Economic analyses for the evaluation of is projects
Information system projects usually have numerous uncertainties and several conditions of risk that make their economic evaluation a challenging task. Each year, several information system projects are cancelled before completion as a result of budget overruns at a cost of several billions of dollars to industry. Although engineering economic analysis offers tools and techniques for evaluating risky projects, the tools are not enough to place information system projects on a safe budget/selection track. There is a need for an integrative economic analysis model that will account for the uncertainties in estimating project costs benefits and useful lives of uncertain and risky projects. The fuzzy set theory has the capability of representing vague data and allows mathematical operators and programming to be applied to the fuzzy domain. The theory is primarily concerned with quantifying the vagueness in human thoughts and perceptions. In this article, the economic evaluation of information system projects using fuzzy present value and fuzzy B/C ratio is analyzed. A numerical illustration is included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods
The influence of technology on the performance of Brazilian call centers
Os call centers (CC) têm mostrado constante evolução com o decorrer do tempo. Existe um uso intensivo de tecnologia nos CCs. No entanto, nem sempre para um lado positivo. O artigo é baseado em um survey feito com 103 empresas brasileiras que possuem ou provêm serviços de call center e procura verificar a contribuição da tecnologia sobre quatro distintas dimensões: redução de custos, relacionamento com clientes, canais de comunicação e monitoramento dos empregados. O referencial teórico utilizado é bastante eclético baseando-se em considerações estratégicas, informações das áreas técnicas de telecomunicações e tecnologia da informação, marketing em especial à área de relacionamento com clientes e, principalmente, de vários estudos nacionais e internacionais que vêm sendo desenvolvidos a respeito do atendimento e satisfação dos clientes. Os resultados mostram que o uso intenso de tecnologia não significa uma melhoria geral no desempenho de atendimento em todas as dimensões avaliadas e que escolhas precisam ser feitas por algumas dimensões em detrimento de outras.Call centers (CCs) show an evolution over the course of time. There is an intensive use of technology in CCs, although not always a positive side. The article is based on a survey carried out among the 103 Brazilian companies that have come (falta algum complemento, não conseguimos entender a frase) and call center services and seeks to verify the contribution of technology in four distinct dimensions: cost reduction, customer relations, communication channels and monitoring of employees. The theoretical framework is eclectic based on strategic considerations, details of the technical areas of telecommunications and information technology, marketing. It focus particularly in the area of customer relations and especially of various national and international studies that have been developed regarding service and customer satisfaction. The results show that heavy use of technology does not mean a general improvement in performance in all dimensions assessed and some dimensions choices to be made over others
Maximizing the benefits of ERP Systems
The ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems have been consolidated in companies with different sizes and sectors, allowing their real benefits to be definitively evaluated. In this study, several interactions have been studied in different phases, such as the strategic priorities and strategic planning defined as ERP Strategy; business processes review and the ERP selection in the pre-implementation phase, the project management and ERP adaptation in the implementation phase, as well as the ERP revision and integration efforts in the post-implementation phase. Through rigorous use of case study methodology, this research led to developing and to testing a framework for maximizing the benefits of the ERP systems, and seeks to contribute for the generation of ERP initiatives to optimize their performance.Los sistemas de Planificación de los Recursos Empresariales, ERP (Enterprise Resources Planning) se van consolidando en las empresas de diferentes tamaños y sectores, permitiendo que sus beneficios reales puedan ser definitivamente evaluados. En el presente estudio, varias interacciones han sido objeto de estudio en las distintas fases definidas, como las prioridades estratégicas y la planificación estratégica en la Estrategia ERP, la revisión de los procesos de negocio, y la selección del ERP en la fase de pre-implantación, las gestión de proyecto y la adaptación del ERP en la fase de implantación, así como la revisión del ERP, y los esfuerzos de integración en la fase de post implantación. A través del empleo de una metodología rigurosa de estudio de casos, el presente trabajo permitió elaborar y contrastar un modelo conceptual de maximización de los beneficios de los sistemas ERP y pretende ser una contribución para la generación de estrategias de iniciativas, que permitan optimizar su rendimiento
R&D entities and strategic tracking systems: an analysis of the methodologies used
