    In vitro evaluation of the cytotoxic effects of alkasite restorative material on human dental pulp stem cells

    Abstract Aim: The clinical suitability of restorative dental materials is determined by evaluating their biocompatibility, and physical and chemical properties. The present study examined the cytotoxic effects of three different dental restorative materials on human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs). Material and Methods: In this study, composite, high-viscosity glass ionomer cement (HVGIC), and an alkasite were used. In total, 12 samples of each material were prepared for cytotoxicity assays. Cytotoxic effects were determined by considering biomaterial releases. Cell viability and proliferation were observed and analyzed at intervals of 24 and 72 hours using both the methyl-thiazole-diphenyl-tetrazolium (MTT) and xCELLigence cytotoxicity assays. Data were calculated using the RTCA-DP integrated software of the xCELLigence system and the GraphPad Prism 9.1.1 program. Data from the proliferation experiments were statistically evaluated using the Two-way ANOVA test. Results: Alkasite exhibited the highest cytotoxicity, whereas HVGIC and composite did not exhibit any significant difference compared with the control. There was no difference between the two time points in the cytotoxicity of composite and alkasite in the MTT assay. However, the cytotoxicity of HVGIC was higher at 72-hours than at 24-hours. Similar results were obtained with both assays. Although alkasite exhibited higher cytotoxicity than composite and HVGIC, all materials exerted slightly cytotoxic effects (60%-90% cell viability) on DPSCs. Discussion: Considering its aesthetic, and mechanical properties, alkasite can be clinically preferred instead of other materials in cavities that are not close to the dental pulp

    Effects of creative dance on functional capacity, pulmonary function, balance, and cognition in COPD patients: A randomized controlled trial

    Abstract Background: Exercise training is key to the comprehensive management of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Creative dance can be an innovative approach as effective as traditional exercise training. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate effect of creative dance-based exercise (CDE) training on functional capacity, postural stability and balance, pulmonary and cognitive functions, respiratory and peripheral muscle strength in COPD patients. Methods: Twenty-four patients with COPD were randomly allocated to either “chest physiotherapy and home-based walking program” (PT) or “CDE alongside home-based chest physiotherapy group” (PT+CDE). Both groups performed chest PT program twice a day for 5 days per week for 8 weeks. PT+CDE group received CDE training 2 days a week for 8 weeks. Primary outcome was six minute walk test (6MWT). Secondary outcomes were postural stability and balance, pulmonary function, maximum inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pressure, peripheral muscle strength, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), COPD Assessment Test (CAT), and BODE index. Outcome measures were assessed at baseline and after 8 weeks of training. Results: Both groups showed statistically significant improvements in 6MWT distance, MIP, MEP, MoCA score, CAT, and BODE index (p < 0.05). Only with CDE training was achieved improvements in postural stability and balance scores, pulmonary function, and peripheral muscle strength (p < 0.05). The improvements in 6 MWT distance, MEP, MoCA score, and CAT were greater in PT+CDE group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Use of creative dance training in addition to home-based chest PT program was more effective than chest PT program regarding primary and secondary outcomes in COPD patients

    Investigation of some nonlinear physical models: Exact and approximate solutions

    Abstract We use the ( m + 1 G� ) -expansion method in reaching the exact solution of the (3+1)-dimensional B-type Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-Boussinesq, Newel-Whitehead-Segel, and Zeldovich equations. New solutions in form of the kink, complex and singular solutions are reported. On the other hand, the Adomian decomposition method is employed to fnd approximate solutions to the the (3+1)-dimensional B-type Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-Boussinesq equation. The three-dimensional fgures and their corresponding contour plots for the reported solutions are drawn. Also, a table is presented for the approximate solutions. The reported results may be useful in studying physical features of various nonlinear mathematical models

    Towards a better understanding of commonly used medicinal plants from Turkiye: Detailed phytochemical screening and biological activity studies of two Teucrium L. species with in vitro and in silico approach

