Representasi Serapan Bahasa Portugis sebagai Pemerkaya Kosakata Bahasa Indonesia

    No full text
Indonesian language is rich in loanwords. This is due to the historical presence of various colonizers in the country, such as the Netherlands, Portugal, England, and Japan. Additionally, there were trading interactions with nations like the Arabs, Indians, Chinese, and Persians. The influx of these foreign cultures inevitably left linguistic imprints on the Indonesian language. Portuguese, which arrived in 1511 with initial trading intentions, ended up being enticed into colonization, leading to the unwitting integration of Portuguese words into the Indonesian society. This research aims to examine the extent to which Portuguese words have been absorbed into the Indonesian language and have been used by the language users in this country without awareness. A qualitative method was employed in this study, relying on primary data gathered through direct interviews with native speakers of Portuguese. Secondary data was also collected through the analysis of various dictionaries. The findings of this research indicate that only a limited number of Portuguese words have been assimilated into the Indonesian language. Several words related to religious elements, food, and object names continue to be in use, such as "gereja" (church), "natal" (Christmas), "sekolah" (school), "bangku" (bench), and "kemeja" (shirt). This phenomenon can be attributed to the strong linguistic ties of the Indonesian society with religious and socio-cultural matters, as these loanwords have become deeply integrated and commonly used by the population

Genre-based Approach (GBA) is a teaching method that has long been implemented in the English learning context as well as other foreign language learning contexts. In this study, we examined the application of GBA in an online BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing or Indonesian for Foreign Language Speakers) class by observing the classroom interaction patterns. The objective of this research is twofold. It is to investigate the extent to which the genre-based approach is applied and to discover the application of genre-based stages Building Knowledge of Field and Modelling in one online BIPA class. This study employed a qualitative discourse analytic method, specifically classroom discourse analysis following pedagogic register framework from systemic functional linguistics. The data were collected from the recordings of online BIPA class in two sessions, focusing on the stage of Building Knowledge of the Field and Modelling. The results indicate a variety of learning activities and a tendency of classifying a language skill to a specific stage from the GBA. These variations of activities and the classification of language skills suggest that there is a modification of the stage of genre-based approach in online BIPA class which is distinctive to that of other offline implementations

This article investigates the representation of Indonesia and Thailand in contemporary Western travel writing, focusing primarily on how this cultural production presents the two countries temporally and spatially. Furthermore, it elaborates the rhetorics of colonial legacy and cosmopolitan vision within the representation process. To solve its research problems, this study applies several concepts, including the concept of travel writing, the concept of subjectivity, the concept of colonial legacy, and the concept of cosmopolitan vision. This research is carried out methodologically through a hermeneutic reading of the studied works by also considering the external factors that influence them. For this research, a sample of three works of western travel writing published in the past few decades and written by western travel writers from variety of backgrounds, were selected. They are Paul Theroux\u27s The Great Railway Bazaar (1976); Pico Iyer\u27s Video of Night at Kathmandu (1988); and Robert Kaplan\u27s Monsoon, The Indian Ocean and the Future of American Power (2010). This study finds that Indonesia and Thailand have been represented diversely in contemporary western travel writing, creating discourses that are influenced by colonial legacy or cosmopolitan vision

Al-Attas in one of his sub-chapters mentions the use of the word \u27Ikan Tunggal\u27 (Unique Fish) in one of Hamza Fansuri\u27s works entitled Sha’ir Jawl fasal fl bayan ‘Ilm al-Suluk wa’l-Tawhid. "Ikan Tunggal" or Unique Fish is a symbol of the Spirit, or can be interpreted as \u27soul\u27 or \u27al-Ruh\u27. The problem discussed is whether the meaning of "ikan" brought by Hamza Fansuri affects the meaning of "ikan" in Malay texts or not. The corpus data used comes from the Malay Concordance Project by utilizing the direct search and chronological order features to bring up the word "ikan" in different texts and periods. This is qualitative research and the collected data would be analyzed with descriptive methods. All the collected data would be interpreted one by one according to the context in the text itself and with some addition to the secondary data, which is another research to support the arguments. The results of this paper conclude that the concept of "ikan" brought by Hamza Fansuri was not immediately accepted and followed by Malay authors and copyists because they still have their own variety. However, two works are excluded from interpreting "ikan" with such a concept, namely "ikan" as a sign in a dream and "ikan" as a catastrophic phenomenon from Allah SWT.Keyword: Hamzah Fansuri; Al-Attas; Ikan; Naskah Melayu; Semiotics; Roland Barthes
