    Political Persuasion Through Social Media

In contemporary society, social media has emerged as the predominant platform for the dissemination of political information, with a primary goal of influencing user perspectives. Despite its prevalence, scant research has scrutinized the cognitive mechanisms underlying the reception of political messages via social media and their consequent impact on attitude transformation. This study endeavors to investigate the nexus between political information consumption on social media and the efficacy of political persuasion, while also probing the roles of political interest and cognitive elaboration in this persuasive process. Employing a survey methodology distributed through social media networks, the study amassed responses from 470 participants residing in Jakarta and its environs. Findings elucidate the discernible influence of social media usage for political information consumption and cognitive elaboration on the dynamics of political persuasion, whereas political interest exhibited negligible impact. Consequently, this study underscores the potential for political information purveyors to leverage social media platforms to foster cognitive engagement among users, thereby enhancing receptivity to political messaging

The Popularity of Extension Workers in the Exchange of Information on Yard Utilization

The communication process in extension activities occurs not only between extension workers and farmers but also among extension workers. Communication among extension workers forms a social network. This study aims to analyze the popularity of extension workers within social networks in exchanging information on yard land use. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach and the whole network analysis method using Pajek 5.18 software. The research informants were extension workers in the Yogyakarta Special Region, spread across Sleman Regency, Bantul Regency, Kulon Progo Regency, Gunungkidul Regency, and Yogyakarta City. The results showed that the popular extension workers in each district/city were those from their respective districts/cities. Extension workers are popular because they have the most communication activities (in degree) or receive the most information about yard land use in social networks. Popular extension workers play an important role in social networks, such as having high closeness centrality to accelerate the flow of information and acting as intermediaries for other extension workers to control the flow of information

Utopia or Dystopia: The Dichotomy of “The Social Dilemma” Documentary in Shaping Public Perception

Today's technology industry faces numerous issues, including scandals, data theft, consumer complaints, technology addiction, fake news, political polarization, and hacking. These problems are raised in the Netflix docudrama The Social Dilemma. This research discusses how algorithms and social media platform design can manipulate user behavior in both utopian and dystopian ways. It analyzes these dynamics through economic, political, sociocultural, and media perspectives, using Christian Fuchs' critical theory approach with critical discourse analysis and semiotics. The findings show that algorithms act as a double-edged sword. In a dystopian context, technology creates a bleak future in which it controls and damages human life. Conversely, in a utopian context, industrial technology has the potential to foster a more positive public perception. This research successfully explores how the increasing reliance on technology for work affects individuals' understanding of truth and shapes their perspectives on various aspects of life. By combining critical discourse analysis and semiotics, this study comprehensively analyzes the implications of digital labor on both utopian and dystopian narratives

Evaluation of Technological Determinism of Mobile Journalism: Case Study of Television Journalists in Indonesia

The evolution of smartphone technology has instigated significant shifts in journalistic culture. Both consciously and subconsciously, a multitude of television journalists have embraced mobile journalism (MoJo), especially for correspondents or journalists in the regions. This study aims to elucidate the impact of technological determinism on television journalists and how it fosters a distinctive MoJo work culture. Using a case study methodology, the research integrates observations and interviews with 35 television journalists who have engaged in mobile journalism. Data analysis focuses on four primary areas: technological determinism within journalists in the realms of reductionism, monism, neutralization, and technological imperatives. The research findings suggest that the adoption of MoJo does not obliterate the existing journalistic culture but serves as an alternative avenue for generating diverse and creative news content. The use of technology is inherently tied to the user, highlighting the need for enhanced moral considerations in its application. While the ease of technology facilitates reporting, journalists continue to uphold the content of their reports and maintain their professionalism. The evaluation of the MoJo concept in Indonesia should be supported by product regulations and standardization to ensure it does not become conflated with content creator practices

Investigative reporting in the digital era faces challenges due to the presence of online and social media. Long reporting times, limited budgets, and minimal editorial resources increasingly undermine the sustainability of investigative journalism. The competition for rapid news coverage further pressures investigative reporting. Several journalists in Yogyakarta and other regions address these challenges by practicing collaborative journalism through collaborative newsrooms. This research aims to describe how journalists in the field use collaborative newsrooms to produce investigative reports. It explores collaborative journalism practices as a middle ground to deliver credible, public-interest reporting using data and investigative journalism principles. The study employs a case study method, involving in-depth interviews with journalists and the analysis of published news data. The findings show that journalists in Yogyakarta use a temporary and separate model for their collaborative newsrooms, focusing on short-term collaboration on a single topic. These newsrooms leverage technology to facilitate communication and data sharing. Tasks are divided among participants to ensure comprehensive, in-depth, data-driven reporting. The reports are published in online media, serving as a strategic approach to presenting investigative journalistic work often constrained by limited media space