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Since ancient times, Teucrium L. species have been among the most commonly used traditional medicinal plants mainly in the Mediterranean region. From tackling gastrointestinal problems to maintaining the healthy functioning of endocrine glands, and from treating malaria to severe dermatological disorders, Teucrium species are known to have extensive therapeutic applications. Teucrium polium L. and Teucrium parviflorum Schreb. are the two members of the genus that have been used in Turkish folk medicine for various medicinal purposes. Aim of the study: To determine the phytochemical compositions of the essential oils and ethanol extracts of Teucrium polium and Teucrium parviflorum collected from different locations in Turkiye along with the investigation of in vitro antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial activities, and both in vitro and in silico enzyme inhibitory activities of the extracts. Materials and methods: Ethanol extracts of Teucrium polium aerial parts and roots, and aerial parts of Teucrium parviflorum were prepared. Volatile profiling of the essential oils by GC-MS, phytochemical profiling of the ethanol extracts by LC-HRMS, antioxidant activity by DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS cation radical scavenging, CUPRAC, and metal chelating activity assays, anticholinesterase, antityrosinase, antiurease, activities by different enzyme inhibitory activity assays, anticancer activity by SRB cell viability assay, and antimicrobial activity against a standard panel of bacteria and fungi by the microbroth dilution technique. Molecular docking studies were performed by Autodock Vina (Ver. 1.1.2). Results: The studied extracts were found to be quite rich in various biologically important volatile and phenolic compounds. (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate, which is a molecule renowned for having great therapeutic potential, was the major compound of all extracts. Teucrium polium aerial parts extract was revealed as a great source for naringenin with 16327 ± 685.23 μg/g extract. All extracts exerted significant antioxidant activity by different methods. All extracts demonstrated antibutrylcholinesterase, antityrosinase, and antiurease activities by in vitro and in silico assays. Teucrium polium roots extract stood out with remarkable tyrosinase and urease inhibitory and cytotoxic activities. Conclusion: The obtained results from this multi-disciplinary study proves that the traditional use of these two Teucrium species is justified, and the mechanisms behind are enlightened

    Diş hekimliğinde multidisipliner yaklaşımların çok önemli olduğu ve bu disiplinler arası sinerjinin sağlandığı oral diagnoz, diş hekimliği ile tıp hekimliği arasında köprü görevini üstlenmektedir. Uzun yıllar bu prensipler çerçevesinde genç hekim arkadaşlarımıza, asistanlarımıza ve uzmanlık öğrencilerimize bu alanda rehber olduğumuza inanıyoruz. Bu rehberliğin oluşturduğu ekolle diş hekimliğinde semptomlar, ayırıcı tanı yöntemleri, tedavi planlamaları, sistemik hastalıklar ve acil durumlardaki değerlendirmelerde didaktik bir yaklaşımla pratik uygulamalı bir bakış açısı geliştirilmiştir. Düşüncelerimiz doğrultusunda daha önceki yıllarda editörlüğünü üstlendiğim “Oral Diagnoz”(1995) ve “Sistemik Yaklaşımlarla Oral Diagnoz” (2007) isimli mevcut kitaplarımızdan sonra gün geçtikçe baş döndürücü bir hızla değişen bilgiler ve klinik yaklaşımların diş hekimliğinde de tezahür etmesiyle güncel kalma ihtiyacı tüm gerçekliğiyle ortadadır. Oral diagnoz alanında yine editörlüğünü üstlendiğim yeni kitabım bu anlayışla yola çıkılarak düzenlenmiştir. Uzun soluklu bu yolculukta, akademik merakı ve etik sorumluluğu yüksek çok değerli hocalarımız olduğu gibi mesleğin başındaki genç hekim arkadaşlarımız da bizlere eşlik etmiştir. Kitabımızda, oral diagnoza giriş ile başlayarak tüm sistemik hastalıkları ve klinikte bu sistemik hastalıklara diş hekimliği yönünden nasıl yaklaşılması gerektiğini de içine alacak şekilde çok geniş yelpazede bilgi sunulmaktadır. Bu bilgi paylaşımları sayesinde ayırıcı tanılarda farklı bakış açıları kazandırmak amaçlanmış olup hem akademik ortamda hem de diş hekimliği pratiğinde meslektaşlarımızla olan etkileşimimiz bizi ayrıca çok mutlu etmektedir.     Packed red blood cell transfusion as a predictor of moderate-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia: A comparative cohort study of very preterm infants

