QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN AND DATA ANALYSIS: AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH IN STUDENT EVALUATION OF TEACHING (SET)
Student evaluation of teaching (SET) has been widely used in institutions of learning to assess teaching effectiveness. However, most of the SET questionnaires are designed by "experts" without taking students' view into consideration. Besides that, the traditional approach in SET analysis is to obtain a global rating as a measurement of teaching effectiveness based on the average or mean scores of the items of SET. This paper identifies the weaknesses of the traditional approach in SET questionnaire development and data analysis. It then describes an alternative approach to SET items development which involved students- collaboration. The paper also describes the establishment of various scoring matrices for the measurement of overall teaching effectiveness as well as teaching effectiveness from three different domains, namely: knowledge, pedagogical skills and attitude. The future value of collaborative online learning ( COL ) for ODL
COL described here is the online interaction between students who are prompted to
discuss course-related items for their team assignments. They will be rewarded by marks
for doing so. Alongside with traditional examinations, we consider this kind of progressive
Collaborative Online Learning (COL) equally as the most important evaluation factor
within an open distant learning university of the future. However, the usage of this kind of
learning is still at a stage of infancy. Subsequently, the commitment to make proper use
of it will be derived from a state-of-the-art definition that links back to the bind spot also of
the most recent international publications on COL.
A. In the first part, this paper focuses on progressive COL by a cluster content analysis.
We will ask how many of the current undergraduate programmes at Open University
Malaysia are utilizing this idea. As a result, based upon the previous definition, it is stated
that there is basically NO progressive COL which is triggered by the tutors in charge.
B. Subsequently, the paper would like to elaborate on the slumbering potential that lies
in COL. The authors suggest that it is not only an eminent tool for the students to
rehearse for real-life virtual teams, but it is deemed as one of the most efficient
consequences of modern online learning at all.
C. Thereupon, in the third part, a catalogue of tailor-made recommendations for
progressive COL will be derived
a) Entailing the steps of how the usage of COL could be improved.
b) Comprising of a catalogue is thrown out which proposes a future
tutor evaluation checklist.
c) It will conclude in practical ideas of benchmarking how to trigger
COL among tutors in charge
Design and Development of Problem-Base Asynchronous Collaborative Learning
This paper describes the initial stages of designing
and developing Problem-Base Learning (PBL) in
engineering education via asynchronous collaborative
learning (ACL) at Open University Malaysia (OUM).
PBL development is aim at developing total integrated
approach to the learning system to induce active self-
managed learning and online forum participation among
learners. PBL approach is vital for open universities as
self-managed learning dominate the learning mode. This
paper will elaborate on the OUM learning system in
teaching engineering education and suggest new
approach of designing the curriculum based on PBL to
encourage student-centred learning through ACL via
Learning Management System (myLMS) platform of
OUM. (Authors' abstract
Empowerment, job satisfaction and organizational commitment: a comparative analysis of nurses working in Malaysia and England
Aims To examine the relationships between nurses empowerment, job satisfaction
and organizational commitment in culturally and developmentally different societies.
Background Employment and retention of sufficient and well-committed nursing
staff are essential for providing safe and effective health care. In light of this, nursing
leaders have been searching for ways to re-engineer the healthcare system particularly
by providing an environment that is conducive to staff empowerment, job
satisfaction and commitment.
Methods This is a descriptive correlational survey of 556 registered nurses (RNs) in
two teaching hospitals in England and Malaysia.
Results Although the Malaysian nurses felt more empowered and committed to
their organization, the English nurses were more satisfied with their job.
Conclusion The differences between these two groups of nurses show that
empowerment does not generate the same results in all countries, and reflects
empirical evidence from most cross cultural studies on empowerment.
Implications for nursing management Nursing management should always take into
consideration cultural differences in empowerment, job satisfaction and commitment
of nursing staff while formulating staff policies
Enhancing students’ academic performance in Malaysian online distance learning institutions
The increasing number of learner failure rates are alarming in online distance learning. Previous studies have identified the factors that have contributed to online distance learning students’ failure as lack of time and lack of motivation. The purpose of this study is to develop a direct effect understanding of extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy and time management on students’ academic performance in an online distance learning institution in Malaysia. The Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used to analyse the casual relationships between independent variables and dependent variables. The model was developed and later tested by adopting the Partial Least Square (PLS) procedure on data collected from a survey that yielded 210 usable questionnaires. The findings showed that extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy and time management have a significant and positive influence on students’ academic performance in an online distance learning institution. The findings imply that the relationship amongst extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy and time management on a student’s academic performance in an online distance learning institution will lead to the online distance learning institution’s low attrition rate. This study uses SmartPLS 2.0 and SPSS 18.0 to test the hypothesis and analyse respondents’ profile, respectively
Factors Associated With Job Satisfaction Among Degree Nurses Working In Clinical Areas At Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kelantan
The purpose of this quantitative study is to identify factors affecting job satisfaction among sixty six degree nurses working in clinical area at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. The six components examined were pay, autonomy, task requirements, professional status, interaction and organization policies. Pay component was ranked as least satisfying followed by organizational policies, task requirements, autonomy, interaction, with professional status as most satisfying component. The range of score for this study was 105 to 178 with average total score of 139. These figures show low levels of satisfaction among the nurses. Correlation between duration of working hours after getting their degrees and job satisfaction indicated negative but significant relationship between two variables; respondents with increasing years work experience as a degree holder became less satisfied with their job. There were significant differences in job satisfaction between nurses on shift duty as opposed to those working in the office hours, and between those working in critical versus non-critical areas. However, there were neither significant associations nor differences found for other demographic variables. This study presented findings that are essential for healthcare and nursing administrators to initiate interventions based on evidence with regards to the plight of degree nurses in their opportunities for upgrading themselves
Teachers as Facilitators Integrating Social Network Technology into a 21st Century Classroom in an International School in Kuala Lumpur
The objective of this study is to comprehend how teachers prepare their
students for 21st-century learning using social networking technology. Data in
this research was collected through observations and interviews. The
interviews were structured and comprised open-ended questions. The data
was analysed using qualitative methods. Six teachers from an international
school in Kuala Lumpur were interviewed in this research: two teachers from
its kindergarten, two teachers from its junior school, and two teachers from its
senior school. The findings showed that the teachers had integrated social
network technology in creating a 21st-century classroom. The use of
technology helped them to transform teaching in their classrooms. It helped
them to prepare their students for the global digital transformation taking place
at present. Integrating social network with 21st-century learning in the
classroom benefited both the teachers and students. Most of the social network
applications are easy to use. Once a week, the teachers attended technical
professional development training organised by information technology
specialists and technicians to upgrade their skills and learn to use the latest
devices and applications in order to support the transformation of their role
towards learner-centred 21st-century learning. (Abstract by authors
