Metaphorical perceptions of dental students toward dental education: a cross-sectional study from Türkiye

    No full text
Background Understanding the complex, multifaceted, and often subconscious emotional and cognitive perspectives of undergraduate dental students regarding their education is crucial. Personality types and stress levels are believed to play a significant role in shaping these perceptions. Employing metaphors-using a familiar and concrete concept to explain an unfamiliar or abstract one-is an effective cognitive transfer technique for exploring students' views on dental education. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate dental students' perceptions of their education through metaphor analysis. Additionally, it aims to examine the relationship between students' personality types and stress levels, offering deeper insights into the factors influencing their educational experiences. Methods This cross-sectional study included 1038 undergraduate dental students enrolled in faculties of dentistry at three universities in Turkiye during the 2023-2024 academic year. Data were collected via an electronic survey consisting of four sections. The first section gathered demographic information (gender, age, academic level, and occupational preference). In the second section, participants completed the sentence: Dental education is similar to & mldr; because & mldr; to illustrate their mental representations of dental education. The third section included the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to assess stress levels, while the fourth section comprised a personality inventory to determine personality types. All survey data were transferred to Excel for analysis. Metaphors were systematically evaluated, and the most representative ones were identified. Data analysis incorporated both qualitative (metaphor analysis and chi-square tests) and quantitative (linear regression) methods. Results Metaphors were categorized into seven conceptual groups: 'master-apprentice training', 'challenging process-race', 'art-skill-creativity', 'patience-labor', 'union of differences', 'discipline-order-power', and 'unknowability-incomprehensibility-indispensability'. A significant gender difference was observed (p = 0.013): female students predominantly used metaphors in the 'patience-labor' category, while male students favored the 'art-skill-creativity' category. Academic year differences were also significant (p < 0.001), with advanced students more frequently using 'discipline-order-power' metaphors. Stress levels did not significantly differ among groups (p = 0.127), with 72.1% of participants reporting moderate stress, most commonly linked to the 'challenging process-race' category. The majority of participants (64.5%) exhibited a Type B personality. A statistically significant regression model was found between PSS scores and both age (p < 0.001) and personality type scores (p = 0.011). Conclusion This study highlights the influence of personality types and stress levels on dental students' perceptions of their education. Metaphor analysis proved to be an effective tool for identifying these perceptions. The most frequently reported category was 'challenging process-race'. A significant association was found between students' metaphorical categories and their gender and academic level. However, no significant relationships were observed between metaphor categories and occupational preference, stress levels, and personality types

T & uuml;rkiye has a unique position globally as it connects the Asian and European continents. In this study, the genetic diversity of a total of 27 mulberry (Morus alba) genotypes collected from northeastern T & uuml;rkiye was evaluated in terms of morphological, biochemical, and molecular characteristics. In the fruits of the mulberry genotypes, the fruit weight (FW) ranged from 2.00 to 5.13 g, fruit width (Fw) ranged from 12.64 to 16.93 mm, and fruit length (FL) ranged from 20.89 to 32.34 mm. Total soluble solids (TSS) ranged from 16.56% to 26.00%, fruit pH ranged from 3.87 to 5.10, total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 72.69 to 171.34 mg GAE/100 g, total flavonoid content (TFC) ranged from 75.55 to 86.85 mg QE 100/g, and antioxidant activity (AA) ranged from 42.35% to 74.93%. According to principal component analysis (PCA), the first three principal components (eigenvalue >= 1.00) explain 54.05% of the total variation. In general, the fruit and leaf characteristics were more effective in the first two principal components, while the biochemical traits were more effective in the third principal component. As a result of molecular analysis using 13 inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) primers, 94.23% of the total of 76 bands was polymorphic. Molecular variance analysis (AMOVA) showed that within the population, genetic variation was 79%, and among the populations, the variation was 21%. The similarities of the genotypes in the UPGMA dendrogram created according to the results of the molecular analysis varied between 0.74 and 0.98, and the genotypes were divided into two main groups. This study guides breeders in future studies by evaluating mulberry genotypes from morphological, biochemical, and molecular perspectives and explaining the wide variation among genotypes

