    Islamic Higher Education in the ASEAN Region: From Opportunities and Challenges

    This paper discusses the notion of Islamic Higher Education in ASEAN. It highlights the transformation of the ASEAN organization followed by the elaboration of Islamic Higher Education in the ASEAN Islamic Majority Nations of Brunei, Malaysia, and Indonesia. In these countries, some universities have emerged as exemplary institutions which are expected to uphold Islamic Higher Education. Opportunities and challenges of Islamic Higher Education among ASEAN countries are also discussed. Based on the investigation, it can be concluded that Islamic higher education has a proud tradition in Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia and that now with the rising important of ASEAN there are ample opportunities for the development of IHE in ASEA

The parents are in a nature fully responsible for their children, should educate their children toward optimal growth and development of nature.     This paper aims to describe the other side of the Pesantren that has been stereotyped as a conservative, traditional, and old fashioned islamic education institution. The research used the historical method. Particularly, it attempted to analyze and interprete as well as crosscheck between the primary pesantren texts gained from bookstore flea market and the writings of Orientalists‘ displayed in the bookstore in Supermall which is always regarded to be more valid by the researchers of Islamic education. The findings showed that in pesantren, students were taught to be democratic, tolerant to others, respect differences (pluralism), and cosmopolitan to science. Moreover, those attitudes proved to be a fundamental ideology of our nation. In other words, understanding Pesantren actually understands how to love the nation and the State of Indonesia. Thus, education in pesantren refers to education of Islamic boarding schools intended to inculcate and love their own people

    DAMPAK KONFLIK INTERNAL KEPEMIMPINAN PADA KINERJA DOSEN PERGURUAN TINGGI ISLAM

    This paper intends to unravel the leadership internal conflict that generally happened in all State Islamic College in Indonesia, especially in the institutions named Institute (IAIN) and high school (STAIN). These issues was revealed by using case study. The selected case is STAIN Kudus in Central Java. Data were collected through interviews, observation and documentation study. The data was then analyzed using Miles and Huberman interactive model and based on the theory of transactional leadership proposed by Yulk (1998), the theory of effective leadership from Razik (1995) and models of leadership (Muhammad SAW) of Islam. The results showed that internal leadership conflicts that occurred in STAIN Kudus is the impact of \u27direct election\u27 mechanism in selecting the chairman in the late 2005. The battle between the winning and losing camps continues to become a long-drawn leadership internal conflicts. The conflicts apparently decrease the performance of the lecturers. It is characterized by shifting the focus of the lecturers‟s performances from academic to political performance

    Character education as one of the national development priorities in 2010 must be coherent are in line with the national education goals. Expected character education is not a subject that stands alone or is a value that is taught, but rather the effort to plant one of these values through the integration of subjects. Learning science in elementary school specifically aims to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills with the main objective to develop creativity and critical thinking. Values that can be implanted through a process of habituation in science subjects in primary schools are religious, honest, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creative, independent, democratic, curiosity, the spirit of nationalism, patriotism, recognize excellence, friendship/communicative, love peace, love reading, environmental care, social care, and responsibility. Aspects must be considered in the integration is to link these values explicitly in planning, implementing and assessing learning lessons tailored to the characteristics of the subjects

