The behavioural intention to use video lecture in an ODL institution: insights from learners’ perspective

    No full text
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to gain insight into learners’ behavioural intention to use the video lectures as their learning material. The behavioural intention construct is measured in terms of perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness of video lectures. It is hoped that the findings of this study will provide feedback as to learners’ intention to use as well as guidelines on how to improve the development of video lectures as the university gears to offer more courses in the fully online mode in the near future. Design/methodology/approach - A total sample of 392 questionnaires were collected for this study using technology acceptance model model. Descriptive and inferential statistics are used as the main analytical tool to study the learners’ behavioural intention to use the video lectures as their learning material. The behavioural intention construct is measured in terms of two dimensions: perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness of video lectures. Findings - In conclusion, the findings from this research study seem to suggest that OUM learners have a positive perception of video lectures with reference to the two dimensions of “ease of use” and “usefulness”, where ease of use is concerned, OUM learners rate content relevancy, appropriate language and viewing flexibility as the strongest points of video lectures. The aspects ranked lowest are technical (ability to play the video lecture smoothly from the beginning to the end) as well as objective of usage (video lectures are not rated high as revision material for exam preparation). Research limitations/implications - Future studies can be conducted pertaining to issues on the context in which learning is taking place within higher education, various definitions of video, and ways of categorising and presenting these different types, teaching “with” and “through” video from the perspective of the lecturer and the educational institution, approaches to didactically embedding and integrating video into a course that results in effective learning and the process and support needed by the (traditional) lecturer to create and deploy various types of video content. Originality/value - Over the last ten years, the production of video has gone from a complicated and technical process to one easily done by the general masses. It is now possible for anyone with a mobile phone to make a video recording. The question lies on whether the students have deeper meaning of learning via video lectures and the perception of students on using video lecture as teaching tool in the open and distance learning. Building an Efficient and Effective Test Management System in an ODL Institution

    No full text
Open University Malaysia (OUM) is progressively moving towards implementing assessment on demand and online assessment. This move is deemed necessary for OUM to continue to be the leading provider of flexible learning. OUM serves a very large number of students each semester and these students are vastly distributed throughout the country. As the number of learners keeps growing, the task of managing and administering examinations every semester has become increasingly laborious, time consuming and costly. In trying to deal with this situation and improve the assessment processes, OUM has embarked on the development and employment of a test management system. This test management system is named OUM QBank. The initial objectives of QBank development were aimed at enabling the systematic classification and storage of test items, as well as the auto-generation of test papers based on the required criteria. However, it was later agreed that the QBank should be a more comprehensive test management system that manages not just all assessment items but also includes the features to facilitate quality control and flexibility of use. These include the functionality to perform item analyses and also online examination. This paper identifies the key elements and the important theoretical basis in ensuring the design and development of an effective and efficient system. (Abstract by authors

Kata kunci: Keberkesanan kesatuan; organisasi kesatuan; sikap majikan; jenis kesatuan ABSTRACT Past studies have pointed to the fact that union organisation form a significant relationship with the union effectiveness. However, there has been a paucity of studies on the role of the mediator and moderator among the constructs. In relation to this, this study aims to test the employer attitude as the mediator and the role of the type of union as the moderator among the constructs. A total of 676 respondents who are trade union officials in Selangor and the Federal Territory (Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur) were selected as the subjects in the study, where the selection was made via the stratified random sampling technique. Data were analysed using the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and the structural equation model (SEM) using AMOS 21 program. The path analysis conducted showed that the union effectiveness was significantly influenced by union organisation and employer attitude; employer attitude was significantly influenced by union organisation. However, the results also found that employer attitude and type of union were not the mediator and moderator respectively. This study also discussed the limitations and suggestions for future research. Keywords: Union effectiveness; union organisation; employer attitude; type of unio

Relationship between Leadership Styles and Affective Commitment among Employees in National Anti-Drugs Agency (NADA)

    No full text
Purpose: The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between different leadership styles, specifically Islamic, authentic and transformational leadership with affective commitment in National Anti-Drugs Agency (NADA). Design/Methodology/approach: This study used quantitative research approach and a total of 373 completed samples were collected. The respondents were asked to evaluate their supervisors' leadership styles and their affective commitment towards the agency. Descriptive and regression analysis were conducted and the questionnaire was adapted from past studies. Findings: The results revealed that all the leadership styles if analyzed individually have significant relationships with affective commitment. On the other hand, when multiple regression analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship of the overall three different leadership styles on commitment, the results indicated that the R2 and Beta values denoted a stronger relationship with affective commitment. Practical Implication: This study suggests that if all the leadership styles of transformational, Islamic and authentic leadership were amalgamated the revelation of achieving higher employees' affective commitment will be realized. Thus, managers or leaders who are required to develop effective strategies and competencies should possess all the qualities of the transformational, Islamic and authentic that would benefit the organization in reducing employee turnover and improving customer satisfaction. Originality/value: There is a growing aspiration among researchers to study on what types of leadership style that is most suited to public organization. This research thus, examines the leadership style that would help increase the affective commitment of its employee in order to accomplish the agency vision. There is limited empirical study in this domain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR

The study aimed to identify factors influencing learners in selecting and engaging in ODL as a mode of study for tertiary nursing education. Face to face data collection with self-administrated questionnaire using convenience sampling with response rate of 208 (64.9%) was used. Regression analysis for significant value for the ANOVA with p> 0.01, show that the result for this study is a valid model. The results indicate that environment factors is a significant variable that influence the OUM nursing learners’ choice in selecting ODL as a mode of study among nursing learners for their tertiary education. Learners that came into the ODL system views the support of technology as the factor that make them chose ODL. (Abstract by authors
