Modified Simulation Learning Method on Knowledge and Attitude of Nursing Student's Cultural Awareness at Universitas Indonesia
Nursing students should be prepared to be culturally competent nurses. Cultural awareness is believed as the most important elements of cultural competence. The purpose of this article is to describe the effectiveness of Modified Simulation Learning Methods on cultural awareness as one atribute of cultural competence. A quasi-experimental (control group) design was used to explore the relationship between variabels among 98 first year nursing student attending Basic Nursing Concept I course at Faculty of Nursing Universitas Indonesia. The knowledge of cultural awareness was found statistically different between participants in Modified Simulation Methods group (intervention) and participants using the regular method. However, there were no statistical differences in attitude of cultural awareness between intervention and control groups. It could be concluded that Modified Simulation Learning methods is an effective learning method for increasing cultural knowledge of nusing student to be a competent nurse. Further research should be developed in continuing the improvement of cultural competence such as cultural skills
Family Empowerement Toward Children Under Five of Age with Pneumonia in Hospital: The Perception of Pediatric Nurse and Family
The aim of this study was to explore the perception about the family empowerment during the children’s hospitalization from the pediatric nurse and family’s point of view. This research used the qualitative design with in-depth interview using the open questions as the guideline. The research was carried out in one of the comfortable rooms in hospital. The sample taken was including 6 people from patients’ families and 6 pediatric nurses. The data was analyzed using the Collaizi method. There were three themes identified as the result which were the understanding of family empowerment, the process of family empowerment, and the effect of family empowerment. The conclusion from this study was that the family empowerment approach was possible to be implemented in the pediatric ward without neglecting several barriers that needed to be considered as important. Generally, both families and nurses supported the implementation of the family empowerment approach in giving the nursing care toward the children
The Effects of Cognitive Behavorial Therapy Group and Social Support Group on the Self Esteem among Breast Cancer Patients
This study is aimed to determine the main effects of CBT group, social support group (DS) and control group (KK) on the self esteem among breast cancer patients. Rosemberg self esteem scale (RSE) was used to measure self-esteem. The treatment group consisted of CBT and DS groups. Each treatment group received 12 counselling sessions within six weeks. Quantitative analysis general linear model (GLM) repeated measures was used to identify the groups’ (CBT, DS, and KK) main effect, the repeated test RSE scale (pre test, post test 1, post test 2, and post test 3) main effect and the interaction effect (CBT, DS, and KK), and repeated tests RSE scale (pre test, post test 1, post test 2, post test 3). There was no significant difference in the groups (CBT, DS, and KK) main effect on the Rosenberg Self Esteem (RSE) scores. There was a significant difference (F (3.10) = 66.823, p = 0.0001 (Wilk's Lambda) on the repeated test RSE scale (pre test, post test 1, post test 2, and post test 3) main effects on self esteem score. Overall findings showed an increase in RSE scores between the pre test, post test 1, post test 2 and post test 3
Subcellular Localization of Beta Catenin in Colorectal Non Neoplastic and Neoplastic Lesions
Loss of adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) function is typically an early event in sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC) pathogenesis. The key tumor suppressor function of the APC protein lies in its ability to destabilize free cytoplasmic beta catenin. This lead to the accumulation of nuclear beta catenin, and together with the DNA binding protein Tcf-4, function as a transcriptional activator. Accumulation of stabilized free β-catenin is considered as an early event and perhaps initiating the process in intestinal tumorigenesis. Neoplastic transformation in the CRC associated chronic colitis is considered similar to the adenoma-carcinoma sequence in sporadic CRC. The distinguish feature from the CRC-related colitis is the difference in time and frequency changes. Loss of APC function, regarded as the beginning of a very common event in sporadic CRC, but the CRC associated chronic colitis generally occurs at the end of the dysplasia-carcinoma sequence. This research was conducted to determine the subcellular location of beta catenin expression in chronic colitis, colorectal adenomas and carcinomas that were evaluated by immunohistochemical staining. It can be concluded that beta-catenin is a component that plays a role in the development of the CRC and the subcellular location of beta-catenin can describe its oncogenic activity.