    This paper aims to unravel the humanistic values in Islamic education because dehumanistic attitudes and behaviors often harm the education. In Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, a teacher bear to hit two of his students so that both students had Suffered from head injuries. This condition requires the teaching paradigm to be reconstructed in order that the missions of education can be reached. This study used content analysis as the method to criticize literatures related to humanism. In the context of Islamic education, teachers are muaddib that prepare students to build civilization in the future. Teachers in teaching activities have serial relationships to God (Surah al-\u27Alaq [96]: 4). They play their roles and functions as role model, facilitator, motivator, and partner in learning for their students. In giving guidance (irshad) the teachers acts as a guide, advisor and mentor.     This study aims to assess policies and programs WASDALBIN, constraints in WASDALBIN implement the policy, the steps in implementing policies WASDALBIN PTAIS. The method used descriptive analytic. The unit of analysis of this study determined purposively, is in 3 areas Kopertais I Jakarta, Banten West Java II, and IV Surabaya, which is considered to represent the whole territory of Indonesia. Data were collected through interviews, documentation and observation studies. The result of the research shows that communication is less effective WASDALBIN policy. The policy implementers assume that WASDALBIN policy is less clear, consistent and appropriate. The quality and the proportion of inadequate resources. Performance of policy implementing is less than optimal. The structure of the bureaucracy in the implementation WASDALBIN still convoluted, making it less efficient. This weakness is almost evenly in all regions studied WASDALBI, with slight variations. Conclusion This study shows that the policy WASDALBIN on Kopertais not be implemented optimally

    This paper intends to show that the Pancasila (five principles of state) and the Pillarsof Islam (the five religious value system) has synergy to build Indonesia\u27s nationaleducation values system. To explore the relation between religion and politics inPancasila, Martha Beck used Alfred North Whitehead\u27s process philosophy, CarlGustav Jung\u27s archetypes psychology and Ervin Laszlo‟s systems theory. To approvethat Pancasila and Pillars of Islam has synergy to Indonesia‟s national education,Irawan used the concept of scientia sacra by Seyyed Hossein Nasr. The results showedthat the Indonesian national education system consistently present in a triangularrelationship between religion (spiritual humanism), politics (democracy) and cultural(multicultural and tolerance). The relationship manifested in Indonesian NationalEducation System, which is always grounded philosophically and aims at threethings; 1) form human who believe, cautious and has noble character; 2) master ofscience and technology; and 3) actively participate in creating order and peace in theworld, even a blessing for the entire universe. Indonesia\u27s national education systemcould be a new alternative in building a more holistic education systems around theworld because considered crucial interconnection between science, religion, interestsof state and demands of the global. This is known as a moderate Islamic education

    IMPROVING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN THE SUBJECTS OF ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

    The purpose of this study was (1) to know a difference between student learning outcomes of low and high sub groups with learning to use the media worksheets in the subjects of Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam); and (2) to know the obstacles in the implementation of learning by using the worksheets on the subject. The subjects study were three Open Junior High Schools, Bandung, namely Open Junior High School 8 Bandung, Open Junior High School 27 Bandung, and Open Junior High School 36 Bandung. The hypothesis tested the increase in student achievement in the subjects of Islamic Religious Education after a learning process using worksheets. This study was a quasi-experimental study. The design used in this study is a pre-test post-test one group design. The results show that learning outcomes after the use of worksheets has no significant difference. Then the t-test Test Final Problem Description pretest and posttest seen that the value of significance (sig.2-tailed) with the t-test is 0.007. Since the significance value less than 0.05 then the decision-making criteria, H0 rejected. This shows that learning outcomes after the use of worksheets has significant difference. Using the analysis, the results showed that the use of worksheets in the learning process could improve the learning outcomes of students in the subjects of Islamic Religious Education in junior high school in Bandung

    CONTRIBUTION OF INDONESIAN DEMOCRATIC TO ISLAMIC EDUCATION

    This paper aims to show up the reason that Indonesian democratic can give contribution to developing of Islamic education theory, in order to responds of contemporary issues. To achieve of the purpose, this paper was discussing a number of democratic theory and Islamic education contemporary literature with holding a dialogue to Indonesian culture background. Recently, Islamic education theory and practice has undergone some transformations, in its system, curriculum, and institutions. One of the trigger was a demand to implementing a conception of democracy in Islamic education praxis. In Indonesia it was adopted from Pancasila, exactly the Bhineka Tunggal Ika slogan. To realized of that, Indonesian Islamic education institution like madrassa, since 1980s was combined between curriculum Indonesia national and Islamic education. It is be a sign that Indonesian democracy can be an alternative to developing a theory of democratic Islamic education
