    Long-term effect of nanosized boric acid powder on optical properties of polymer ınfiltrated ceramic CAD-CAM material

    Abstract The current study investigated the effect of boric acid (H3BO3) nanosized powder on the optical properties of a Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD-CAM) polymer infiltrated ceramic material. Specimens (n = 60), (15 × 8 × 1.5 mm3) were fabricated from a polymer infiltrated ceramic network (PINC) (Vita Enamic, Vita Zahnfabrik, VITA-shade scale A2). Boric acid (B) nano powder was applied to Vita Enamic in half of the specimens (n = 30), while the other half was left untreated (NB) (n = 30). Aging for all specimens was performed for 5 h at 134 °C. Color coordinates (L*, a*, and b*) before and after aging were measured to calculate the color change (ΔE00) and the translucency parameter (TP) within and between the B and NB groups. One-way ANOVA was used to analyze the effect of boric acid on all color parameters (α = 0.05). Only L* increased in B after aging (p < 0.001). L* and b* significantly changed after aging in NB (p < 0.001). Boric acid application affected the color change within the ceramic after aging (p < 0.001). The mean color change (ΔE00) in B after aging was significantly smaller than the color change in NB after aging (p < 0.001). The color difference between B and NB increased after aging (p < 0.001). No significant effect of aging was found on TP of B (p = 0.143). The TP of NB significantly decreased after aging (p < 0.001).     Abstract The present study reports quiescent optical solitons for Kudryashov's proposed form of self-phase modulation with quintuple nonlinearity having two power-law parameters. The solitons were retrieved with the usage of enhanced Kudryashov's algorithm. The stationary singular, dark and bright solitons emerged from the scheme together with parametric restrictions.     Emotional intelligence and perfectionism among gifted and non-identified students

    Abstract The current study comparatively examines the emotional intelligence and perfectionism of gifted and non-identified students. A total of 857 students participated in the study. Data were collected through the Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale, which measures students' perfectionism levels and the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory Youth Version EQ-i:YV, which measures students' emotional intelligence. Our findings indicate that gifted students' scores in the intrapersonal and adaptability subdimensions of emotional intelligence and their overall scores in emotional intelligence are higher than those of non-identified students; while non-identified students' average score of positive perfectionism is higher than that of the gifted students. Additionally, we found a negative correlation between positive impression and negative perfectionism in the non-identified group, while the correlation between these variables was positive amongst the gifted participants. Our findings may help design successful educational and guidance programmes for the gifted and their non-identified peers and in-service programmes for their teachers and counsellors

    Functional connectivity patterns in parosmia

    Abstract Objective Parosmia is a qualitative olfactory dysfunction presenting as“distorted odor perception” in presence of an odor source. Aim of this study was to use resting state functional connectivity to gain more information on the alteration of olfactory processing at the level of the central nervous system level. Methods A cross sectional study was performed in 145 patients with parosmia (age range 20–76 years; 90 women). Presence and degree of parosmia was diagnosed on the basis of standardized questionnaires. Participants also received olfactory testing using the “Snifn’ Sticks”. Then they underwent resting state scans using a 3 T magnetic resonance imaging scanner while fxating on a cross. Results Whole brain analyses revealed reduced functional connectivity in salience as well as executive control networks. Region of interest-based analyses also supported reduced functional connectivity measures between primary and secondary olfactory eloquent areas (temporal pole, supramarginal gyrus and right orbitofrontal cortex; dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex and the right piriform cortex). Conclusions Participants with parosmia exhibited a reduced information fow between memory, decision making centers, and primary and secondary olfactory areas.     On soliton solutions for higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with cubic-quintic-septic law

    The topic of dispersive optical solitons is one of the essential areas of telecommunications engineering. This paper presents the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) with the cubic-quintic-septic (CQS) law which includes higher-order dispersion terms. This equation examines the dynamics of dispersive optical solitons propagation in nonlinear optical fibers. The presented model is significant in mathematics and theoretical physics sciences because long-distance optical fibers are used in optical communication utilized for transoceanic and intercontinental data transmission. First, the considered equation is transformed into a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (NLODE) using the traveling wave transformation. Then, two powerful techniques, Sinh-Gordon expansion approach and the auxiliary equation method (AEM), based on the homogeneous balance rule, are operated to produce analytical solutions for the NLSE with CQS law. Thus, bright, dark, singular, and periodic-singular soliton solutions are acquired. We demonstrate the three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) representations to interpret the physical behavior of some derived solutions. Besides, we investigate the effects of some parameters in the model with graphical illustrations.     The role of chromatin-modifying enzymes and histone modifications in the modulation of p16 gene in fumonisin B-1-induced toxicity in human kidney cells