Prevention of Chronic Lead Toxicity on Adult Worker with Calcium Supplement
Lead can cause health disorders in humans, albeit at a lower level than the permitted maximum blood lead level. Therefore, a treatment should be sought that will reduce lead in the blood, especially in adults. Communities who have a high risk for chronic lead poisoning from the ambient air are employees who work on the road. This study aims to analyze the effects of calcium supplementation on blood lead levels in adult workers. This research uses quasi-experimental design with a community trial design for as many as 150 people, the group consisted of 75 control and 75 treated groups which were given calcium supplements at a dose of 500 mg 3 times daily for three months. Measurements of blood lead levels were taken before consuming calcium and three months afterwards by using Spectrofotometer at Clinical Laboratory. Subjects who completed the study on a regular basis totaled 87 people, divided into a control group of 46 people and the treated group of 41 people. The results showed that: (1) the initial blood lead levels in the control group 6.11 μg/dL and 4.16 μg/dL after treatment. Initial blood lead levels in the treated group 10.35 μg/dL and 3.2 8 μg/dL after treatment; (2) calcium treatment with a dose of 3 x 500 mg a day orally for 3 months can reduce blood lead levels significantly. This study found that calcium tablets can be used to reduce blood lead levels in adult workers
Working Posture Evaluation of Clinical Student in Faculty of Dentistry University of Indonesia for the Scaling Task in Sitting Position in a Virtual Environment
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are global issues in the dental profession. This research evaluated the MSDs risk caused by the sitting working posture of clinical students performing the task of scaling. The evaluation using the virtual environment approach shows risk of MSDs in the students’ upper extremities such as neck, shoulder, and trunk. Further simulation based on the ideal sitting working posture shows that ergonomic scaling could be achieved when the patient sits at a 15° angle. When scaling the 1st and 4th quadrant of the teeth, the 9 o’clock position is used. Hence, the 11 o’clock position is used when scaling the 2nd and 3rd quadrant
An Ethnography Study of Nutritional Conditions of Pregnant Women in Banten Indonesia
Maternal mortality in childbirth in developing countries is still high. The study describes the qualitative methods used to examine the knowledge, attitude, beliefs and behaviour related to nutrition and nutritional supplementation of pregnant women. The role of village midwives and cadres’ in relation to nutrition education resulted in improving nutritional behaviour of pregnant women to some extent, but poverty and culture restricted the ability of pregnant women to access better food. The study shows that the position of pregnant woman is low within the hierarchy of both the health care system and the power structures of the broader community. Husbands, mothers-in-law, village midwives, cadres and village leaders all have more power in determining nutrition during pregnancy. However, some women tried to eat better and more nutritious food in secret, thereby subverting culture and the authority of husbands and mothers-in-law
Climate and Incidence Rate of Dengue Hemorragic Fever in Serang District
One of the impacts of climate change is the possibility of continuous increase in the incidence of vector borne disease. Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a vector-based disease that causes many deaths in tropical countries. Previous research stated that climate variation (number of rainy days, solar radiation, humidity) was significantly related to the high incidence of dengue in Bogor city. The purpose of this research is to know the description and the correlation between climatic factors (temperature, rainfall, rainy days, solar radiation, humidity and wind speed) and the incidence of DHF in Serang District in 2007-2008. The data collected include secondary data on climatic factors and the number of dengue cases. The results of this study indicate that there was no significant correlation between the climate factors (temperature, rainfall, rainy days, solar radiation, humidity, and wind speed) and the incidence rate of DHF in Serang District in 2007-2008. The reasons for this are the following: the data were not collected for a sufficiently long period of time; the obtained climate data were incomplete; and there was insufficient data on the frequency of DHF incidences taken
Curcuma Domestica Volatile Oil (Curcuma domestica, Val) as Anti Inflamation Agent on Gout Arthritis Patient with High Purin Diet
Increased concentrations of crystal monosodium urea at joint and soft tissue represent induced of inflammation at gout arthritis (GA). Incidence and prevalence GA disseminate wide in developed countries in Asian range from 2-15% and In Indonesia, GA prevalence was 29% and mostly found in Minahasa, Toraja, and Batak ethnics. This research was aimed to analyse application of curcuma domestica volatile oil as anti inflammation agent on gout arthritis patient who has high purin diet and to assess specific cellular mediator Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α). The design of the study was randomized pretest-posttest control group design with single blind treatment. The GCMS test was performed to identify active component in volatile oil. The sample was the new gout arthritis patient in Haji Public Hospital Surabaya. For a week, treatment group was assigned with volatile oil with dose 25 mg/kg body weight and the control group was given indometasin 150 mg/kg body weight. Blood samples were taken before and after treatment. Volatile oil of curcuma domestica (Curcuma domestica, val) has four fraction of active component. There was decreasing in blood urea level in treatment group (p = 0.001) and control group (p = 0.007). Both in control and treatment group, there was also decreasing in TNF-α, however it was not statistically significant
Risk Factors of Obesity in Children 5-15 Years Old
Obesity is the result of positive energy balance for long periods of time. The problem of obesity can occur at the age of children, teens to adults. The purpose of this study is to identify the most dominant factor of obesity in children (5-15 years) using Basic Health Research in 2007. The proportion of obesity (percentile >95) in children (5-15 years old) was 8.3%. The risk factor which mostly associated with obesity was the level of education after being controlled by sex, father's obesity, exercise and smoking habits and intake of protein. To overcome obesity problem in children (5-15 years old), it is needed to provide health education for children from an early age through enhanced IEC (Information, Education and Communication) such as anti smoking program, love of fiber (vegetables and fruits) and develop a culture of sport activities
