Its therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative diseases such as ischaemic stroke, which is common in Latin America, was highlighted. Although its safety profile was favourable, additional clinical studies were indicated for its implementation. Regional cooperation was presented as a key factor in advancing its clinical application
La presencia de marcas de moda en prime time. La Revuelta de TVE
Introduction: The collaboration or placement of brands in audiovisual content and the hiring of celebrities (influencers) as endorsers are not new techniques; however, they have gained renewed momentum in the digital society, particularly in areas traditionally restricted to conventional advertising. This study examines the presence of fashion brands as collaborators on La Revuelta, one of the most-watched television programs in Spain. Methodology: We analyzed the first 58 episodes aired in 2024 through a content analysis approach to identify the characteristics of these brands, the duration and manner of their placement, as well as their connections to the content, characters, and guests. Results:Among the fashion brands collaborating with the program, we observe a coexistence between small-scale brands—mainly aligned with youthful and urban styles—and large multinational corporations producing sportswear. Discussion:In the collaboration format, brand presence on screen is not mediated by a financial transaction, yet it can generate comparable visibility. This approach can be particularly advantageous for independent, small-scale, or emerging brands. By serving as an alternative to conventional advertising or product placement, it enables these brands to compete on equal footing, reaching large audiences. Conclusions: The association of brands with the various personalities appearing on the program is not incidental; rather, it appears to be guided by a criterion of affinity between the brands and the character and/or personality of these individuals.Introducción: La colaboración o emplazamiento de marcas en contenidos audiovisuales y la contratación de celebridades (influencers) como prescriptores no son técnicas nuevas, pero han obtenido un nuevo impulso en la sociedad digital y especialmente en ámbitos restringidos a la publicidad convencional. Analizamos la presencia de marcas de moda como colaboradoras de La Revuelta, uno de los programas de televisión con mayor audiencia en España. Metodología: Estudiamos los primeros 58 programas emitidos en 2024 a través de un análisis de contenido para descubrir las características de estas marcas, su tiempo y forma de inserción, así como las conexiones con los contenidos, personajes e invitados. Resultados: Entre las marcas de moda que colaboran con el programa encontramos una convivencia entre firmas de pequeño tamaño, alineadas preferentemente con el estilo juvenil y urbano, con grandes marcas multinacionales productoras de material deportivo. Discusión: En el formato colaboración la presencia de la marca en pantalla no está mediada por una contraprestación económica pero sí puede dar lugar a una notoriedad similar. Es un recurso que puede resultar muy apropiado para marcas independientes, de pequeño tamaño o emergentes. Esta vía alternativa a la publicidad o al emplazamiento convencional les permite competir en igualdad de condiciones llegando a audiencias masivas. Conclusiones: La asociación de marcas a los diferentes personajes que aparecen en el programa no es casual, sino que parece responder a un criterio de afinidad entre las marcas y el carácter y/o personalidad de estos
Solitary spinal osteochondroma in childhood. Case report
Introduction: Osteochondroma is the most common benign bone tumor in children. These are benign cartilage-forming lesions. Spinal involvement is rare, and even more so in the solitary form, representing 1 to 4% of lesions. The overlapping course of its symptoms and signs delays diagnosis. Vertebral bone x-rays and soft tissue ultrasound are useful studies to corroborate suspicion. Other methods such as computed axial tomography and magnetic resonance imaging allow assessment of canal and neuroradicular involvement. This allows for early treatment and prevents deformities or permanent neurological damage. The objective of this article is to present a pediatric case of solitary spinal osteochondroma in which imaging studies were very useful for the diagnosis, corroborated by histopathological examination of the lesion.Clinical case: A 7-year-old female patient presented clinically with an increase in lumbar spine volume over the past year. Imaging studies such as ultrasound, lumbosacral X-ray, and computed tomography (CT) scan were used to diagnose the condition, which was confirmed by histopathological examination of the lesion following surgery. The patient's progress was satisfactory. Conclusions: Diagnostic imaging techniques are a valuable tool in our field, allowing us to identify vertebral osteochondromas, correlating them with the clinical presentation, and providing appropriate patient management, as was the case in this case
Stem cells, regenerating medical therapeutics
Introduction: Regenerative medicine aims to stimulate or regenerate cells, tissues, or organs to restore or establish normal function. Among its approaches, stem cell therapy has undoubtedly made the most progress. Its use constitutes a novel therapeutic alternative for diseases treated by diverse medical specialties, not least the recent COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.Objective: To describe the application of stem cell therapy in different medical specialties and in the treatment and rehabilitation of COVID-19-positive patients.Method: A literature review was conducted, consulting original articles, case reports, and open-access systematic reviews in peer-reviewed academic publications from the last 5 years. The databases of ScieELO, Regmed, Dialnet, Mayoclinic, and others were reviewed. Search terms included stem cells, stem cell therapy, applications of stem cell therapy, and their English translations.Development: Stem cell treatment has given rise to what can be classified as regenerative cell therapy and is currently one of the most innovative topics in contemporary medicine. Its applications can be divided into two groups: to regenerate destroyed tissues or as a therapeutic vehicle for genes. These applications are used to treat diseases by different medical specialties.Conclusions: This therapy constitutes an excellent alternative for the treatment and rehabilitation of multiple diseases treated by different medical specialties, including the current COVID-19
Movimientos Mixtos, Protección Internacional y Migraciones: Oportunidades y Desafíos desde la Academia
Introduction: The article attempts to make a contribution to the current discussion on the importance and urgency of the University (and the Academy in a broad sense) assuming a proactive role in the analysis and approach of migratory phenomena (mixed movements) and international protection, and their various dimensions and complexities. It attempts to answer at least the following questions: Why is it important to address the issue of mixed movements from the Academy and its substantive areas such as social action? What would be the contribution in addressing the issue of migration and international protection from the University of Costa Rica as an actor in the generation of knowledge and social transformation? What would be its main opportunities and challenges?
