Effect of Andragogical Approach on the Academic Performance of Psychology Learners in Open University Malaysia (OUM)
No full textThe study is attempts to investigate the effectiveness of andragogical approach employed by tutors on academic achievement of adult learners. The objective of the study is to measure if there are any significant differences in the learners ‘academic performances due to the individual capability in delivering the subject content. The study is analysed by an independent- samples t-test which conducted to compare learners score on the subject. This study initiated to compare the consequence of content delivery by two different background tutors. The samples chosen for this study are the second-year undergraduates for the subject Abnormal Psychology in Open University Malaysia (OUM). The sample size consisted of 48 learners who were randomly assigned to experimental group and control group, each consisting of 24 learners. The two tutors chosen for this study are, a tutor of andragogical approach (Tutor A) who completed the nine modules of Postgraduate Certificate in Open and Distance Learning (PGCert ODL) which involve a total of 400 learning hours preparing her for effective andragogical teaching skills for adult learners. The Tutor A is consigned as experimental group, while Tutor B is assigned to be in control group and was teaching the subject for the past 7 years without any certificate in teaching in open and distance learning skills. At the end of the semester, both groups were tested with a set of subjective tests to measure their understanding and knowledge of the subject. The findings showed that there was a significant difference in the scores for experimental group (M=57.17, SD= 14.12) and control group (37.92,SD=10.35), t (23)=9.25, p= 0.001.These results provided evidence that learners taught by andragogical approach consumed by Tutor A showed better score as compared to the control group. The vital outcome of the study is that a tutor with familiarity and trained in teaching in open and distance learning extent would be able to deliver the content effectively. It is proven that steps taken by OUM to progress internal academics had given a rewarding outcome in terms of learner’s academic achievement
Impact of Discussion Forums on the Final Scores of Post Graduate Students at Open University Malaysia
Get PDFAt Open University Malaysia (OUM), online discussions serve as a bridge
between the face-to-face and virtual lessons. However, for the Master of
Instructional Design and Technology (MIDT), the online discussions are
the lifeline of students and facilitators as the discussion forum is a place
where high level asynchronous communications are triggered. As such it is
important to identify such interactions and determine if there is a significant
impact on the final grade achieved by students. In this study, an attempt
was made to analyse the discussion forum using the Ning social
networking site (http://hmid6303.ning.com). A total of 14 students enrolled
for the fully online MIDT course offered by OUM. The findings from
normality test results (Shapiro-Wilk) indicate that the forum scores were
normally distributed (significance value >0.05) and final score shows some
deviation from normality (significance value <0.05). (Abstract by authors
Faktor tekanan kerja dalam kalangan kakitangan MAINS Holding Sdn Bhd - FASS Final Project (Psychology)
Get PDFKajian ini adalah bertujuan untuk melihat perbezaan faktor tekanan kerja
berdasarkan demografi iaitu (jantina, umur, tempoh perkhidmatan dan status
perkahwinan) dalam kalangan kakitangan MAINS Holdings Sdn. Bhd. di Seremban,
Negeri Sembilan. Terdapat enam faktor tekanan yang dikaji iaitu halangan kerja rumah
dan kerja, struktur dan iklim organisasi, peranan pengurusan, kerjaya dan pencapaian,
hubungan di tempat kerja dan faktor instrinsik dalam pekerjaan. Alat kajian yang
digunakan ialah Occupational Stress Indicator (OSI) oleh Cooper, C.L, Sloan, D &
William, S.P (1988). Seramai 40 orang kakitangan telah dipilih sebagai responden bagi
mewakili populasi. Data yang diperolehi dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif
(min, kekerapan dan peratus) dan statistik inferensi menggunakan (Ujian-t dan ANOVA
sehala). Dapatan kajian menunjukkan min bagi faktor tekanan yang tertinggi ialah
faktor struktur dan iklim organisasi. Manakala faktor tekanan yang terendah ialah faktor
halangan kerja rumah dan kerja. Hasil kajian juga menunjukkan bahawa terdapat
perbezaan yang signifikan pada faktor tekanan dalam kalangan responden dari aspek
umur. Kajian mendapati kakitangan berumur lingkungan 26-35 tahun mengalami
tekanan kerja. Manakala faktor tekanan kerja mengikut jantina, tempoh perkhidmatan
dan status perkahwinan didapati tidak terdapat perbezaan yang signifikan dalam
kalangan responden. Penyelidik mencadangkan agar pihak pengurusan mengambil
langkah lebih proaktif dengan memberikan pendedahan melalui pelbagai kursus dan
latihan yang bersesuaian secara konsisten terutamanya latihan kemahiran pengurusan
tekanan kerja kepada kakitangan bagi melahirkan kakitangan yang produktif dan

