Philip Pullman'ın Golden Compass adlı eserinde büyülü gerçekçilik

    No full text
The Golden Compass yalnızca Pullman'ın anlatım ustalığını göstermekle kalmaz, aynı zamanda modern yazında mümkün olanı yeniden tanımlayarak büyülü gerçekçiliğin yansımalı inceliklerini fantastik türün yaratıcı derinliğiyle birleştirir. The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, is a revolutionary masterpiece that blurs the lines between genres by fusing the philosophical and the fantastical. This thesis places Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass in the context of both literary traditions by examining the complex relationships between magical realism and fantasy. The study starts with an overview of Pullman's life and career, revealing the ways in which his literary and philosophical influences shaped his creative work. It explores the fantasy genre, highlighting its defining traits and contrasting them with those of magical realism, a literary style that was popular in Latin America. Fantasy frequently creates separate universes with unique laws, but magical realism subtly incorporates the fantastic into everyday life, challenging existing perceptions of reality. In contrast to the fantasy genre's focus on building completely different worlds, magical realism, a literary trend that gained popularity in Latin America thanks to writers like Gabriel García Márquez, skilfully incorporates exceptional happenings into everyday situations. By referring to his work as "stark realism," Philip Pullman highlights his dedication to depicting human experiences with solid openness, even in magical situations. Despite its imaginative scope, Pullman crafts a world grounded in themes of moral complexity, existential questioning, and the struggle for autonomy. The thesis looks at how Pullman uses magical realist approaches to explore deep subjects like free choice, knowledge, and spirituality by placing The Golden Compass inside this framework. With its origins in Latin American literature, magical realism adds unusual elements to everyday situations and provides a distinctive perspective on human experience. This strategy is woven throughout Pullman's fantasy universe, where ideas like Dust, daemons, and parallel universes serve as more than just story devices—they are also tools for deep philosophical analysis. The story of the book creates a complex critique of authority, organized religion, and the quest for knowledge by bridging the imaginative realm of fantasy with the reflective ambiguity of magical realism. This study emphasizes The Golden Compass's creative approach to genre hybridity by placing it within the larger frameworks of magical realism and fantasy. It looks at how Pullman challenges conventional narratives and draws readers into deep ethical and metaphysical discussions by fusing literary, theological, and philosophical traditions. Pullman creates a story that crosses genre lines by fusing the conceptual complexity and ambiguity of magical realism with the imaginative scope of fantasy, encouraging readers to consider issues of knowledge, freedom, and human experience. This piece highlights the importance of genre hybridity in modern writing and advances our comprehension of Pullman's literary accomplishments. This thesis asserts that The Golden Compass not only demonstrates Pullman's narrative skill but also reimagines what is possible in modern writing by fusing the reflective nuances of magical realism with the imaginative depth of fantasy

Background/Objectives: The association between past coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) infection and pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) is a potential research topic. We aimed to research the prevalence of previous COVID-19 infection in patients with PTE and to determine whether there is a difference in embolism severity in these cases. Methods: Study design: Multicenter, observational, cross-sectional. Patients diagnosed with PTE between 11 March 2022 and 11 March 2023 were prospectively included in this study, excluding cases with PTE along with active COVID-19, patients under the age of 18, and pregnant patients. Group 1 consisted of PTE cases with previous COVID-19, and Group 2 consisted of PTE cases without previous COVID-19. Key variables are D-Dimer level, right ventricle/left ventricle (RV/LV) ratio, simplified pulmonary embolism severity score, and treatment type. Results: A total of 1185 patients (Group 1; n = 360, Group 2; n = 825) were included in this study. The proportion of patients with RV/LV ratio > 1 on computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) was significantly high in Group 2 compared to Group 1 (27.9% vs. 19.7%, p = 0.003). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the absence of any identifiable risk factor for PTE was found to be a 0.46-fold protective factor in the presence of previous COVID-19 (OR: 0.456 95% CI: 0.274-0.760, Wald = 9.070, df = 1, p = 0.003) and an RV/LV ratio > 1 on CTPA was found to be a 0.60-fold protective factor (OR: 0.603, 95% CI: 0.365-0.998, Wald = 3.874, df = 1, p = 0.049). Conclusions: The prevalence of previous COVID-19 infection in PTE cases was 30.4%, and 26.3% of idiopathic cases had previous COVID-19 infection. Although the parameters related to embolism severity were higher in the non-COVID-19 group, multivariate analyses revealed a 2.2-fold increased risk for idiopathic PTE and a 1.7-fold increased risk for RV/LV ratio > 1 on CTPA in patients without COVID-19 compared to those with prior COVID-19

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a severe complication of cirrhosis, occurring in approximately 15 % of cirrhotic patients. The most common causative pathogens of SBP are Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Although brucellosis can cause various complications, it is a rare cause of peritonitis. Herein, we report a case of a 30-year-old male with chronic hepatitis B who presented with fever, night sweats, weight loss, abdominal pain, and distension. Brucella spp. was isolated from blood and peritoneal fluid cultures. The patient fully recovered following six weeks of treatment with oral doxycycline (100 mg twice daily) and rifampicin (600 mg/day). No relapses or complications were observed during follow-up

