    The masticatory system is part of stomatognatic systems that is a functional unit composed of the teeth, the temporomandibular joints, the muscles involved directly or directly in mastication (including the muscles of the lips and tongue) and the nervous systems supplying these tissues. Mastication is the action of breaking down of food, preparatory to deglutition. This breakingdown action is highly organized complex of neuromuscular and digestive activities. Functional and structural disturbance in any one of the components of the masticatory system may be reflected by functional or structural disorders in one or more of its other components. Therefore, it is important that dentists know how mastication normally occurs. This knowledge should ensure that dental procedures improve, rather than reduce, patient's functional abilities

    Iodine is an essential element for humans. It is concentrated in the thyroid gland and become a vital component of thyroid hormones. Reduced concentration of iodine causes iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are often called goiter. Thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland directly affect bone growth, bone maturation and physical height. Anthropometry is often used to measure the nutritional status of community. This study aims to determine the differences in anthropometry of goitrous and normal children.This study was an observational-analytic study with cross-sectional data. The sample was children of primary school, aged 72-90 months in the Sumbersari and Mayang subdistrict, Jember. Sample size was 100 people each group. The data collected was the degree of goiter (palpation method), physical height (using microtoise) and body weight (using a digital scale). The measurement results are also calculated based on the Z-score.Analysis of data using t-test.The results showed that average physical height of goitrous children was 113.53 ± 5.20 cm and the value of Zscore was -1.28 ± 0.98 SD. In non goitrous children average physical height was 117.59 ± 8.40 cm and -0.94 ± 1.41 SD (Zscore values). The average body weight of goitrous children was 18.5 ± 3.40 kg and -0.97 ± 1.13 SD (Z-score values). The average body weight of non goitrous children was 20.68 ± 10.82 kg and -0.18 ± 1.46 SD (Z-score values). T-test analysis results indicate the existence of differences in physical height and body weight in goitrous children and non goitrous children were significant. Physical height is associated with chronic malnutrition. Hypothyroidism in goitrous patients may reduce the secretion of T3 and T4 hormones, which are growth hormone. Decreasing it can inhibit accretion of linear growth (height) and becomes stunted. Chronic malnutrition that occurs in goitrous children may also predispose to nutritional balance disturbances occurred that resulted in acute malnutrition so the weight is low, as a result of decreased appetite, illness (eg diarrhea, respiratory infections), or due to lack of sufficient food is consume

The aim of this study is to know the influence consumption strawberry juice toward amount growth colony of saliva bacteria in the oral cavity.     Background: Biduri is a shrub plant sap. The sap extract of this plant can be used to treat inflammation and accelerate wound healing. Objective: Determine the effect of sap extract metanolic biduri of gingival wound healing in wistar rats of thickness epithelium seen histological. Methods: The study used 48 wistar rats. All rat were given injury on their gingival using punch biopsy, further more divided into 4 groups, (1) control (-), given no medication; (2) control (+), given ibuprofen; (3) treatment group, given the extract of sap of biduri 50 mg / kg bw; (4) treatment group, given the extract of sap of biduri 500 mg / kg bw. Furthermore, each of 3 rats in all groups performed decaputation on the on the 2nd, 4th, 8th, and 15th day’s after injury to take the mandible, after that the histological observation were done. The data were analyzed by two way Anova test, was continued by LSD test. Results: there were significant differences in epithelial thickness in all groups (p<0,05).     The growth of tumors is caused by imbalances between the rates at which cells are produced through cell division and the rate at which they die through a natural cell death process known as programmed cell death (also referred to as apoptosis). Problems in apoptosis mechanisms also contribute to therapy resistance, making tumors more difficult to kill with radiation or chemotherapy. It is important therefore to understand why tumors become refractory to apoptosis and to devise strategies for restoring proper function to cell death pathways in tumor cells. Recently it has been discovered that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) have a relationship with apoptosis pathway. Higher levels of COX-2 have been reported in some kinds of cancer. One of the roles of COX-2 in tumor development is its positive effect on the survival of tumor cells. The goal of this project is to provide review insights into the role of COX-2 in cancer. We will explore whether COX-2 inhibitors can shut off survival genes in cancer cells, and we will study how COX-2 affects the programmed cell death machinery of cancer cells. Understanding the mechanisms by which COX-2 contributes to cancer development will reveal to what extent this enzyme is an important target in the chemoprevention and treatment of cancer

    Aggressive Periodontitis is a form of periodontitis which is characterized with the presence of deep pocket, rapid loss of connective tissue attachment and alveolar bone. The rapid damage is caused by the dysfunction chemotaxis and phagocytosis from neutrophil.Calprotectin is a major cytosolic protein of neutrophils, monocytes and epithelial cells. The calprotectin level in gingival crevicular fluid is useful marker for evaluation the progression of inflammation in periodontitis disease. In this study, we investigated calprotectin level at different periodontal pocket depth from patient with aggressive periodontitis. This research involved twelve subjects who had been diagnosed as suffered from aggressive periodontitis. Their gingival crevicular fluid was taken from different periodontal pocket depths (slight ≤3mm, moderate 4-6mm, severe ≥ 7 mm), using sterile papperpoints. Level of calprotectin in gingival crevicular fluid were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) procedures. The result showed that gingival crevicular fluids calprotectin level increased approximately in proportion to probing depth slight, moderate, and severe (p< 0,05), and showed a significant positive correlation with probing depth (R=0,776, p< 0,05). This research concluded that the calprotectin level in gingival crevicular fluid is positively related to clinical indicators (probing depth) and reflect the degree of gingival inflamation in patient with aggressive periodontiti

    This studi was aimed to isolate piperine from cabe jawa (Piper retrofractum Vahl) and to look at the effect of piperine and hexane-undissolved piperine free fraction on testosterone levels of male rats. The subject of this research were twenty five healthy male wistar rats., which every group consist of five rats. Every group was treated by orally administration with Andriol (Testosterone undecanoat) 0,72 mg , CMC-Na 1%, piperine 1,6 mg/kg bw, hexane-undissolved piperine free fraction 29,10 mg/kg bw and hexane-undissolved fraction 31,72 mg/kg bw twenty seven days period of time, once a day. At the end of treatment, testosterone concentration was measured using Enzime Linked-Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) technique. Result were statistically evaluated by ANOVA followed by LSD test at the 0,05 significance level. The result of this studi showed that serum testosterone level was increased compared to the CMC-Na 1% group for hexane-undissolved piperine free fraction while piperine caused a decrease in the testosterone level. However, the increase and the decrease in values were not statistically significant (p>0,05)

    Diabetes mellitus is a systemic disease characterized by insulin deficiency. Common symptoms in people with diabetes is elevated blood glucose is called hyperglycemia. Manifestations in the oral cavity are inflammation of gingival tissue or periodontitis. The bacteria that play a role in the severity of periodontal disease is A. actinomycetemcomitans. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of blood glucose levels with the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans in DM rats treated with insulin therapy. Methode 20 three month old male Wistar rats with weight of 170-200 grams were divided into two groups. First, periodontitis and DM were manipulated into all groups through aloksan injection with dose of 170 mg/kg. Those rats in group I were treated with insulin, those in group II were without treatment. In the third and seventh weeks, the blood glucose levels and the number of A. actinomycetemcomitans was measured. The data was tested by using Pearson test. The results showed that there is a strong relationship between blood glucose levels with the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans. Conclusion: The increasing blood glucose levels are very strongly associated with an increase in the number of A. actinomycetemcomitans and otherwise in DM rats with insulin therapy
