Abstract BackgroundSunken eyes have become a most important target of periorbital area aesthetics. Throughout history, the aesthetics of the periorbital region have been emphasized, and various surgical techniques related to this region have been described. Most of these techniques provide only soft tissue solutions; therefore, additional surgical interventions may be required. The aim of our study was to introduce an endoscopic supraorbital shaving (SOS) technique for the treatment of individuals with sunken eyes.MethodsBetween 2020 and 2021, 34 patients (30 females, 4 males; mean age 36.2 years) with sunken eyes were treated with our described technique. All patients underwent an endoscopic SOS procedure under general anesthesia.ResultsA total of 34 patients (30 women and four men), aged 23-59 years old (mean = 36.2 years), underwent the endoscopic SOS procedure. The mean follow-up period was 13 months (range: 12-16 months). Postoperatively, significant improvement in lateral convexity was achieved in all patients. Physical examinations performed at the control visits revealed no functional problems in any patients and no visible or palpable irregularities or contour deformities. No complications were encountered regarding the SOS procedure.ConclusionsThe technique described here provides significant improvement in lateral convexity compared to other techniques used in patients with sunken eyes. No additional eyelid intervention is needed. Unlike the techniques previously described in the literature, intervention is made in the bone structure, thereby providing more accurate results.Level of Evidence VThis journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. Computational analysis of heat transfer for hybrid nanofluid flow within a wavy lid-driven cavity with entropy generation and non-uniform heating

    No full text
ABSTRACT This study investigates entropy generation, mixed convection, and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects in hybrid nanofluid flow within a wavy lid-driven cavity with non-uniform heated wall. This research addresses a significant problem in heat transfer system efficiency which is essential for uses such as solar energy collection, medical devices, and microelectronics cooling. The nondimensional governing equations are solved using the Finite Element Method (FEM) for various key parameters including Hartmann number (Ha), Grashof number (Gr), Reynolds number (Re), volume fraction (ϕ), number of undulations (N), wave amplitude (A), radius of cylinder (r) and inclined magnetic field (γ). Findings show that the enhancement of Grashof number, inclined angle, volume fraction and Reynolds number depict increasing flow magnitude but the number of undulations, radius of cylinder and Hartmann number cause a decay in flow strength. Increasing Re and Gr enhances heat transfer, with an average Nusselt number increase of 5.4 times when Re = 300 and Gr = 106 compared to Re = 10 and Gr = 103. Entropy generation is significantly influenced by N with the highest total entropy observed at N = 4. In contrast to previous studies, the novelty of this investigation lies in the unique geometric configuration featuring a wavy lid-driven cavity with an embedded cylinder and non-uniformly heated walls. This study of hybrid nanofluids and an angled magnetic field provides new paths for improving heat transfer and decreasing entropy generation. This study enhances previous literature by providing comprehensive quantitative insights into how they interact between those parameters opening the way for more efficient heat management in modern technological systems

Materials and methods: A total number of 560 university students were included at different education levels. Sociodemographic data regarding age, gender, current school level, family income, and smoking frequency status were obtained. Anxiety levels were evaluated through the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale and awareness levels through the Coronavirus Awareness Scale. Oral hygiene habits before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were also recorded. In addition, the participants were asked to evaluate their oral hygiene and general health status before and after the pandemic. Data were collected online using a data collection form consisting of five sections via the Google Forms (Google Inc., Mountain View, California, United States) platform. The data were statistically analyzed. p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The statistical analysis revealed that there is a statistically significant difference in COVID-19 anxiety levels according to the current school level and family income (all with p<0.05). COVID-19 awareness levels differed significantly according to the current school level and family income (all with p<0.05). A statistically significant discrepancy was identified in the oral hygiene habits of the examined population according to gender, smoking frequency status, and family income prior to the onset of the pandemic (all with p<0.05). The examination of oral hygiene habits during the pandemic revealed statistically significant differences in accordance with the subjects' gender, smoking frequency status, current school level, and family income (all with p<0.05). During the pandemic, there was an increase in the frequency of tooth brushing, tongue brushing, toothbrush change, dental floss use, and acidic beverage consumption compared to the pre-pandemic period (all with p<0.05). Conclusion: The present study examined the impact of the ongoing pandemic on oral hygiene habits among university students. The findings revealed a notable increase in the frequency of many oral hygiene habits during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic levels. However, the study also observed that while anxiety levels were low, awareness levels were high. This study is the first to evaluate awareness and anxiety levels and oral hygiene habits in this context

Abstract Introduction: Nanoparticles are used in various fields such as chemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology, and food science since they provide higher sensitivity than traditional optical detection methods. Recently, synthesis of nanomaterials using green chemistry has become popular. Many phytochemical components are used in the synthesis of nanoparticles, including vitamins, proteins, polysaccharides, glycosides, essential oils and phenolic compounds. Objective: A novel green nanotechnology-based method using quince seed mucilage (QSM) was designed for the determination of ascorbic acid in pharmaceutical preparations. QSM, a natural polysaccharide, was used as a bioreducing and stabilizing reagent in the proposed silver nanoparticle (SNP)-based method. Method: In the first stage of the developed method, silver(I) is reduced to silver(0) via QSM and spherical, homogeneous SNPs were prepared (QSM-SNPs). In the second stage of the developed method, SNPs nuclei were enlarged with the addition of ascorbic acid. The developed method was validated by performance parameters (linearity, recovery, and precision). Ascorbic acid determination was performed by measuring increase in absorbance at 420 nm. Results: The limit of detection and limit of quantification for ascorbic acid were, respectively, found to be at 0.27 and 0.90 μM. The QSM-SNP-based method was successfully applied to effervescent tablets containing ascorbic acid. The standards of the excipients frequently used in pharmaceutical preparations did not interfere with the developed method. Conclusion: The developed QSM-SNP-based method satisfies the requirements of green nanotechnology. The developed QSM-SNP-based method is simple, fast, eco-friendly and low-cost

