    Get PDF
This study investigate the relationship between economic growth, poverty, and stunting in Indonesia. Observation during 2015-2017 in 34 regions in Indonesia. Using a spatial approach with Klassen's typology and applying the panel vector error correction model. The finding indicated that the priority handling of the problem of the high stunting prevalence focuses on the islands of Sulawesi, Maluku, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, and Papua. Furthermore, addressing the problem of economic growth slows focuses on the Islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra. Meanwhile, the handling of high poverty levels focuses on the islands of Sulawesi, Sumatra, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Papua. On the other side of this study, we get evidence of unidirectional causality flowing from poverty rates and the stunting prevalence toward economic growth in the long-run. The contribution of the stunting case is more dominant to have an impact on slowing economic growth. We also find evidence of unidirectional causality flowing from economic growth and stunting to poverty levels in the long-run, the contribution of economic growth is relatively more dominant with an impact on reducing poverty levels. While there is no evidence of causality flowing from economic growth and poverty to stunting, we have also found that poverty rates have a relatively high contribution to the increase in stunting cases in Indonesia

This paper attempts to investigate the ownership and usability of debit and credit cards in Kosovo focusing on two demographic variables: the gender and age of the bank's clients. For research purposes, the Central Bank of Kosovo (CBK) data are used for two consecutive years: 2015 and 2016. The comparative method is used to compare the clients’ behavior on the choice of the method to conduct payment and the usage of credit and debit cards in Kosovo banks for two consecutive years 2015 and 2016 based on the gender and age of bank clients. The results show that there is a gender gap, as debit and credit cards are owned and used more by males than females in all age groups and payment types. Whereas, for the variable age, the results show that both debit and credit cards are mostly used by customers aged 25-35 years followed by those 18-25 years. Based on the results of the paper, conclusions were drawn and some suggestions were given. We suggest that banks should do more to enhance the ownership and usage of debit and credit cards by females and elderly clients. Regarding the variable gender, we suggest that banks should offer credit and bonus cards with preferential rates to female entrepreneurs considering the very small number of female entrepreneurs to boost female entrepreneurship and decrease female unemployment in Kosovo

    Get PDF
This study examines the determinants of cost efficiency commercial banks’ in Ethiopian using balanced panel data with a sample of 13 commercial banks over the period 2010-2017 by paying a translog stochastic cost frontier approach. The identification and selection of inputs and outputs variables was based on the intermediation approach. Accordingly, three input variables (cost of labor, cost of capital, and cost of fund) and two output variables (total loans and other earning assets) are used in the study. Furthermore, five banks specific and one macroeconomic variable are included to examine their effect on cost efficiency. So as to examine the effect of determinant variables which are associated with banks efficiency, a single stage maximum likelihood estimation method is applied to stochastic frontier cost function. The empirical estimations were accomplished by Appling a single stage maximum likelihood function assimilated into Stata software. The estimation is based on conditional mean model concepts. The finding shows that from bank specific factors, return on assets (ROA), and intermediation ratio have positive and significant for intermediation (IR) and insignificant for ROA with cost inefficiency. On the other hand, Bank size (lnTA), Credit risk (CR) and capital adequacy ratio (CAR) have a significant negative coefficient with cost inefficiency. GDP also has negative but insignificant with inefficiency. Therefore, banks are recommended to improve and sustain their efficiency by maintaining available proportion of capital adequacy ratio and attract high value, low interest-bearing demand deposits

The aim of the study was to examine the effect of leadership on organizational performance with specific reference to Commercial banks operate in Jimma Town. To achieve the objectives the study causal type of research and panel design was used to examine effect that leadership exert on the bank’s performance. The primary data sources were leaders on different levels and their subordinate employees while, the secondary data sources were annual report of individual banks. Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire was adapted for collecting the data. The descriptive and inferential analyses was conducted to analyze the collected data. Subsequently, the Random Effect Model was used to investigate the extent of relationship between variables. The study results revealed that the existing leadership brings changes in working environment by inspiring and motivating employees for changes, creation, innovation, to go beyond from what they actually think they can; and reward employees and make recognition in exchange for the work they perform, giving close directions and guidance have positive and significant effect in promoting the performance of the bank. Hence, the leaders of banks should focus on playing a role model and stakeholders in the industry should consider taking banking in a non-traditional

    Get PDF
The objective of this study is to empirically examine the nexus between capital market and economic growth in Nigeria between 1980 and 2017. In the cause of pursuing the desired result, the economic growth was proxy by the gross domestic product (GDP) while the capital market variables considered included market capitalization, all shares index, number of dealings, gross capital formation, exchange rate, value of all transaction and interest rate. This study is predated by the ineffectiveness of capital market which affects liquidity, acquisition of information about firms such as risk diversification, savings harmonization and corporate management. In lieu of this, the research adopted Auto-regressive Distribution Lag model and Bound Cointegration Testing. The results revealed that there is long run relationship between capital market and economic growth in Nigeria. To justify the findings, post estimation tests were conducted. For instance, the Jarque-Beta test suggest that the residuals for both models are normally distributed since the probability value is greater than 5% significant level. Hence, the hypothesis of normal distribution for residuals cannot be rejected. The Breusch-Godfrey Serial Correlation (LM) test re-affirms that the hypothesis of no autocorrelation can be rejected since the probability value is greater than 5% critical value. Henceforward, the study recommends that government should expand the market technological based in order to further improve transactions and dealings, which could enhance its internationalization and competitiveness. Also, regulatory body like security and exchange commission (SEC) should improve its supervisory roles towards reducing shoddy and unethical dealings in the Nigerian capital marke

Are aids enough to empower: case of peatland Liberica Coffee farmer in Indonesia

Many agents have been involved to empower peatland farmers who cultivate Liberica Cofee. They have the same general purposes to save farming practices, but they have different programs and activities.  Many agents involved had worried to blur focus and targets. Hence, the purpose of this study is to reveal empowering practice and performance.  The study is located in  Mekar Jaya village,  the center of peatland Liberica Coffee, and used a qualitative method where field notes, observation, and in-depth interviews were used. Data collection was conducted in conjunction with the empowerment activities carried out by the research team in 2017-2019. The results showed the importance of empowering focus, coordination between groups, real participation of all groups and its members, and the need for local government intervention.   Neglecting those will diminish the peatland farming environment function and farming roles to the farmer.  In the future, the practice of empowerment will be more complex due to the global demands on the sustainability of peatlands increase. Hence, empowering could be started from farming improving, increasing productivity, and followed by increasing farmer's and group’s capacity to manage both on economics and environmental value of peatland farming

The study empirically investigate the link between agricultural output growth and government spending in Nigeria from 1981 to 2018. Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test was used to investigate stationary variable at different levels. The mixture in order of integration necessitate Auto Redistributed Lag (ARDL) and Bounds co-integration, since it allows combination of fractionally integrated variables. The results show both short and long run effect of government spending on the growth of agricultural output in Nigeria. The policy implication is that any disruption in government spending on agricultural sector would have adverse effect on agricultural output growth in Nigeria. In view of poor agricultural output growth in Nigeria, coupled with corruption, and policy summersaults in the sector. It is pertinent in the study, to come up with the following recommendations thus; government should re-double it efforts in terms food security through improved agricultural policies, proper channelization of loans across board with sustainable fiscal measures that can translate to actual growth