    Abstract Objective: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal intensive care units. Our aim was to evaluate association between packed red blood cell transfusion and the development of BPD in very preterm infants. Study design: This retrospective study of very preterm infants (mean gestational age: 27.1 +/- 2.4 weeks, birth weight: 970 +/- 271 g) was conducted at Biruni University (Turkey) between July 2016 and December 2020. Results: BPD developed in 107 of the 246 enrolled neonates, including 47 (43.9%), 27 (25.3%), and 33 (30.8%) diagnosed with mild, moderate, and severe BPD, respectively. A total of 728 transfusions were administered. The increased number (4 transfusions [2-7] vs. 1 [1-3], p = 0.001) and volume of transfusions (75 mL/kg volume [40-130] vs. 20 [15-43], p = 0.001) were significantly higher in infants with BPD compared to those without BPD. The transfusion volume cut-off for the prediction of BPD by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was 42 mL/kg (sensitivity 73.6%; specificity 75%; area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve: 0.82). In multivariate analysis, multiple transfusions and larger transfusion volume were independent risk factors for moderate-severe BPD. Conclusion: The increased number and volume of transfusions were associated with BPD in very preterm infants. A packed red blood cell transfusion volume >= 42 mL/kg was a statistically significant predictor of the development of BPD at a postmenstrual age of 36 weeks.     ÖZET Bu çalışma ergoterapi bölümü öğrencilerinin duygusal zekâ ve duyusal işlemleme becerileri arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmaya katılan ergoterapi öğrencilerine beş adet ön bilgi sorusu, Adolesan Yetişkin Duyu Profili Anketi ve Duygusal Zekâ Değerlendirme Ölçeği uygulanmıştır. Çalışmanın büyük bir çoğunluğunu kadın katılımcılar oluşturmuştur. Çalışma sonuçlarına göre çalışmaya katılan ergoterapi öğrencilerinin DZDÖ alt boyutu olan öz motivasyon ve kendi duygularını yönetme becerilerinin düşük düzeyde olduğu görülmüştür. AYDP sonuçları incelendiğinde katılımcıların kayıt kategorisinde %42,5 oranında, duyusal arayış kategorisinde %23,9 oranında, duyusal hassasiyet kategorisinde %49,6 oranında ve duyusal kaçınma kategorisinde %45,1 oranında çoğu insandan farklı özellikte olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Katılımcıların AYDP kayıt puanı ile DZDÖ kendi duygularını yönetme (p<0,05) ve öz motivasyon (p<0,05) alt boyutları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı negatif bir ilişki bulunmuştur. Katılımcıların AYDP duyusal arayış puanları ile DZDÖ toplam puanları (p<0,01), DZDÖ duygusal farkındalık (p<0,01), empati (p<0,05) ve diğerlerinin duygularını yönetme (p<0,01) alt boyutları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı pozitif bir ilişki bulunmaktadır. Katılımcıların AYDP duyusal kaçınma puanları ile DZDÖ empati alt boyutu arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı pozitif bir ilişki olduğu görülmüştür (p<0,05). Katılımcıların AYDP duyusal hassasiyet puanları ile DZDÖ ve ölçeğin hiçbir alt boyut puanı ile istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki bulunamamıştır. Çalışma sonuçları ergoterapi öğrencilerinin duyusal profil ve duygusal zekâ becerileri arasında anlamlı ilişkiler olduğunu ve bu iki bireysel özelliğin birbirini etkileyebileceğini ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu çalışma ülkemizde ergoterapi bölümü öğrencilerinin duygusal zekâ becerileri ve duyusal süreçlerini inceleyen ilk çalışmadır. Konu ile ilgili farklı çalışmalar yapılması önerilmektedir.ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and sensory processing of occupational therapy students. Five prior knowledge questions, AASP Questionnaire and EQES were applied to occupational therapy students participating in the study. The majority of the study consisted of female participants. According to the results of the study, it was seen that the occupational therapy students participating in the study had a low level of selfmotivation and emotional self-management skills, which are the EQES subdimensions. When the AASP results were examined, it was concluded that the participants were different from most people at a rate of 42.5% in the low registration category, 23.9% in the sensory seeking category, 49.6% in the sensory sensitivity category and 45.1% in the sensory avoidance category. A statistically significant negative correlation was found between the participants low registration score of AASP and the emotional self-managing (p<0.05), self-motivation (p<0.05) score. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the participants sensory seeking score of AASP and EQES total score (p<0,01), emotional self-awareness (p<0,01), empathy (p<0,05), emotional managing the others (p<0,01) score. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the participants sensory avoidance score of AASP and empathy (p<0,05) score. There was no statistically significant relationship between the participants sensory sensitivity score of AASP and EQES total score and also any sub-dimension scores of the scale. The results of the study revealed that there is a significant relationship between the sensory profile and emotional intelligence skills of occupational therapy students and that these two individual characteristics can affect each other. This is the first study in our country to examine the emotional intelligence skills and sensory processes of occupational therapy students

    Analysis of stone free rates and residual fragment sizes following standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy: mistakes in the treatment of non opaque kidney stones