Ferrocene derived chalcone compounds were completed at M06-2X/6-31+G(d)(LANL2DZ) level in water phase. Structural properties (geometric structure, bond lengths and angles), spectral electronic properties and nonlinear optical properties (NLO) of the relevant compounds were examined. Geometric parameters of these compounds and their electronic structures were reported. HOMO-LUMO energy gap (6.35-6.77 eV) indicated high stability of the compounds, while MEP maps revealed that carbonyl oxygens have biological interaction potential. IR spectra of ferrocene derived chalcone compounds were calculated in water phase. Absorption bands were observed between 190-285 nm in UV-Vis spectrum. In NLO analysis, FC9 and FC10 compounds were determined to have high second-order polarizability (βtot) values (FC10: 1892.80 a.u.), and FC6 compound had the highest dipole moment (1.98 Debye). Overall, the calculated molecular parameters indicate that ferrocene-derived chalcone compounds have the potential to interact with biological and chemical systems. These findings provide a theoretical basis for further experimental studies and are suggested to be evaluated in pharmaceutical and biotechnological applications.[No abstract available

Aim: The intrauterine device (IUD) is the second most widely used contraceptive method globally due to its effectiveness, affordability, and reliability. There are two primary types: copper and hormonal. However, IUDs are associated with potential complications, including ectopic pregnancy, uterine perforation, and pelvic inflammatory disease. This study aims to assess and compare the safety and complication rates of copper and hormonal IUDs, with a focus on their impact on vaginal microbiota. Material and Methods: The study included 233 women who had their IUDs removed at our clinic. The IUDs were analyzed using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to identify the microbiota present on the devices. Results: Participants' ages ranged from 20 to 70 years, with a mean age of 39.64 +/- 8.37. The majority (84.4%) used copper IUDs, while 15.6% used levonorgestrel-releasing IUDs. Among the patients, 41.2% reported vaginal discharge, 39.5% experienced dyspareunia, and 18.5% had a history of pelvic inflammatory disease or tubo-ovarian abscess. Discussion: IUD use significantly impacts vaginal microbiota, with Escherichia coli being a common pathogen in both copper and hormonal IUD users. Regular gynecological check-ups, sterile insertion practices, and patient education on infection symptoms are crucial for mitigating risks. Probiotics may help maintain microbiota balance during IUD use. Future studies should investigate long-term microbiota changes, compare different IUD types, and explore infection prevention strategies. This research is a vital contribution to understanding the effects of IUDs on vaginal microbiota

The concise synthesis of O-methyl-d-inositol derivative and conduritol derivatives was obtained starting from p-benzoquinone. Spectroscopic methods have been performed for the characterization of newly synthesized compounds. Cyclitols are useful molecules with anticancer, antibiotic, antinutrient, and antileukemic activities. Inositol class molecules, known as the most important cyclitol derivatives, were examined in this study for their 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and nitric oxide radical scavenging and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and glycosidase inhibition activities. It was observed that compound 5, in particular, showed efficacy that competed with the standards in terms of both antioxidant activity and enzyme inhibitor potential. Additionally, compound 5 shows effective antimicrobial activity. The water-soluble characteristics and lipophilic properties of the compounds were also considered and discussed. Moreover, the quantum chemical analyses were performed in light of the DFT/B3LYP/6-311G** level computations to elucidate/compare the studied inositols' possible reactivity directions. Additionally, the interactions of the molecules were analyzed against acetylcholinesterase (AChE), peroxiredoxin 5, and DNA gyrase by molecular docking methods. Cholinesterase inhibitors have an important status as the most important drug group used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease today. Considering the effects of inhibition of the alpha-glucosidase enzyme by inhibitors, such molecules can also be used as therapeutic components in the treatment of diabetes.Ordu University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit [AR-1324]; Ordu University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit (ODU/BAP); Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK)The authors are indebted to Ordu University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit (ODU/BAP, Grant No: AR-1324) for financial support of this study and to the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). Highly Up-Regulation of Fas Ligand Gene Expression after Increasing in Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein

    No full text
Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) shows many harmful effects such as induction of apoptosis on function of endothelial cell (EC). Fas ligand (FASL) induces apoptosis in divergent pathological conditions. EC apoptosis which induced by ox-LDL is related with FASL. In this study, we aimed to determine how different ox-LDL levels affect FASL expression in ECs. We treated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) with two different concentration of ox-LDL. FASL gene expression in groups was detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). We compared FASL gene expression level between the groups according to ∆∆Ct method. FASL gene expression was statistic significantly up-regulated in the group treated higher amounts of ox-LDL (P<0.001). We found that treatment with higher amounts of ox-LDL in HUVECs increased FASL gene expression dramatically. According to our findings, we concluded that increasing the amount of ox-LDL may be critical in inducing the FASL-dependent apoptotic pathway in ECs

    No full text
The study presents the development of a new pentafunctional epoxy resin, pentaglycidylthiosemicarbazide (PGTSC), synthesised through a simple condensation process. The molecular structure of PGTSC was characterised using FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Viscosity measurements indicated that PGTSC's viscosity is significantly influenced by solution concentration and temperature, demonstrating its improved inhibition performance. Electrochemical tests showed that PGTSC achieves a maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency of 92% at a concentration of 10-3 M, with a notable reduction in corrosion current density from 608.60 mu A/cm(2) to 36.67 mu A/cm(2) in 1.0 M HCl. The polarisation studies revealed a mixed-type inhibition mechanism affecting both anodic and cathodic reactions, and the polarisation resistance increased, enhancing the protective properties of steel. The findings were corroborated by additional studies, including PDP, EIS, SEM observations, and computational DFT, MD, and MC calculations support the experimental findings and were in good agreement.Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE); Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP) [RS-2024-00449107]; Materials and Components Technology Development Program of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE); Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT) [20022511]This research was conducted with the support of the 'Core-Technology Development Project for New and Renewable Energy' by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP) [grant number RS-2024-00449107].
