Designing disposable hand-made screen-printed electrode using conductive ink for electrochemical determination of dopamine
In this work, we detailed the improvement of a hand-made screen-printed electrode (SPE), which has easy production with conductive ink. The preparation of the hand-made SPE based on conductive ink to be transferred to cardboard substrates as electrochemical sensors. Thanks to its advantages such as being cheap and easy to obtain, cardboard was preferred as a substrate. As a new approach, we report for the first time in the literature the alkaline pretreatment applied for the cardboard substrate. The conductive ink was used as a working electrode, a counter electrode, and a reference electrode. The components of the developed conductive ink are carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as binder, water:ethanol:ethylene glycol as solvent and graphite as conductive material. The SPE was characterized by Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The developed electrode was used in the voltammetric determination of dopamine, an important neurotransmitter for human health. The device achieved a linear response between 5.0 and 1000 mu M and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.25 mu M. Thus, these developed hand-made SPE was used in the determination of dopamine in a selective, fast, and cost-effective way. Highly dispersive optical solitons in the absence of self-phase modulation by lie symmetry
Abstract The paper revisits highly dispersive optical solitons that are addressed by the aid of Lie symmetry followed by the implementation of the Riccati equation approach and the improved modified extended tanh-function approach. Can the Position of the Impacted Third Molars Be an Early Risk Indicator of Pathological Conditions? A Retrospective Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study
Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the prevalence of pathologies associated with impacted third molars in relation to tooth position on cone-beam computed tomography images.Material and Methods: In 348 cone-beam computed tomography images, the position of 640 impacted third molars (mesiodistal angulation, buccolingual inclination, impaction depth, and contact point localization) and the presence of pathologies (distal caries, external root resorption, marginal bone loss, and pathological follicular space) were evaluated. The data were analysed statistically with a significance level set at P < 0.05.Results: Distal caries was mostly detected in relation to Class A (20.4%) and contact point at (12.5%) and above (10.5%) the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) (P = 0.000; P < 0.05). External root resorption and marginal bone loss were more common in mesioangular angulation (52.3% and 80.1%, respectively), Class C (53% and 73.8%, respectively), and contact point below the CEJ (53.2% and 73.3%, respectively) (P = 0.000; P < 0.05). Lingual inclination was identified as a new risk factor for associated pathologies (P < 0.05). Pathological follicular space was significantly more likely to occur in those with inverted angulation (100%) and absence of contact (31.5%) (P = 0.000 and P = 0.010, respectively; P < 0.05).Conclusions: Pathologies arising in second molars in relation to impacted third molars are significantly associated with the three-dimensional position of impacted third molars, and watchful monitoring or prophylactic removal of impacted third molars should be considered, taking into account the relevant risk parameters for the related pathologies
Wnt1 and β-catenin expression in lobular capillary hemangioma: immunohistochemical study
Abstract:
Introduction: Lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) is a vascular neoplasia with a pathogenesis that has not been fully clarified. The
Wnt signaling pathway plays an essential role in vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. The increased activity in the Wnt signaling pathway
may cause some neoplastic proliferations. This study revealed the role of the Wnt1/β-catenin signaling pathway in the development
of LCH.
Methods: The study included 30 LCH tissue samples. Vascular structures in healthy tissue surrounding LCH lesions were used as
controls. Wnt1 and β-catenin protein expressions in tumor tissue and surrounding tissue vascular structures were evaluated using
the immunohistochemical method.
Results: Wnt1 expression was 1.10±0.16 and 0.33±0.10 in the LCH and control groups, respectively, indicating a statistically significant
difference (p<0.001). β-catenin expression was 1.57±0.39 and 0.59±0.18 in the LCH and control groups, which was also statistically
significant (p0.05).
Conclusion: In LCH, the Wnt1/β-catenin signaling pathway expression is increased. This increase may be due to the increased Wnt1
gene expression, pathologies in different signaling pathways, or paracrine factors secreted from the tumor microenvironment.
Treatment modalities targeting the Wnt1 signaling pathway may be promising for treating LCH
Trueness and precision of mandibular complete-arch implant scans when different data acquisition methods are used
ABSTRACT
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of different data acquisition methods on the trueness and precision of
mandibular complete-arch implant scans.