    Abstract Our presented study aimed to evaluate the possible effects of stone opacity, on both the success of percutaneous nephrolithotomy and the sizes of residual fragments following the procedure. Medical records of patients undergoing PCNL treatment for kidney stones at our clinic between July 2014 and May 2022 were evaluated in a retrospective manner. A total sample size of 304 patients with the required criteria was included. Patients were divided into two groups based on the radiopacity status of the stones assessed in the kidney-ureter-bladder graphy (KUB) [Group O (n = 211): opaque, Group N (n = 93): non-opaque)]. Demographic data, laboratory results, and surgical follow-up information were comparatively evaluated between groups. The mean age and percentage of female patients were higher in Group N (45.2 vs. 25,1%; p < 0.001). Also, patients in this group were associated with more comorbidities. No significant difference was present regarding stones' laterality, size, surface area, and localization. Cases in the Group N group demonstrated higher median hemoglobin reduction [1.7 (IQR = 1.2-2.5) vs. 2 (IQR = 1.6-2.6); p = 0.047]. The stone-free rates in Group O patients were higher (67.8% vs. 53.8%; p = 0.014). The size of the residual fragments was meaningfully larger in Group N cases [8 (IQR = 7-13) vs. 10 (IQR = 8-16); p = 0.032]. Finally, no significant difference was observed between the groups regarding both minor (as grade 3a and below) and major (grade 3b and above) assessed by the Modified Clavien-Dindo Classification. Our data show that treatment of patients with so-called non-opaque kidney stones by PCNL results in low SFR and larger residual fragments, which is due to a variety of errors that should be avoided by appropriate measures

    Mathematical analysis of a new nonlinear dengue epidemic model via deterministic and fractional approach

    Abstract We developed a dengue epidemic model by considering hospitalized class and harmonic mean incidence rate. A qualitative study of the proposed model was conducted. The Basic reproduction number, and local and global stability are established. The highly dominant parameters on basic reproduction number R0 have been found by sensitivity analysis. NSFD and RK-4 schemes are used for numerical solutions. Furthermore, this manuscript considers the novel fractionalorder operator developed by Atangana-Baleanu for transmission dynamics of the Dengue epidemic. Assuming the importance of the non-local Atangana-Baleanu fractional-order approach, the transmission mechanism of Dengue has been investigated while taking into account different phases of infection and various transmission routes of the disease. To conduct the proposed study, first of all, we shall formulate the model by using the classical operator of ordinary derivatives. We utilize the fractional order derivative and the model will be extended to a model containing fractional order derivatives. The operator being used is the fractional differential operator and has fractional order U1. The approach of newton’s polynomial is considered and a new numerical scheme is developed which helped in presenting an iterative process for the proposed ABC system. Based on this scheme, sample curves are obtained for various values of U1 and a pattern is derived between the dynamics of the infection and the order of the derivative

    The relationship of multiple sclerosis with brain lobes and related structures: A volumetric analysis study

    ABSTRACT Objective: Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques are at the center of studies on multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disorder characterized by demyelination and neurodegeneration in the central nervous system. We aimed to show the differences in the white matter (WM) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volumes in addition to the frontal, temporal, and occipital lobes (OLs) in MS disease and their relations with each other through MR images. Methods: Images of 50 MS and 50 control group patients randomly selected for use in our study were obtained from Biruni University Faculty of Medicine. Using volBrain software, the volumes of brain structures were calculated on T1-weighted MR images in accordance with the determined parameters. Data analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS 25 package programs. Results: Volumetric calculations with statistically significant results between groups: abnormal appearance white matter (AaWM) (p<0.001), total volume of WM and gray matter (WMGM) (p=0.001), CSF (p=0.002) and frontal lobe (FL) (p=0.024) volumes. Parameters with high correlation according to correlation analysis; WMGM-CSF (r=0.999), FL supplementary motor cortex (SMC) (r=0.742), FL-temporal lobe (TL) (r=0.827), FL-temporal pole (TP) (r=0.652), SMC-TL (r=0.663), TL-TP (r=0.875), OL-occipital pole (r=0.649) and FL-frontal pole (r=0.686) volumes. Conclusion: The presence of a decrease in FL and WM against the volumetric increase in AaWM and CSF is the most important of the predicted and significant results in this study. The fact that the significance levels in other parameters are comparatively low indicates that further studies should focus on more specific structures and methods, and all the results obtained can give clinicians a clue for the diagnosis step of MS disease