    Abstract Fumonisin B-1 (FB1) poses a risk to animal and human health. Although the effects of FB1 on sphingolipid metabolism are well documented, there are limited studies covering the epigenetic modifications and early molecular alterations associated with carcinogenesis pathways caused by FB1 nephrotoxicity. The present study investigates the effects of FB1 on global DNA methylation, chromatin-modifying enzymes, and histone modification levels of the p16 gene in human kidney cells (HK-2) after 24 h exposure. An increase (2.23-fold) in the levels of 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) at 100 mu mol/L was observed, a change independent from the decrease in gene expression levels of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) at 50 and 100 mu mol/L; however, DNMT3a and DNMT3b were significantly upregulated at 100 mu mol/L of FB1. Dose-dependent downregulation of chromatin-modifying genes was observed after FB1 exposure. In addition, chromatin immunoprecipitation results showed that 10 mu mol/L of FB1 induced a significant decrease in H3K9ac, H3K9me3 and H3K27me3 modifications of p16, while 100 mu mol/L of FB1 caused a significant increase in H3K27me3 levels of p16. Taken together, the results suggest that epigenetic mechanisms might play a role in FB1 carcinogenesis through DNA methylation, and histone and chromatin modifications

    Propagation of M‑truncated optical pulses in nonlinear optics

    This article discusses the Hamiltonian amplitude equation with the properties of truncated M-fractional derivative. The proposed equation governs certain instabilities of modulated wave trains. The optical pulses in diferent forms like, bright, dark, singular, combined and complex solitons are extracted by using the modifed Sardar sub-equation method, a relatively new integration tool. Moreover, hyperbolic, exponential, and periodic solutions are guaranteed. The applied technique provides earlier extracted results and also reveals new solutions as well as useful for explaining nonlinear partial diferential equations. Three dimensional, two dimensional, contour, and density profles are plotted with the correct parameter values, and communicate about the physical representation of some solutions. Our extracted results are found to be novel in the study as they are compared to previously published research. This study will be valuable to a variety of engineers who specialise in engineering models. In our opinion, the results demonstrate that the computational method utilised is efective, straightforward, and applicable even to complicated systems

    Variations and thicknesses of anterior belly of the digastric muscle: An ultrasonographic study

    Abstract Purpose This study aims to evaluate the anatomy and anatomical variations of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle. Methods Hundred and ffty one ultrasonographic images of the digastric muscle pairs were evaluated in Near East University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology. Morphological variations were recorded using the classifcation of the digastric muscle into 12 types by Kim et al. For the analysis, the Mann–Whitney U test and Chi-square test were used, and for the correlational analysis, Spearman's rho test was applied. P<0.05 was considered statistically signifcant in all tests. Results Seventy female and 81 male patients aged 19–60 years were evaluated. Type 1 digastric muscle was observed in 145 of 151 patients, Type 2 in 3 patients, and Type 7 in 3 patients. The thicknesses of the right and left digastric muscles were measured, and a statistically signifcant diference was observed between the groups when the genders were compared. It was observed that both right and left digastric muscle thicknesses were higher in males than females. There was a statistically signifcant positive high correlation between right and left digastric muscle thicknesses (p=0.000; r=0.736). No statistically signifcant diference was found between genders (p=0.596) in terms of anatomical variations. Conclusion Considering that the variations of the digastric muscle may have a clinical signifcance role, the normal anatomy and variations of this muscle should be well known by maxillofacial surgeons and radiologists

    Abstract Background and purpose: Haemato&shy;poietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is one of the most effective treatment methods for many malignant and non-malignant diseases. In this study, we aimed to detect electroencephalographic (EEG) anomalies at an early stage in patients who underwent allogeneic and autologous HSCT and required the management of potentially life-threatening non-convulsive seizures.. Methods: The study was conducted with 53 patients. The age, gender, HSCT type (allogeneic or autologous), and treatment regimens applied before and after HSCT were recorded. All patients underwent EEG monitoring twice, once on the first day of hospitalization and again one week after conditioning regimens began and HSCT was performed.. Results: When the pre-transplant EEG findings were examined, 34 (64.2%) patients had normal EEGs and 19 (35.8%) had abnormal EEGs. After transplantation, 27 (50.9%) had normal EEG findings, 16 (30.2%) had a basic activity disorder, 6 (11.3%) had a focal anomaly, and 4 (7.5%) had a ge&shy;ne&shy;ra&shy;lised anomaly. In the allogeneic group, the anomaly rate in post-transplant EEGs was significantly higher than that in the auto&shy;lo&shy;gous group (p&lt;0.05).. Conclusion: It is important to consider the likelihood of epileptic seizures in the clinical follow-up of HSCT patients. EEG monitoring is crucial for the early diagnosis and treat&shy;ment of such non-convulsive clinical ma&shy;ni&shy;festations.&nbsp;

    Background Due to the growing evidence of the importance of iron status in immune responses, the biomarkers of iron metabolism are of interest in novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The present prospective study was carried out to compare iron status indicated by levels of ferritin with the levels of two novel biomarkers related to iron homeostasis, hephaestin and hypoxia-inducible factors-1 (HIF-1α) in the serum of patients with COVID-19 in comparison with a control group. Methods and results Blood samples from 34 COVID-19 patients and from 43 healthy volunteers were collected and the levels of HEPH and HIF-1α were measured by ELISA and compared with levels of serum ferritin.
