Media, Islamic religious authority and the imagination of ummat in Indonesia
This article investigates the history of Islamic religious authority in Indonesiaand the role of the media in the development of religious authority and the imagination of Islamic community. The old traditional authority of local imam or Islamic clerics is now being challenged by transnational interpreters of Islam with the availability of direct connection with Islamic clerics and religious learning resources from the Middle East, the United States, the United Kingdom or anywhere else in the world facilitated by the internet. The article argues that the media play a significant role in the current understanding of ummat and Islamic religious authority in the global and local contexts. By employing the method of discourse analysis the article also argues that the contestation of Islamic religious authority has contributed to the process of re-imagination and re-conceptualisation of the concept of global Muslim ummat by Muslim groups in Indonesia.

Technology as communication media and marketing communication are two things which are related to each other. Communication media can become a means to deliver messages to the people as the audience. Rapid technological developments also contribute in familiarizing internet to the society. This phenomenon can be seen from the large number of social networkers that use Facebook for Blackberry, Twitter for IPad, and so forth. The change of people’s behavior which is now more interested to the internet becomes a challenge to the advertising agencies to promote their clients’ products. The agencies are challenged to find the way to make their clients’ product can reach public through different communication media. Similarly, Jakcloth Summer Festival 2014 “Heroes of Our Time” also used social media as one of the integrated marketing communication strategies. The year 2013 is called a political year by many observers. It is because this year KPU announces the political parties which will join 2014 General Election. This period is also used by the leaders of political parties to consolidate their organizations, and determine the candidates of legislature members or even consider the figures for 2014 presidential candidates. It is natural that the figures of presidential candidates start to emerge in the society. It can be through socialization and introduction of the Presidential candidates, either in the form of posters, billboards, or advertisements in the media and other ways. The purpose is that the figures will be immediately recognized by the people who become constituents. This study examines the role of media in society. So far public communication is running tend to individually. It is very important to revised it. To vote on general election is individual right, but political participation is not always on individual action. Organized of public group have to develop as the alternative way to opposite of power abuse from political elite. Political elite frequently exploitation the voters with the false promises and corruption after they to be political actors. Public communication must support of critical discussion between society group and in society. Here we assume that every people in their community, they have potential to develop their agenda and create dialogue by their self. The assumed that dialogue in their communities tend to freefrom anti pluralism because the topic on discussion in their communitiesbased on their interests. The Dynamics of Women’s Role in Public Area : A Framing Analysis toward Women’s Character in Leading Religius TV Drama
Meskipun banyak kritik dan kontroversi, drama TV agama telah memantapkan dirinya sebagai salah satu program TV yang paling banyak ditonton di Indonesia. Seperti banyak yang lain dari jenisnya, drama TV agama menyibukkan diri dengan konflik sekitar karakter wanitanya. Tapi karena dicap sebagai drama religius, orang mungkin bertanya-tanya bagaimana prinsip-prinsip agama yang diterapkan pada program hiburan seperti ini. Pertanyaan ini ditujukkan pada bagaimana program menggambarkan peran karakter wanita di tempat umum: apakah memberdayakan perempuan melalui karakter wanita nya, atau tidak? Sebuah analisis framing dilakukan pada tiga drama TV agama yang disiarkan pada tahun 2010 telah menemukan beberapa kesimpulan. “Ketika Cinta Bertasbih” dan “Para Pencari tuhan (4 musim)” telah berhasil menggambarkan karakter wanita dalam peran penting dalam mengatasi isu-isu publik kontemporer. Sementara itu, “Safa & Marwah” gagal dalam mengenai masalah tersebut. “Safa & Marwah” didominasi oleh masalah domestik dan konflik yang dibingkai karakter wanita dalam stereotipe tradisional yang paling ketinggalan zaman. Interaksi Simbolik Pekerja Seks Komersial High Class di Kalangan Mahasiswa Kota Padang
This paper is the result of research in Padang, West Sumatra, about sex business which is done by female college students who continue their study in this city. TThrough the research, it could be revealed that they become prostitutes not only because of economic factors but also because of their own need. Interpersonal communication in the form of persuasive communication and showing their trademark symbols both verbal and non-verbal are performed in order to attract their male customers. However, these high class prostitutes communicate differently when they play their role as female college students. Their symbolic interactions when become students are very much different from their night life. At campus, they only wear casual clothes, show casual appearance, and tend to choose certain people to be their friends. In addition, these kinds of students are still motivated to continue and finish their study. They do it not only for their own prestige but also for fulfilling their family demand to be educated intellectuals in the future.