Este trabalho tem como principais objetivos: avaliar o sistema de avaliação de desempenho estratégico utilizado pelas entidades de pesquisa; estudar quais as metodologias de análise de desempenho estratégico são mais utilizadas; saber como são realizadas as integrações entre o sistema de mensuração de desempenho e os objetivos estratégicos. A amostra é constituída por seis entidades de pesquisa da região de Campinas - São Paulo e o referencial teórico utilizado são os sistemas de medição de desempenho estratégico com destaque para o Tableau de Bord, o modelo de Sink e Tuttle e o Balanced Scorecard de Kaplan e Norton. Os resultados obtidos foram objeto de uma análise qualitativa o que permitiu as seguintes considerações: as entidades de pesquisa, em sua maioria, medem e acompanham seus resultados mediante sistemas de monitoração estratégica, com a utilização principalmente de dimensões de cunho qualitativo: pesquisa, desenvolvimento e inovação, satisfação dos clientes - usuários e qualidade de processos e serviços. Dentro dos modelos utilizados pelas entidades, predominam os específicos, os quais, para metade da amostra, estão conceitualmente vinculados aos conteúdos do Balanced Scorecard. A grande carência constatada nesta pesquisa refere-se à falta de integração entre os planos estratégicos e os indicadores de desempenho e entre estes últimos e a organização como um todo.This paper\u27s main purposes are to analyze the research centers strategic performance measurement system; to study what methodologies are more commonly used and to find out how measurement system and strategic goals are integrated. The sample consists of six research centers in Campinas - São Paulo and the theoretical backgrounds used are the strategic performance measurement systems like the Tableau de Bord, the Sink and Tuttle model and the Kaplan and Norton\u27s Balanced Scorecard. The research results were subject to qualitative analysis leading to the following considerations: research centers measure, assess and monitor their results with strategic drivers systems mainly through qualitative dimensions such as research, development and innovation, customer satisfaction - users and services and processes quality. Among the systems used, the specific ones prevail and half of them are conceptually linked with the Balanced Scorecard content. The final research results demonstrate great lack of integration between the strategic plans and the performance indicators as well as lack of integration between the performance indicators and the organization as a whole
The predictors of success for e-learning in higher education institutions (HEIs) in N-W.F.P, Pakistan
The interrelationships between different perceptions and attitudes of e-Learning users are widely researched, which reveals that whatever the perception and theory of a user about the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and e-Learning environment are, the same is reflected in his/her attitude towards using educational technologies for teaching and learning. The objective of this study was to measure the relationships between the indicators (perceptions about ICTs, educational technologies, development and use of e-Learning) and the Criterion variables (problems, satisfaction and prospects) among e-Learning users in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) of N-W.F.P, Pakistan. The study found the existence of strong relationships in terms of indicators explaining the dependent variables. However, the impact is different from one variable to another. 81% of Problems, 57% of Satisfaction and 23% of Prospects are explained by the Indicators. Problems are significantly explained by all four indicators, while Satisfaction has been predicted by three of the indicators (excluding Perceptions). The study found that only two indicators (Perceptions about ICTs and Educational technologies) predict the Prospects, while Development and Use do not. The surprising finding is that Prospects are not defined by the \u27Existing Development and Use Practices\u27. Rather, their perceptions about ICTs and e-Learning tools strongly forecast the Prospects
Comparative analysis of innovation aspect evidence in construction and multi-sector companies
O estudo objetiva fazer análise comparativa da evidenciação de aspectos de inovações entre empresas construtoras e multisetoriais. Realizou-se pesquisa descritiva, por meio de análise de conteúdo nos relatórios da administração do período de 2005 a 2007. Da literatura pesquisada extraíram-se 14 aspectos de inovações, que formaram o quadro de referência da análise de conteúdo. Constituíram-se duas amostras não-probabilísticas, a primeira composta de 22 empresas multisetoriais, de 18 setores econômicos, que compreende as empresas de comparação. Os aspectos de inovações constatados nesse grupo de empresas foram comparados àqueles evidenciados nos relatórios da administração das 34 empresas construtoras de capital aberto, que compreendem a segunda amostra. Os resultados da pesquisa mostram que a evidenciação de aspectos de inovações difere nas empresas de construção civil comparativamente as empresas multisetoriais nos relatórios da administração de 2005, 2006 e 2007. As empresas de construção evidenciaram menos aspectos de inovações nos relatórios da administração do que as empresas multisetoriais no período analisado. Conclui-se que as empresas construtoras podem ser consideradas medianamente inovadoras, conquanto, as empresas multisetoriais apresentam maiores quantidades médias de inovações.The goal of this study is to make a comparative analysis of innovation aspect evidence among construction and multi-sector companies. Descriptive research was done through a content analysis of administration reports from 2005 to 2007. From the researched material, 14 aspects of innovations were extracted, which offer the basis to the content analysis. Two non-probability samples were developed, the first consisting of 22 multi-sector businesses, within 18 economic sectors, which comprises the companies in the comparison. Aspects of innovation found in this group of companies were compared to those stated in the reports of the administration of the 34 construction companies with open capital, which comprise the second sample. The survey results show that the evidence of innovation aspects are different in construction companies when compared to the administration reports of multi-sector business of 2005, 2006 and 2007. The construction companies state fewer innovation aspects in the administration reports than multisector companies in the analyzed period. The conclusion is that while construction companies can be considered fairly innovative, multi-sectorial companies present more innovations on average
