Corporate social responsibility spending of commercial banks: determinants and consequence
The contribution of firms towards society in the form of corporate social responsibility has attracted significant concern for many stakeholders, especially among banks in Ghana. It is perceived that; banks especially do Corporate Social Responsibility just because they are the most profitable sector in Ghana. The study sort to examine the kind of relationship that exists between bank performance and CSR in Ghana. Also, to determine how bank size and profitability and it's listing status and foreign ownership influence CSR spending in Ghana. The study sampled 24 commercial banks over seven years from 2010 to 2016. The study analyzed data using statistical tools such as descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and panel regression analysis. The study found out that engaging in CSR activities increases banks' profitability in Ghana, especially for ROE. Â Besides, the study concluded that bigger and larger banks are more profitable than small companies, so they are more involved in CSR activities. The study also investigated whether foreign ownership and the listing status of banks influence CSR spending. On this aspect, the study found out that banks' listing status influences CSR spending, but foreign ownership does not. The result implies that listed banks are more public and faces more social pressure hence they spend more on CSR to legitimize their operations

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of implemented regency government policies in achieving successful coastal rehabilitation. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive analysis with a quantitative approach. The results shows the capacity of the Karawang Regency Government was still low in supporting the successful implementation of coastal rehabilitation policies. The Karawang Regency Government needs to collaborate with other stakeholders, redistribute employees, and encourage increase on education and training for staff
Stock-return volatility persistence over short and long range horizons: Some empirical evidences
In this paper, we account for memory failure or otherwise in the daily evolution of stock return and volatility within the purview of short and long ranges based on the arrival of fundamental news. This accounts for the return on assets in the current period to be a function of returns realized in the pasts. To achieve this objective, we estimated ARMA, ARFIMA, GARCH, FIGARCH and HYGARCH models. After implementing maximum likelihood estimation technique, we found out that the ARMA coefficients were not significant, the GARCH coefficients were significant and the memory coefficients in terms of ARFIMA, FIGARCH and HYGARCH were statistically significant. In the light of these, we propose the rejection of efficient hypothesis in the long range and document a single memory in volatility in the short range. The study recommends that ARFIMA and HYGARCH are the best forecasting models for return and volatility respectively in the Nigerian stock market
Fiscal illusion as an incentive for local government public expenditure efficiency: The influence of community sensitization
Although the effect of public expenditure efficiency on local government fiscal performance is widely-documented, what precisely explains expenditure efficiency remains largely unclear. Nevertheless, past research holds fiscal illusion as the most likely predictor and community sensitization very critical for fiscal illusion-expenditure efficiency formation. We employed fiscal illusion theory to investigate possible fiscal illusion-community sensitization-expenditure efficiency mediation in 16 districts, 6 municipalities, and 160 sub-counties of Uganda’s northern region. Over the years, Uganda; an East African country, is applauded for its fiscal federalism proficiency. But presently, its northern region is grappling a 20-year post-conflict trauma likely to compromise entity spending efficiency. Structural equation modeling results suggest that all the four fiscal illusion constructs: fiscal imbalances, political divide, tax payment bias, and fiscal sabotage, predict changes in expenditure efficiency. However, community sensitization does not mediate the fiscal illusion-expenditure efficiency linkages. Implications for these findings and possible direction for future research are discussed
Sustainable food crop production in karst area of Parigi, Pangandaran, West Java: preliminary study
Karst formations in Selasari and Parakanmanggu Village of Parigi District, Pangandaran Regency, West Java includes dolines, subterranean stream, springs, and karst hills are useful for agriculture. The purpose of this study was to 1) identifiy the used of karst area for rice cultivation and local trees in karst area; 2) evaluate the benefit of rice cultivation and local tree for local communities and 3) asses the legal aspect for supporting food crop production. The study was done using qualitative-descriptive method with the primary data obtained from field observations, soil analysis, local tree identification, and interviews. Secondary data was obtained from the Regional Government and the National Geological Agency. The results showed that rice cultivation has been carried out in suitable soil by using simple and rainfed irrigation. Local fruit, herbs, timber and shade-ornamental tree grow naturally on the karst area. Tree logging without significant revegetation caused water supply shortage so that farmers only grow rice once a year. Athough the rice productivity of both villages is lower than average rice productivity of Pangandaran Regency, rice is important to support local inhabitant’s consumption and family income. Land Use Plan year 2018 regulates the general provisions on zoning regulations for agriculture in susceptible area but the regulation does not mention the karst areas. This study suggested that tree conservation is needed to maintain the existence of rice fields. Land use planning for agriculture in the region must be based on integrated considerations of rice cultivation and local tree conservation

A spatial analysis of monetary and non-monetary poverty in Cameroon between 2001 and 2014
The objective of this study is to analyze the spatial distribution of monetary and non-monetary poverty in Cameroon. The identification of poor households by the monetary dimension is done using the thresholds defined by national institute of statistics. While in the non-monetary, dimension we use multiple correspondence analysis to construct composite indicators of well-being. After calculating the composite indicators, we use the formula developed by Ki et al. (2005) to calculate the poverty line. The data used in this study is from the second, third and fourth Cameroon household surveys. The results show that the incidence of monetary poverty declined from 40.2% in 2001 to 39.9% in 2007 to reach 37.5% in 2014. Non-monetary poverty stagnated between 2001 and 2007, with the incidence going from 60.65% to 61%. In 2014, the incidence declined to 53.84%. The proportion of individuals affected by both monetary and non-monetary poverty increased from 34.34% in 2001 to 35.59% in 2007, and stood at 33.49% in 2014. The rural areas are the most affected by monetary and non-monetary poverty. The region of the country most affected by monetary and non-monetary poverty is the Far North. Taking into account these results, poverty reduction policies in Cameroon should give priority to rural areas. Thus specific measures should be taken to improve access to basic infrastructures in rural areas. The Cameroonian government can also reduce taxes on construction materials