Objective: Analyze the importance of addressing human mobility phenomena from the substantive spheres of the University: teaching, research, and social action.
Method: It is a qualitative research based on data on migrations and mixed movements.
Results: Mixed movements must entail a series of complexities that must be addressed from an intra- and interdisciplinary academic perspective and demand an effective response from public policies from the State.
[Continue reading in article]Introducción: El artículo intenta hacer una contribución a la discusión actual sobre la importancia y urgencia de que la Universidad (y la Academia en sentido amplio), asuman un rol proactivo en el análisis y abordaje de los fenómenos migratorios (movimientos mixtos) y de protección internacional, y sus diversas dimensiones y complejidades. Se intenta responder, al menos, a las siguientes interrogantes: ¿Por qué es importante el abordaje del tema de movimientos mixtos desde la Academia y sus áreas sustantivas como la acción social? ¿Cuál sería la contribución en el abordaje del tema de las migraciones y la protección internacional desde la Universidad de Costa Rica como actor en la generación de conocimientos y transformación social? ¿Cuáles serían sus principales oportunidades y desafíos?
Objetivo: Analizar la importancia de abordar los fenómenos de movilidad humana desde los ámbitos sustantivos de la Universidad. A saber: la docencia, la investigación, y la acción social.
Método: Es una investigación cualitativa que se sustenta en datos sobre migraciones y movimientos mixtos.
Resultados: Los movimientos mixtos deben conllevan una serie de complejidades que deber ser abordados desde la intra e interdisciplinariedad académica y demandan una respuesta efectiva de las políticas públicas desde el Estado.

Experiencias de vida en el asentamiento informal Martina Bustos de Liberia, Guanacaste (1940-2020)
Introduction: This article examines the life experiences of the inhabitants of the informal settlement of Martina Bustos in Liberia, Guanacaste. It explores their childhood, family background, and current circumstances in terms of education, employment, and economy, as well as their daily dynamics in a community with limited access to basic services.
Objective: To highlight the communal and personal experiences of the inhabitants of the Martina Bustos informal settlement, considering social and structural conditions regarding basic rights from 1940 to 2020.
Method and technique: Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with five men and seven women aged 26 to 83. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed for content. Confidentiality and anonymity were ensured through signed agreements detailing the study’s objectives and participants' rights.
Results: Residents of the Martina Bustos informal settlement face challenges stemming from impoverished backgrounds, reflected in limited education, economic instability, and restricted access to basic services. Community organizations play a crucial role in mitigating these inequalities.Introducción: Este artículo analiza las experiencias de vida de las personas habitantes del asentamiento informal de Martina Bustos, en Liberia, Guanacaste. Se investigan su infancia, contexto familiar y situación actual en términos de educación, empleo y economía, así como las dinámicas diarias en una comunidad con acceso limitado a servicios básicos.
Objetivo: Visibilizar las vivencias comunitarias y personales de quienes residen en el asentamiento informal de Martina Bustos, considerando las condiciones sociales y estructurales en torno a derechos básicos entre 1940 y 2020.
Metodología y técnica: Se aplicaron 12 entrevistas semiestructuradas con cinco hombres y siete mujeres, cuyas edades oscilan entre 26 y 83 años. Las entrevistas fueron grabadas, transcritas literalmente y sometidas a análisis de contenido. Para proteger a las personas participantes, se garantizaron la confidencialidad y el anonimato mediante acuerdos firmados que explicaban los objetivos del estudio y sus derechos.
Resultados: Las personas habitantes del asentamiento provienen de entornos marcados por la pobreza, lo que se refleja en su situación actual respecto a educación, economía y acceso a servicios básicos. Las organizaciones comunitarias emergen como actores fundamentales para mitigar estas desigualdades
