Revisiting Retro Technology to Extend Educational Opportunity to Teachers in Remote Schools
OUM is constantly looking for new initiatives and mode of learning to enable every one to have access to education regardless of their geographical locations, cultural backgrounds and technological infrastructures. Having served the ‘pedalaman’ (remote) students OUM understands their needs and constraints when it comes to ODL. Current ODL depends largely on the more advance mode and technology to deliver content and enrich its learning and teaching processes. Its access and coverage are heavily dependent on extensive technological infrastructure available only in certain areas. In this case the availability of internet connection is crucial for the success of the ODL. Taking this constraint as a challenge to provide ‘education for all’, The Faculty of Education (FEL) has decided to search for a new mode to run its ODL to enable students in the ‘pedalaman’ to enjoy the same privileges as their colleagues in the urban and sub-urban areas. Finite Element Computation for Solving Pulsatile Blood Flow: Relevance in Assessing the Flow Dynamics in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms
The objective of this paper is to present the mixed velocity-pressure (v-p) finite element
method that solves the pulsatile blood flow in arteries. The solution exploits the Galerkin
method and the fully implicit incremental-iterative procedure for the three-dimensional
nonlinear finite element equations. This methodology is applied to model biological flows
that are important in predicting growth and rupture risks in abdominal aortic aneurysms
(AAA). The numerical technique was validated with the analytical solution of the
Womersley model. Next, a physiologically realistic pulsatile blood flow waveform was
imposed onto the idealized cylindrical arterial model and solved as a benchmark problem.
The model represents a healthy abdominal aorta.This pulsatile condition simulates an in
vivo aorta at rest. The numerical results were used to quantify clinically relevant flow
dynamics that play a significant role in today’s field of medical treatment planning and
development of predictive methods via computational modelling for assessing common
clinical problems such as AAAs. (Authors' abstract

Learning Object And Mobile Persuasion For At Risk Learners In An ODL Environment
This conceptual paper describes the teaching and learning of technical subjects based on the learning objects and mobile persuasion. Learning object is popular due to its potential reusability that will save cost of development, especially for online learning. While most of the research on learning object looks at the reusability and interoperability for economical reasons, this paper will focus on the development and design instruction for learning objects, as a small component that will support the learning process of at-risk learners in an open and distance learning environment. While mobile persuasion, based on the Short Messaging Services (SMS) technology, will focus on how to motivate the at-risk learners to be self-directed learners. This paper will outline the design of learning objects and mobile persuasion for at-risk learners. The research outcome is expected to help and support at-risk learners to improve their academic performance. (Abstract by authors
Leadership behaviour and practices of a Head Teacher in an excellent school
The purpose of this study is to explore the behaviours and practices of a head teacher in
an excellent school. This study also intends to find out the leadership behaviours and practices
of the head teacher that contribute towards the excellent academic and co-curricular
achievements and how the excellent results are consistently maintained year after year.
Additionally, this study also hopes to explore the head teacher’s administrative style in the
school. The qualitative research framework was adopted to gain an understanding of the head
teacher’s leadership behaviour and practices. The research design was a single case study,
where data was collected through interviews, observations and document analysis. The
school under study scored more than ninety percent passes in the UPSR examination, sports
and co-curricular champions at the zone and district level besides being free of any discipline
problems. The subject in this study was the head teacher of the school while the key
informants comprised five teachers, two support staff and two parents from the school.
Transcriptions of the interviews and field notes were made immediately after each interview
and observation. The findings of the study revealed that the vision of the head teacher was
paramount for school excellence; teaching of the curriculum was top priority; programmes for
individual pupils’ indifferences were implemented; collaborative leadership practiced in the
administration and most major decisions regarding academic or non academic were made in
consensus with the staff. The findings of the study also revealed various implications such as
the importance of effective managerial skills used in executing instructional tasks as well as
implementing effective academic, co-curricular and discipline programmes for school

Empowering teachers through capacity building and professional development : a collaborative effort
Teacher training and capacity building are important development imperatives for many nations including Malaysia. With the view to upgrade the teachers’ academic qualifications, the Ministry of Education (MOE) takes a serious stand in the issue of teacher quality and upgrading by introducing the Special Degree Programme for Non-Graduate and In-Service Teachers. Open University Malaysia (OUM) has been chosen to be the partner in this programme, under which the university has successfully produced about 11,200 graduate teachers during the last eight years. This paper illustrates the salient features of the OUM-MOE collaboration that was, from the outset, strategically planned on the basic need to achieve quality education for the teaching profession. Thus, all aspects of the delivery system have been tailored towards this important imperative which includes the adoption of OUM’s blended pedagogy.
It is also in this context that the leveraging on information and communication technology (ICT), via OUM’s Learning Management System (myLMS), e-learning, iRadio and digital library, has become a significant component of the teaching and learning process. This paper will thus highlight how open and distance learning (ODL), through its flexibility and accessibility, has been able to benefit training and education as well as enable MOE to save substantial costs on every teacher trained. To ensure the success of this OUM-MOE collaborative effort, the university gives emphasis on the principal objective of this enterprise so as to instil professionalism, commitment, good ethics and quality awareness in teachers, thus contributing to the enhancement of the country’s education sector
