Fuzzy Available-to-Promise System Modelling Under Supplier Uncertainty
Available-To-Promise (ATP) function is an important tool in supply chain management to enhance the responsiveness of order promising and the reliability of order fulfillment. ATP models provide responses to customer order enquiries, based on resource availability, allowing the user to determine whether they should accept the order. Currently, many of the ATP models available adopt a deterministic approach and do not address uncertainties in the manufacturing environment. In this paper, a fuzzy mathematical programming model is proposed to address the problem of order-promising under an environment of supply uncertainty. The model aims to minimize the cost of rejecting orders, failing to meet promised orders and inventory holding cost of the finished products and supply materials. In addition to order promising, the model also performs order-fulfillment and provides a master production schedule of each product and material requirement planning of each supply material over the given planning horizon. To solve the fuzzy mathematical model, an approach based on possibility and necessity theory is applied
Film in contemporary Southeast Asia : cultural interpretation and social intervention
This book discusses contemporary film in all the main countries of Southeast Asia, and the social practices and ideologies which films either represent or oppose. It shows how film acquires signification through cultural interpretation, and how film also serves as a site of contestations between social and political agents seeking to promote, challenge, or erase certain meanings, messages or ideas from public circulation. A unique feature of the book is that it focuses as much on films as it does on the societies from which these films emerge: it considers the reasons for film-makers taking the positions they take; the positions and counter-positions taken; the response of different communities; and the extent to which these interventions are connected to global flows of culture and capital.
The wide range of subjects covered include documentaries as political interventions in Singapore; political film-makers’ collectives in the Philippines, and films about prostitution in Cambodia and patriotism in Malaysia, and the Chinese in Indonesia. The book analyses films from Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines, across a broad range of productions – such as mainstream and independent features across genres (for example comedy, patriotic, political, historical genres) alongside documentary, classic and diasporic films. Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Training Program Using the Four Level Kirkpatrick Model in the Banking Sector in Malaysia
Employee training and development are becoming an increasingly important function of HRM as they
help organizations to enhance human capital and compete in a rapidly changing business world. Millions
of USDs have been spent on employee training programs and it is a challenge for the HR department to
justify each USD invested. This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of employee training programs
in the banking sector in Malaysia. Using the Kirkpatrick’s four levels of evaluation model, this paper
specifically examines: (i) the reactions of the employees to the training programs; (ii) the level of
employee’s learning; and (iii) the employee’s transfer of training. A sample of 36 employees who attended
the Intermediate Central Banking Course was selected through the stratified sampling method. Training
feedback questionnaires, pre and post tests, face-to-face interviews, learner development plan reports
and behavioral surveys were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the training. The study revealed that
the training conducted had resulted in evidence to three of the four levels of Kirkpatrick’s model. The
reactions to the training received on average 4 of the 5-point Likert scale. Pre and post test to determine
learning resulted in an average increase in knowledge of 11.4 percent. The results for employee
performance revealed overall positive feedback on the face-to-face interviews and behavioral surveys
conducted as well as about 68 percent indication of transfer of training to the workplace. The findings
therefore, help the HR department to furnish evidence to the organization, as well as stakeholders and
continue to make employee training and development a strategic management agenda. (Abstract by authors
A case study : constraint faced by Open and Distance learners
Malaysia aims to achieve zero illiteracy rates by the year 2020 and hence the concept of open and
distance learning (ODL) as well as lifelong learning (LLL) were introduced in the Malaysian
education system. Open University Malaysia (OUM) is the first ODL institution in Malaysia. Other
than that, OUM was given the head start with the implementation of the flexible entry (FE) in
Malaysia after the Ministry of Higher Education has create the way for greater access into the
Malaysian higher education and lifelong learning opportunities in year 2006. The concept of ODL
was well-received by the public. As at Jan 2012, OUM has approximately 107,000 cumulative
learners in the system. Nevertheless, most ODL learners faced much difficulties and constraints in
their quest to pursue their tertiary education eg. time management, motivation, basic knowledge etc.
This paper discusses the challenges and difficulties faced by the ODL learners in Negeri Sembilan
Learning Centre, Open University Malaysia. The data for the paper is collected using paper-andpencil
survey and the results are generated using descriptive analysis. The discussions of this paper
will be able to give an insight to the administrator in determining the ways to assist these learners
and hence would be able to provide a better teaching-learning for ODL learners. It is found that the
three main problems faced by ODL learners is the preparation of assignment and test, English
language proficiency and time management. (Abstract by authors
The needs analysis of learning higher order thinking skills for generating ideas
Generating of idea is thinking skills activity which require high level of creative thinking and actions. Hence, the purpose of this
research was to analyse the needs of learning higher order thinking skills for generating ideas among technical students based on
the opinions of academic staffs. The findings indicated that deadlock of ideas is the most important factor in the difficulty in
generating ideas among these students. The difficulty of generating ideas is a key factor in affecting the achievements of the
students’ assignments. Thus, students need to learn higher order thinking skills to address the difficulty in generating ideas
The development and evaluation of the qualities of buzan mind mapping module
Using self-instructional module can be an alternative approach and make significant contributions to overcome note taking
problem among students. Thus, the purpose of this research is to develop and evaluate the qualities of Buzan Mind Mapping
module. The development of the Buzan Mind Mapping module was based on Meyer Model. Analysis on the qualities’ evaluation
revealed that eight raters showed an agreement on satisfactory level and above for all 34 items. Meanwhile, 36 students gave
positive feedbacks on the format and content of the module except the size of the module. (Abstract by authors

Does Mobile Learning Foster Self-Directed Learning?
With the ever-evolving educational technology trends, distance learning is
now able to provide tremendous opportunities of learning that were barely possible
before. Despite that, distance education institutions are still continuing the battle with
one of their most challenging issue, which is high learner dropout. There is a notion
that learners will be more successful and less prone to dropout when their learning is
self-directed (Uba, 1997). Recently, research showed that mobile learning encouraged
learners to be self-directed and there was a substantial decline in dropouts (Attewell,
Savill-Smith, Douch, 2009). This paper is a further effort to investigate the potential of
mobile learning to support self-directed learning and aims to highlight the effect of
mobile learning using short messaging services (SMS) on learners’ self-direction for
learning. In the study, SMS text messages were sent to mobile phones of science
teachers who were undertaking the Bachelor of Teaching Program at Open University
Malaysia. Data was collected using survey questionnaire as well as interview method
whereby 35 participants responded to the questionnaire and two were interviewed. The
assessment of self-directed learning was based on the theories of self-directed learning
suggested by Brockett and Hiemstra (1991) and Candy (1991). The findings show how
learners exhibited ownership of learning due to mobile learning through their goals and
plans for learning, strategies and processes of learning and self-evaluation of their
learning. The study also discusses issues that these teachers faced when using mobile
technologies for self-directed learning. (Abstract by authors