Methods: An edentulous polyurethane master mandibular model with 6 implants was digitized by using an
industrial-grade blue light scanner (ATOS Core 80 5MP) to obtain a master standard tessellation language
(MSTL) file. The master model was also digitized by using either direct digital workflow with a stereoscopic
camera (iCam 4D (IM)) or intraoral scanners (CEREC Primescan (PS) and Trios 4 (T4)) or indirect digital
workflow with laboratory scanners (inEos X5 (X5) and CARES 7 (S7)) to obtain test-scan STLs (n = 10). All STL
files were imported into a metrology-grade analysis software (Geomagic Control X 2020.1) and test-scan STLs
were superimposed over MSTL. The root mean square method was used to calculate surface deviations, while
angular deviations were also calculated. Kruskal–Wallis and Dunn’s tests were used to evaluate measured deviations (surface and angular) for trueness and precision (α = 0.05).
Results: X5 and S7 had the lowest, and IM had the highest surface deviations (P ≤ .036). The angular deviations of
PS were lower than those of X5, S7, and IM (P ≤ .008). When surface deviations were considered, T4 had the
lowest precision among tested scanners (P ≤ .002), and the scans of IM had higher precision than those of PS (P
= .003). Scanner type did not affect the precision of the scans when angular deviations were considered (P =
.084).
Conclusions: The data acquisition method affected the trueness (surface and angular deviations) and precision
(surface deviations) of mandibular complete-arch implant scans.
Clinical significance: Tested data acquisition methods may be feasible to digitize mandibular complete-arch implants considering the deviations of the scans, which were in the range of previously reported thresholds, and the
high precision of scans. However, the frameworks fabricated with the direct digital workflow that involves the
scans of the stereoscopic camera might require more adjustments than those fabricated by using the scans of
other tested scanners
Biomechanical effects of inclined implant shoulder design in all-on-four treatment concept: a three-dimensional finite element analysis Taha Aktas and Nurettin Diker ORCID logo
Abstract
Objectives: The aim of the present study was to assess the biomechanical behaviour of using a posterior implant design with inclined shoulder designs in all-on-four treatment via three-dimensional finite element analysis.Methods: Implants with standard and inclined shoulder designs were modelled for posterior implants. Implants were positioned into the maxilla and mandible models according to the all-on-four concept. Compressive stresses in the peri-implant bone, the von Mises stresses in the different components of the prosthetic restoration, and movement of the prosthesis were obtained.Results: The compressive stresses of the models with inclined shoulder design resulted in 15-58 % decrease compared with standard shoulder design. The von Mises stresses in the posterior implants reduced 18-47 %, stresses in the implant body increased 38-78 %, stresses in the abutment screw reduced 20-65 %, stresses in the framework of prosthesis reduced 1-18 % and deformation of the prosthesis was reduced 6-37 % in the models of inclined shoulder design compared with models of standard shoulder design. The compressive and von Mises stresses were generally higher in the mandible models than in the maxilla models for standard and inclined shoulder designs.Conclusions: All evaluated components of the simulated treatment except for posterior abutment bodies showed better biomechanical behaviour with inclined shoulder design. The clinical success of all-on-four treatment maybe enhanced by using posterior implants with an inclined shoulder design
Investigation of the relationships between sensory processing disorders, daily living skills and activity participation in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder with repetitive behavior
ÖZET
Çalışmamızda, tekrarlayıcı davranışı olan otizm spektrum bozukluğu tanılı çocuklarda
duyusal işlem bozuklukları, günlük yaşam becerileri ve aktivite katılımı arasındaki
ilişkilerin incelenmesini amaçlamaktadır. Bu çalışma, tekrarlayıcı davranış ile
bedensel motor planlama, günlük yaşam becerileri ve modülasyonla ilgili duyusal
işlem problemleri arasındaki ilişkiyi inceleyen bir çalışmanın eksikliğinden
kaynaklanmaktadır Araştırmamızın örneklemi, İstanbul'da ikamet eden 4-7 yaş arası
otizm spektrum bozukluğu tanısı almış 62 çocuktan oluşmaktadır. Çocukların otizm
spektrum bozukluğu tanıları, DSM-V kriterlerine uygun olarak bir Çocuk ve Ergen
Psikiyatristi tarafından konulmuştur. Veri toplama araçları olarak Dunn Duyu Profili
(DP), SCOPE, Tekrarlayıcı Davranış Ölçeği (TEDÖ-R-TV), Pediatrik Özürlülük
Değerlendirme Envanteri (PÖDE), Gelişimsel Anamnez, SIPT Kinestezi Testi ve
Postüral Hareketin Klinik Gözlemi kullanılmıştır. Verilerin istatistiksel
değerlendirmesi için Pearson korelasyon analizi kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca, otizmli
çocukların SPIT puanları ile normal gelişim gösteren çocukların SPIT puanları
arasındaki farkın anlamlılığını değerlendirmek için Mann-Whitney U testi
kullanılmıştır. Bulgular, OSB'li çocuklarda düşük enstansor kas kontrolü ile duysal
işlemin davranışsal sonuçları arasında negatif ve anlamlı bir ilişki olmadığını
göstermiştir. Araştırma ayrıca OSB'li çocukların duysal işlemleme becerilerinin
günlük yaşam becerileri ve aktivite katılımlarını etkilediğini göstermiştir.