OBJECTIVE: While transradial access (TRA) coronary angiography (CAG) is recommended, radial artery stenosis (RAS) remains a significant issue in these patients. In patients with RAS, the reuse of the radial artery for CAG, as a coronary artery bypass graft, or as a conduit for hemodialysis fistula formation can pose a serious problem. The De Ritis score is defined as the ratio between the levels of aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) in the serum. Our study aimed to assess the relationship between RAS and the De Ritis score. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included a total of 96 patients who underwent elective CAG via the radial artery route in our hospital's catheter laboratory and were subsequently placed under medical follow-up. RESULTS: In our study, the De Ritis score was significantly higher in RAS+ patients than in the RAS- patient group (1.72 vs. 1.10; p=0.006). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the De Ritis score was an independent predictor of RAS (p=0.037). The De Ritis ratio predicted significant RAS with a cut-off point of 1.35, achieving a sensitivity of 70% and a specificity of 79% (AUC: 0.787, 95% CI: 0.643-0.932, p: 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our study identified that an elevated De Ritis score is an independent indicator of RAS.AMAÇ: Transradial erişim (TRA) ile koroner anjiyografi (KAG) yapılması önerilse de, radial arter stenozu (RAS) bu hastalarda önemli bir sorun olarak kalmaktadır.

The emergence and dissemination of tigecyline resistant Enterobacterales (TRE) in animals is a critical issue. This study aimed to investigate the presence of TRE in the gut of healthy avians as well as meat samples. A total of 940 ceacal samples from 94 commercial poultry flocks were collected at slaughter and a total of 335 meat samples [(chicken (n = 159), turkey (n = 4) and beef/lamb (n = 172)] were collected from supermarkets and butcher shops. Out of 960 samples, 146 (19.21 %) samples from chicken farms and 24 (13.3 %) from turkey farms were positive for TRE. Forty-nine Escherichia coli isolates were determined to carry the tet (X4) gene by PCR and exhibited multi-drug resistance. Whole-genome short-read sequencing (WGS) on all tet (X4) positive E. coli isolates and long-read sequencing on a selection of five isolates were carried out. WGS identified four ST types (ST206 being the most dominant, ST609, ST744 and ST189), indicating significant homogeneity among tigecyline resistant E. coli strains. In 47 isolates, the tet (X4) gene was transferrable to E. coli EC600 and it was found to be located on the IncX1 plasmid. Additionally, all tet (X4)-positive E. coli isolates also harbored other resistance genes, including floR, aadA2 and tet (A). In this study, the identification of tet (X4) carrying E. coli in healthy chicken and meats suggests the likely source of food-producing animals for humans. Therefore, active surveillance of critical priority lineages of TRE should focus on to contain the potential public health risk.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) [121N855]; Na-tional Natural Science Foundation of China [32161133005]; Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions (PAPD); Outstanding Youth Foundation of Jiangsu Province of China [BK20231524]The present work was supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK, Project No: 121N855) , the Na-tional Natural Science Foundation of China (no. 32161133005) , the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions (PAPD) and the Outstanding Youth Foundation of Jiangsu Province of China (BK20231524)

The compound trisodium nickel triphosphate, Na3NiP3O10.12H2O, reported by Azzaoui et al., was successfully resynthesized and recharacterized in this study using the wet chemistry method. Its crystal structure was confirmed through infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Thermal stability was assessed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The SEM image shows and confirms the micropores and a rough surface and then BET analysis reveals a high surface area of 13.7040 m2/g and significant microporosity. The optimal molecular geometry and infrared intensity were calculated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) with the B3LYP functional and LanL2DZ basis set. The compound was tested as an adsorbent for methylene blue dye in aqueous solution. Adsorption studies showed that Na3NiP3O10.12H2O gave a 93.75% removal efficiency confirming its effectiveness as an adsorbent. The adsorption kinetics were best described by a pseudo-second-order model, exhibiting a higher correlation coefficient compared to the pseudo- first-order model. Equilibrium adsorption data fit well with the Langmuir isotherm, indicating monolayer adsorption behavior. Additionally, DFT calculations were performed to investigate the interactions governing the adsorption process on trisodium nickel triphosphate. The electronic density of states and the electronic band structure of the optimized compound were also analyzed to provide further insights into its adsorption mechanism. Hirshfeld surfaces (HS) and their corresponding two-dimensional fingerprint plots were employed to analyze and quantify the percentage contributions of various intermolecular interactions within the crystal packing