ABSTRACT Background: In recent years, studies reported that the incidence of infective endocarditis (IE) has increased despite the decrease in rheumatic heart diseases, great advances in medical and surgical treatment methods, and prophylactic antibiotic therapies. However, there is no bibliometric analysis based on the visual mapping method in the literature. In the study, we aimed to analyze the hot topics in IE, the distribution of publications in terms of country, institution, journal, author, and their relationships by assessing IE articles published in the 130 years between 1892 and 2022. Methods: Publications before 2023 were analyzed using the keywords “infective” and “endocarditis” in the Scopus database. Results: Approximately 25% of the publications on IE were from the USA followed by Japan, France, and the UK. A total of 116 keywords were used at least 15 times and the keywords were categorized into 9 clusters by the VOSviewer program. The keywords used more than 100 times except “infective endocarditis” were “echocardiography,” “mortality,” “surgery,” “Staphylococcus aureus,” “cardiac surgery,” “epidemiology,” and “prognosis” 247, 191, 152, 142, 130, 122, and 119 times, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the study is the most comprehensive study globally on IE with the widest time range including the visual mapping method. Conclusion: Since our study reveals the changes in the literature related to infective endocarditis, we think that it will be a guide in planning new research studies. We believe that periodic repetition of bibliometric analyses and keyword mapping studies will contribute to the quantitative and qualitative development of scientific productivity globall

ABSTRACT In the present medical epoch, the prevailing approach of drug discovery, which focuses on inhibiting a single target, has been superseded by the concept of designing drugs that target more than one specific site. Herein, we present the design and synthesis of a novel series of 1-oxo-3,4-dihydronaphthalene substituted sulfonamides (5aj) with human carbonic anhydrase (hCA) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities as potential dualtarget agents. The design of target compounds 5a-j incorporated two key elements: i) The sulfonamide group, which is widely recognized for its high affinity for the active site of hCAs, and ii) the effectiveness of 2-benzylidene-1-tetralone class compounds in some neurodegenerative disorders. All reported sulfonamides were evaluated for their inhibitory effect against hCA I, II isoforms, and AChE. Both hCAs, and AChE were potently inhibited by 5a-j with KI constants in the nanomolar range; 47.71–113.20 nM, 28.05–206.60 nM, and 87.38–136.60 nM, respectively, compared to standard inhibitors, acetazolamide (KIs of 439.17 and 98.28 nM for hCA I and hCA II, respectively) and tacrine (KI of 159.61 nM). 5i exhibited the best multi-target inhibitory activity against hCA I (KI of 47.71 nM), hCA II (KI of 30.75 nM), and AChE (KI of 88.97 nM), while 5b showed a selectivity index (hCA I/II) of 3.61. Moreover, a cytotoxic activity assay for sulfonamides 5a-j was applied on the human breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cell line as well as on the non-tumoral mouse fibroblast L929 cell. Thereafter, extensive molecular dynamics simulations revealed the dynamic behavior of ligand/enzyme complex and predicted vital ligand contacts in the binding pocket

Abstract BackgroundThe study aimed to analyze cytokine levels, including interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-10, and IL-36 gamma, to investigate the link between pro- and anti-inflammatory responses in periodontal conditions and assess their potential as diagnostic biomarkers for distinguishing between different types of periodontal conditions.Methods80 systemically healthy non-smokers (25 periodontally healthy, 25 with gingivitis, 30 with periodontitis) were included. Clinical periodontal parameters were recorded, and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples were obtained. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was applied to determine the diagnostic value of cytokines. Results: IL-36 gamma had the highest sensitivity for diagnosing periodontitis, although its specificity for identifying those without periodontitis was relatively low. The combination of IL-1 beta and IL-36 gamma was the most effective in differentiating periodontitis from periodontal health. IL-10 was found to be an acceptable discriminator for distinguishing gingivitis from healthy conditions. However, its sensitivity and specificity for identifying gingivitis were lower. The combination of the three cytokines showed the highest ability to distinguish between periodontitis and gingivitis.ResultsIL-36 gamma had the highest sensitivity for diagnosing periodontitis, although its specificity for identifying those without periodontitis was relatively low. Further studies are needed to validate these results and explore the potential of these cytokines in periodontal disease management. All three of these cytokines exhibit exceptional diagnostic accuracy, particularly in distinguishing between chronic periodontitis and periodontal health. Moreover, the combination of IL-1 beta and IL-36 gamma stands out as the most accurate diagnostic indicator for periodontitis. This combination could serve as a robust biomarker panel for the early detection and monitoring of periodontal disease, potentially allowing for timely interventions to prevent disease progression

Abstract Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a cancer treatment. Singlet oxygen is produced as a result of the photochemical reaction between light, photosensitizer (PS), and molecular oxygen, which kills cells. Colon cancer, affecting 1.23 million people worldwide, often requires surgery but has high recurrence and metastasis rates. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) represents an alternative treatment for colon cancer. This study used MTT assays to evaluate cell viability and applied Zinc (II) Phthalocyanine (ZnPc) photosensitizers to the colorectal adenocarcinoma (HT-29) cell line to investigate cancer pathways via flow cytometry and q-PCR. The results showed that PDT with ZnPc significantly reduced cell viability in HT-29 cells and induced apoptosis at a rate of 53%. According to q-PCR results, CT values of ten out of thirty genes were significant, and their association with cancer was evaluated