Araştırmanın sonuçları; ‘’Otizm spektrum bozukluğu olan çocuklarda duysal işlem
bozuklukları ve günlük yaşam becerileri arasında anlamlı ilişkiler bulunmuştur.
Duyusal işleme bozuklukları olan çocukların günlük yaşam becerilerinde zorluk
yaşadığı gözlenmiştir.’’ ‘’Otizmli çocuklar arasında streotopik davranışlar, kendine
zarar verme davranışları ve sınırlı davranışlar gözlenmiştir. Bu davranışların otizmli
çocukların günlük yaşam becerilerini ve işlevselliğini olumsuz yönde etkilediği
görülmüştür.’’ ’’ Motor becerilerin duysal işleme becerileri, hareket düzenlemeleri ve
görsel girdilerin düzenlenmesiyle ilişkili olduğu bulunmuştur. Otizmli çocuklarda

Our study aims to investigate the relationships between sensory processing disorders,
daily living skills, and activity participation in children diagnosed with Autism
Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who exhibit repetitive behaviors. This study addresses a gap
in the literature concerning the link between repetitive behavior and sensory
processing issues related to motor planning, daily living skills, and modulation. The
sample of our research consists of 62 children, aged 4 to 7 years, diagnosed with ASD
and residing in Istanbul. The diagnosis of ASD in these children was made by a Child
and Adolescent Psychiatrist in accordance with DSM-V criteria. Data collection tools
included the Dunn Sensory Profile (DP), SCOPE, Repetitive Behavior Scale (TEDÖR-TV), Pediatric Disability Assessment Inventory (PÖDE), Developmental
Anamnesis, SIPT Kinesthesia Test, and Clinical Observation of Postural Movement.
Statistical evaluation of the data employed Pearson correlation analysis. Additionally,
the Mann-Whitney U test was utilized to assess the significance of differences in SPIT
scores between autistic children and typically developing children. The findings
revealed no significant negative relationship between repetitive behaviors and the
behavioral outcomes of sensory processing associated with reduced extensor muscle
control in children with ASD. Moreover, the study illustrated that sensory processing
skills impact daily living skills and activity participation in ASD children. The
outcomes of the research can be summarized under the following headings:
‘’Significant associations were identified between sensory processing disorders and
daily living skills in children with ASD, indicating challenges in daily living skills for
those with sensory processing issues.’’ ‘’Among autistic children, stereotypic
behaviors, self-injurious behaviors, and restricted behaviors were observed. These
behaviors negatively influenced the daily living skills and functionality of autistic
children.’’ ‘’Motor skills were found to be associated with sensory processing abilities,
movement regulation, and the organization of visual inputs. Motor skill levels could
affect sensory processing abilities in autistic children.’
Evaluation of bone marrow functions and new inflammatory markers in patients with immunocompetent herpes zoster
Background and Design: Herpes zoster (HZ) is a viral infection characterized by dermatomal vesicles caused by the reactivation of the latent
varicella-zoster virus (VZV). There are conflicting reports regarding the effects of VZV on bone marrow functions. In this study, we aimed to
evaluate bone marrow function and systemic inflammation in immunocompetent HZ patients.