Expanding the open innovation concept: the case of TOTVS S / A
The aim of this study is the process of open innovation in the growth development of a technology-based company. We used the case study method to research Totvs, a company that is the largest producer of information systems in Latin America, for medium and small businesses, as an illustrative case to support the evidences of new approaches to implement the open innovation processes. The main conclusions regarding the expansion of the open innovation concept can be seen taking the following distinct factors into account: (a) technological dominion, not business protection, is the main motivator for acquisition of external technologies, directly or through other enterprises acquisition, (b) adherence to technological footprint is the main inducer of the open innovation processes, (c) market pull technologies determines the length and range of technological dominion, and (d) incremental instead of radical type of innovation would be the preferred way to implement the open innovation process

Adoption of technological innovations in the field of health: a study on information systems in the perspective of the theory of diffusion
Com este estudo, identificaram-se fatores que contribuem para a adoção de uma Inovação Tecnológica (Sistemas de Informação) na área de Saúde e como os vários grupos internos atuam na adoção (e uso) ou rejeição de uma inovação tecnológica. Estudaram-se o Prontuário Eletrônico em um Pronto-Socorro Infantil e um Sistema de Apoio ao Ensino pela WEB em uma Faculdade de Medicina. Foram realizadas duas pesquisas de campo de caráter qualitativo, adotando-se técnica de natureza exploratória, por meio de entrevistas em profundidade com os principais gestores e usuários-chave que influenciam a adoção da inovação. Os resultados obtidos indicam que, dentre outros, os canais utilizados para divulgação da inovação, a atuação de agentes promotores de mudança e o preparo para a mudança são aspectos determinantes na adoção de sistemas de informação na área de Saúde.This paper identifies some factors which contribute for the adoption of a Technological Innovation (Systems of Information) in the health area and also identifies the way some internal groups are acting towards the adoption (and use) or rejection of a technological innovation. It has researched into an Electronic Patient Record system in an Emergency Ward and a Teaching Support System by Web in a Medicine College. Two pieces of field qualitative research have been carried out through adopting the technique of exploratory nature, conducted by interviews-in-depth with the main managers and key-users which influence the adoption of the innovation. The research outcome indicates (among other aspects), that the channels used for spreading innovation, for spreading the performance of change providers agents and the preparation for change are aspects that definitely determine the adoption of information systems in the health area
Monitoring environmental liabilities with support of the technology and information system
Este artigo apresenta uma estrutura de software de monitoramento socioambiental para diagnóstico das organizações em termos de sustentabilidade. Este sistema está alicerçado em uma base de dados de indicadores de desenvolvimento socioambiental, concebida como resultado de pesquisa empírica, desenvolvida pelo método da grounded theory. Tais indicadores, além de refletir o estágio de sustentabilidade em que se encontra a empresa analisada, subsidiam o mapeamento socioambiental dos diferentes segmentos econômicos do universo empresarial brasileiro. A arquitetura, estruturada com o suporte dos recentes recursos das tecnologias da informação, possibilitará o desenvolvimento de programas de um sistema informatizado, sob medida, para cada tipo de empresa, para suporte às decisões inerentes à gestão sustentável de sua cadeia produtiva. Como resultados destacam-se a concepção de software para suporte às decisões socioambientais e de um mapa de sustentabilidade das organizações.This manuscript presents a software framework for social and environmental monitoring for diagnosis of organizations in terms of sustainability. This system is based on a database of indicators of social and environmental development, conceived as a result of empirical research, developed by the grounded theory method. These indicators in addition to reflecting the stage of sustainability in which the analyzed company is found, they also signalize the mapping of the different social and environmental economics segments of the Brazilian business. The architecture, structured with the support of the latest features of information technology, allow the development of programs of a computer system, exactly for each type of company to support the decisions taken on the sustainable management of their production chain. As results, we can highlight the development of a design software to support social and environmental decisions and of a company sustainability map