Get PDFOpen and flexible distance education (OFDE) removes the barriers to quality post-secondary distance education by offering quality programme through flexible delivery system with minimum admission requirements. OFDE also provides opportunity for working adults to seek lifelong education in a flexible manner. In line with the Occupational Safety and Health Master Plan for Malaysia 2015 (OSH-MP 15), Open University Malaysia (OUM) has been on the forefront in spearheading effort to offer Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety Management (BOHSM) with honours and Master of OSH Risk Management (MOSHRM) through OFDE. Although it is quite challenging to offer science and technical related subjects through open and flexible distance learning, OUM has taken a bold step to explore the possibilities. This paper aims to present Open University Malaysia’s experience in the development and delivery of the BOHSM with Honours and MOSHRM through open and flexible distance learning. Quality Assurance in Open and Flexible Distance Learning: A Malaysian Perspective
Get PDFThe urgent drive towards human capital development has often focused on
the role of higher education institutions in providing the knowledge and skills
necessary for economic progress. This growing spotlight on higher education
has been accompanied by an equal concern for quality, especially in an
environment where private higher education, such as through open and
flexible distance learning (OFDL), is becoming increasingly prominent as the
major access point of learning opportunities for the masses, in particular,
working adults who have the greatest potential to contribute to economic
progress. Quality assurance (QA) measures are essential as rapid advances
in information and communication technology (ICT) have significantly
transformed teaching and learning to create a sophisticated, borderless and
global educational environment that has erased various traditional boundaries
in higher education. While this has resulted in many benefits for today’s
learners, it is important to look to QA as a means to maintain standards,
ensure learner satisfaction, ensure accountability and even enhance
institutional image and prestige. Although there are diverse QA approaches
in higher education, a common thread exists where all countries and
institutions aim to provide the best quality education possible. This is
reflected in the gaining importance of benchmarking and best practices as
well as adhering to national and international guidelines that take into
account various aspects of education provision, from course objectives to
curriculum design, monitoring, review, institutional leadership as well as
continuous improvement. This paper will discuss the broad QA approach in
Malaysian higher education, with specific focus to OFDL and open universities.
This paper will also illustrate QA from the perspective of Open University
Malaysia (OUM). As the country’s premier open university, OUM has
employed its own unique approach to QA that will hopefully contribute to a
more well-rounded QA system in Malaysian higher education, specifically in
OFDL; and in general, to potentially create an impact on similar institutions in other countries in the Asian regio
Study of the Effectiveness of the Implementation of Washington Accord in Malaysia's Engineering Undergraduate Programme Using SEM
Get PDFTransformation of engineering undergraduate programs towards global practice of outcomes based accreditation (OBA) entails a huge challenge to universities as there is mounting pressure for infusion of desirable and yet measurable graduate competencies into its offered programs in order to fulfil professional bodies accreditation criteria. Hence, in view of providing a sense of direction to the local engineering education community, Washington Accord (WA) ensures that accredited programmes synonymously mean that its graduates are equipped with 12 professional abilities obtained through an innovative outcomes-based engineering programme. However, further complication unfolds as industries are continuously evolving to meet rapid global demand and practice; hence defining set of competencies that can accurately map attributes outlined by industry with the aim of addressing “skill-gap” will continue to be a challenging endeavour for higher education sector. This paper intends to investigate the effectiveness of the OBA criteria outlined by WA in terms of attainment of graduate attributes which would enable graduates to take on challenging careers in the industry. Hence, the study will focus on identifying the relationship between the five outcome-based accredited criteria and the attainment of twelve graduate attributes outlined by WA in view of producing a conceptual framework which are then tested using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). Get PDFPenggunaan QR-Codes bukanlah satu perkara baru terutama dalam bidang pengiklanan, logistik dan
pengeluaran. Walau bagaimanapun, di negara ini, teknologi ini masih kurang popular dan jarang
digunakan dalam dunia keperpustakaan. Ini agak merugikan kerana kos menghasilkan QR-Codes
boleh dikatakan percuma dan kesannya besar kepada pengguna terutamanya kepada mereka yang
menggunakan peranti mudah-alih (mobile devices) di dalam perpustakaan. Kertas ini membincangkan
tentang kegunaan dan kelebihan QR-Codes di dalam perpustakaan. Pengaplikasian QR-Codes di
Perpustakaan Digital Open University Malaysia (OUM) juga akan dibincangkan. Penggunaan ‘tracking
application’ bagi mendapatkan statistik penggunaan QR-Codes di perpustakaan juga akan dinyatakan
secara ringkas. Akhir sekali, cabaran dalam mengaplikasikan QR-Codes di dalam perpustakaan juga
