Meeting the Needs of the App Generation: OUM Virtual Store
This paper highlights the need to look into setting up a Virtual Store to house the University’s
teaching and learning materials. As the leading ODL provider in the country, Open University
Malaysia (OUM) has been producing a wide range of learning materials ever since it was first
established in 2001, ranging from print modules to technology-enhanced learning materials such
as web-based modules, iLectures, iTutorials and iRadio broadcasts. However, while much
thought has been put into the development of the learning materials, less has been paid to the
issue of storage. This paper presents the case for setting up a Virtual Store utilizing the App
environment. The App platform is trendy and popular with the younger and more tech-savvy
generation. It is also easy to use, cheap, flexible, and engaging. As such, setting up the OUM
Virtual Store via the App platform would not only be practical but also serve to enhance the
University’s image. Collaboration with professional App developers is recommended to facilitate
the transfer of technology. However, it is imperative that the University be an integral part of the
development team for quality control and intellectual property rights issue purposes. The paper
also recommends that the Virtual Store embeds a special functionality to host Open Educational
Resources (OER) so that users can choose to purchase-and-view selected learning resources, or

Quality Framework for Assessment of Multimedia Learning Materials Version 1.0
This paper reports about an instrument which has been developed by the Commonwealth of Learning Media Centre
for Asia (CEMCA) and the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia (MOHE). This instrument aims to be a standard
quality framework which can be used by multimedia users in evaluating the quality of the e-learning materials.
Basically, the instrument is constructed to evaluate two sections, which are the learning material development process

The impact of delayed instructional support on adult learners in the ODL context
This paper investigated whether productive failure (PF) as an instructional strategy boosts
students’ understanding on the subject matter in a face-to-face tutorial. PF instructional design
advocates the delaying of support for the learners during the learning. This paper reports an
initial study of a quasi-experimental that compares a ‘‘productive failure’’ instructional design
with a traditional ‘‘lecture and practice’’ instructional design for a 2-hour tutorial session
attended by adult learners. A total of 17 adult learners participated in the study. Learners
experienced either a traditional lecture and practice teaching cycle or a PF cycle, where they
solved complex problems in small groups without the provision of any support or scaffolds up
until a consolidation lecture by their teacher during the last hour of the tutorial. Findings suggest
that learners from the PF condition produced a variety of problem models and methods for
solving the problems but were unsuccessful in their efforts, be it in groups or individually. Despite
failing in their group and individual problem-solving efforts, learners from the PF condition
performed better than their counterparts from the lecture and practice condition on both
knowledge and higher order application problems based on the post-test. (Abstract by authors
Application of Six Sigma Approach in Predicting Functional Defects for System Testing
The importance of knowing total number of
defects to be found at the start of system testing phase
has become significant element in software engineering
practices towards achieving zero known post release
defects of the software released to users. Defect
prediction for testing demonstrates the initiative for test
process improvement and optimization while allowing
independent testing team to discover as many defects as
possible, to determine when to stop testing, put
comprehensive test coverage while ensuring all defects
are contained within testing phase. The research aims at
demonstrating the industry-centric approach of
predicting defects and controlling them within system
testing to prevent any escapees to the next testing level
and later, to the end users. Despite various prior efforts
and approaches in building defect prediction models, this
research attempts to focus on formulating a
mathematical model for specifically predicting functional
test defects to be found in system testing phase before it is
actually started. Six Sigma is chosen as the approach in
building up the mathematical model for predicting
functional defects in system testing phase. Design for Six
Sigma (DFSS), one of the Six Sigma methodologies is
used for the research where it involves 5 main phases:
Define, Measure, Analyze, Design and Verify (DMADV).
The study illustrates the motivation on having this
prediction model and its benefits to test process
management. V-Model software development process is
the area of focus in which the software projects adopting
this model are selected for the research. The activities
start with the analysis of factors narrowing to phases
prior to testing phase that have direct impact to the
discovery of defect in system testing. These factors are
concerned with the product and process metrics collected
from requirement phase until construction and unit test
phase. The metrics in those phases which are significant
to system testing defects are collected and analyzed
statistically using multiple regression analysis. The
proposed prediction model for functional defects in
system testing phase is formulated using the best result
generated from the regression analysis, which is a
combined metrics of development and testing metrics in
phases prior to testing phase. The proposed model is then
validated to ensure it is fit for actual implementation of
predicting functional defects in system testing phase.
Control plan is also incorporated as a reference on what
action to be taken when the actual functional defects
found do not fall within the prediction interval. (Abstract by authors
SIMULATION OF KORTEWEG DE VRIES EQUATION
Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation has been used as a mathematical model of shallow water
waves. In this paper, we present one-, two-, and three-soliton solution of KdV equation. By
definition, soliton is a nonlinear wave that maintains its properties (shape and velocity) upon
interaction with each other. In order to investigate the behavior of soliton solutions of KdV
equation and the interaction process of the two- and three-solitons, computer programs have been
successfully simulated. Results from these simulations confirm that the solutions of KdV equation
obtained are the soliton solutions. (Abstract by authors
New Learners’ Experiences in Using e-Learning Technology in the Open University Malaysia
As an attempt to reduce the high attrition rate among its new students,
Open University Malaysia (OUM) has been encouraging learners to
use e-learning technology and digital learning materials for their studies
and interaction with the university’s academic staff. This paper reports
the findings of a study that examined new learners’ experiences at
OUM in using e-learning technology and digital learning materials. The
study was based on 438 usable questionnaires completed by a random
sample of new learners. The constructs used include perceived
usefulness, perceived ease of use, computer self-efficacy and anxiety.
The study found that new learners at OUM were generally receptive
towards e-learning technology and digital learning materials. Usage of
mobile devices for downloading study materials such as HTML
modules, i-Lectures and i-Radio learning segments ranged from high
for laptops and mobile phones to moderate for MP3 and MP4 players
to low for tablet computers. There is no significant difference in elearning
technology usage between older and younger cohorts. An
interesting finding of the study was that perceived usefulness was the
only significant factor influencing the use of technology while other
factors including attitude were not. Finally, the study found that there
are significant barriers to e-learning usage, principal among them are
technology and academic support, time, and accessibility. [ABSTRACT BY AUTHORS
The Role of NGO in Promoting Life Long Learning for Person with Visually Impaired and Blindness
The main focus of this paper is to examine how the life long learning take-place through NGO such as
Society of the Blind in Malaysia (SBM). Therefore, the aims and objectives of this paper are as follow:
1. To discuss the roles of NGO in the work of life-long learning among the blind and visually
impaired community.
2. To share the current practice of NGO serving the blind and visually impaired in life long learning.
3. To identify and report on how the blind and visually impaired can achieved economy
empowerment through life long learning
Open and distance learning as the key driver of lifelong learning
The launching of the Blueprint on Enculturation of Lifelong Learning Malaysia: 2011-2020 marked a
significant milestone in the country’s efforts to achieve its aim of becoming a high income nation by
2020. The effective implementation of the Blueprint requires the commitment of all stakeholders.
Providers of lifelong learning (LLL) must have the necessary capabilities to drive LLL and gain the
confidence of the general public to engage in LLL. This paper propagates that the Open and Distance
Learning (ODL) with its attendant characteristics, is the way forward in driving LLL in Malaysia.
The unique features of the ODL are discussed in the context of its major processes such as:
Curriculum Design; Teaching and Learning; Assessment System; Facilities and Infrastructure;