Materials and Methods: This study included patients aged ≥18 yr diagnosed with HZ and admitted to a dermatology outpatient clinic
between June 2011 and June 2021. Hematological parameters in routine hemogram tests of patients with HZ and new inflammatory markers,
such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune inflammation index, and platelet-neutrophil
ratio (PNR), were determined and compared with healthy control groups.
Results: Thrombocytopenia was observed in 6.1% and lymphopenia in 8% of 461 HZ patients. The mean leukocyte (white blood cell),
lymphocyte, neutrophil, eosinophil, and platelet (PLT) counts in HZ patients were statistically significantly lower than in the control group
(p<0.05). NLR and PLR values were statistically significantly higher in HZ patients than in the control group (p<0.05). PLT, eosinophil count, and
PNR values were statistically lower in HZ patients aged ≥65 yr than in patients aged <65 yr, whereas mean platelet volume and NLR values
were higher (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Thrombocytopenia and lymphopenia may occur in immunocompetent HZ patients. NLR and PLR values increase in HZ patients.
The increase in inflammatory markers and decrease in platelet count are more evident in HZ patients aged ≥65 yr
Physical activity and dietary habits in patients with asthma: How is it related to asthma control?
Abstract
Aims: In this study, we aimed to determine the PA and dietary habits of patients with asthma and whether asthma control had a role in these habits. Methods: Adult patients with asthma were included. Three questionnaires were administered to the patients. and daily step counts were recorded for one week. Asthma control level and severe asthma attacks in the previous year were assessed. Results: A total of 277 patients were included. One hundred eighty-two (65.3%) of the patients were overweight/obese. According to FFQ, none of the food groups were comsumed in recommended levels. According to the IPAQ scores, 82.7% of the patients had mild physical activity. The daily step counts and the PA domain of the HLBS-II in obese patients were lower than the nonobese patients (p = 0.001 and p = 0.034,respectively). The rate of obese patients (n = 9; 50%) was higher in the uncontrolled patients. Conclusion: In our study, the majority of patients were physically inactive. Few patients consumed the recommended amount of foods. Being overweight seems to be a significant barrier to the healthy life behaviors. Although these behaviours do not seem to have an effect on asthma controlling this study, further prospective placebo-controlled studies are needed
Evaluation of acute organ toxicity, biochemical and metabolic changes in pediatric oncology patients
Abstract
Introduction: Organ toxicity is common in childhood cancers and can cause
delays in chemotherapy and worsening of prognosis. In this study, we aimed to
evaluate organ toxicities, biochemical and metabolic abnormalities associated with
the tumor and/or chemotherapy in the acute phase of treatment in children with
cancer.
Materials and Methods: The data of 305 patients with lymphoma and solid
tumors who received chemotherapy between 01.01.2010 and 31.12.2015 in
a tertiary healthcare facility were retrospectively evaluated. The effects of age,
gender, cancer stage, chemotherapy group, surgery and radiotherapy on organ
toxicity in the first 30 days of treatment were analyzed.
Results: The mean age of the patients at admission was 97 months, and the male/
female ratio was 1.5. The most common diagnoses were lymphomas (27.6%),
CNS and spinal canal tumors (12.5%) and neuroblastoma (11.8%). Chemotherapy
was applied to all the patients, surgery to 61.3% (n=187), and radiotherapy to
13.1% (n=40). Organ toxicity was detected in 59% (n=180) of the patients. The
use of alkylating agents, antimetabolites, plant products, and no surgery were
risk factors for hepatotoxicity (p<0.05). The only risk factor for nephrotoxicity
was antimetabolite drug use (p<0.05). The most common electrolyte disorder
was hyponatremia, observed in 56.7% (n=173) of the patients. Two patients died
during the study period, which were not due to organ toxicity, metabolic disease,
or electrolyte disturbance.
Conclusion: The rate of organ toxicity as well as biochemical, electrolyte, and
metabolic abnormalities were found to be high. These high rates were thought to
be related to the excessive tumor burden and organ involvement and the intensity
of the combined chemotherapies applied. No associated mortality was observed
despite these high rates. Early detection of these pathologies, close follow-up
and immediate treatment with the multidisciplinary approach to treatment were
described as the reason for the absence of mortality