    No full text
Amaç: Pentilentetrazol (PTZ), GABA ve diğer inhibitör nörotransmitterlerin etkisini azaltarak nöronların depolarizasyonunu kolaylaştırmaktadır. Tofacitinib romatoid artrit tedavisinde kulllanılan bir JAK-STAT yolağı inhibitörüdür. Tofacitinib'in nörolojik hastalıklarda olumlu etkileri bildirilmesine karşın pentilentetrazol toksititesi modelinde etkileri ile ilgili çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Bu çalışmada HT-22 fare hipokampal nöronal hücre hattında oluşturulan PTZ toksisitesi modelinde Tofocitinib'in etkisinin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Bulgular: HT-22 hücrelerine 60 mM PTZ uygulanması kontrolle kıyaslandığında canlı hücre sayısını azaltırken TOS, NO, nNOS seviyelerini, apoptotik hücre sayısını anlamlı ölçüde artırmıştır (p<0,05). 5 nM Tofacitinib sonrası PTZ uygulanması tek başına PTZ'ye maruz kalan hücrelerle kıyaslandığında canlı hücre sayısını artırmış; TOS, NO, nNOS seviyelerini, apoptotik hücre sayısını anlamlı ölçüde azaltmıştır (p<0,05). Aim: Pentylentetrazole (PTZ) facilitates the depolarization of neurons by reducing the effect of GABA and other inhibitory neurotransmitters. Tofacitinib is a JAK-STAT pathway inhibitor used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Although the positive effects of Tofacitinib in neurological diseases have been reported, there is no study on its effects in the pentylentetrazole toxicity model. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of Tofocitinib in the PTZ toxicity model created in the HT-22 mouse hippocampal neuronal cell line. Material and Method: In the study, to evaluate the effect of Tofacitinib on cell death, cells were divided into four groups. No treatment was applied to the control group, PTZ 60 mM was applied to the PTZ group, Tofacitinib group was applied to the cells at different concentrations (5; 2.5; 1 and 0.5 nM) and Tofacitinib + PTZ group was applied to the cells at different concentrations (5; 2.5; 1 and 0.5 nM). After 1 hour, 60 mM PTZ was added. XTT test was then used for cell viability. NO and nNOS measurements were performed by ELISA method. Apoptosis assessment was evaluated by split caspase-3 staining method. Total oxidant levels (TOS) and total antioxidant levels (TAS) were measured with commercial kits to demonstrate the antioxidative effect. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used in the statistical analysis of the data. Statistical significance level was accepted as p<0.05. Results: Application of 60 mM PTZ to HT-22 cells decreased the number of viable cells compared to control, while significantly increased TOS, NO, nNOS levels, and the number of apoptotic cells (p<0.05). Application of PTZ after 5 nM Tofacitinib increased the number of viable cells compared to cells exposed to PTZ alone, while significantly decreased TOS, NO, nNOS levels, and the number of apoptotic cells (p<0.05). The administration of 60 mM PTZ according to immunofluorescence staining results significantly increased split caspase-3 protein levels compared to control (p<0.05). However, application of Tofacitinib significantly decreased B-caspase-3 protein levels compared to cells exposed to PTZ alone (p<0.05). Conclusion: PTZ caused significant neuronal damage and oxidative stress in the HT-22 cell line, increasing apoptosis. Tofacitinib showed a protective effect on cell viability by reducing apoptosis and oxidative stress

Machine learning algorithms for predicting the photoionization cross section of CdS/ZnSe core/shell spherical quantum dots surrounded by dielectric matrices

    No full text
In this study, we explore the prediction of the photoionization cross section (PCS) of CdS/ZnSe core/shell spherical quantum dots (CSQD) surrounded by different dielectric matrices. The quantum dot systems, embedded in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and silicon dioxide (SiO2) matrices, were modeled under varying core-shell dimensions and dielectric environments. Our findings show that the resonant peak of the PCS experience a redshift with improvement in their amplitude in the case of the PVA matrix, while in the case of the PVC and SiO2 the magnitude of the PCS is reduced and their resonant peak suffers a blueshift. Three different machine learning algorithms were used to estimate the photoionization cross-section, namely Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Decision Trees (DT), and Random Forest Regressors (RFR). Among these, Random Forest Regression proved to be the most successful algorithm, particularly for the SiO2 matrix, achieving exceptional performance with the coefficient of determination R2 = 0.999 Mean Squared Error MSE=10-4 and the Root Mean Squared Error RMSE=0.0077. While DT exhibited lower MSE, MAE, and RMSE than ANN in the SiO2 matrix, ANN showed potential in capturing more complex nonlinear relationships. These results demonstrate the superior predictive capabilities of RFR and highlight the applicability of machine learning in modeling quantum dot systems. This work offers valuable insights into the optimization of optoelectronic device design through accurate and efficient computational methods. © 2025 The Author(s)Deanship of Scientific Research, King Khalid University, (RGP.2/186/45)Deanship of Scientific Research, King Khalid Universit
