Medicinal uses and pharmacological properties of Moringa oleifera
Moringa oleifera Lam [Moringaceae] is a highly valued plant, distributed in many countries of the tropics and subtropics. It has an impressive range of medicinal uses with high nutritional value. Different parts of this plant contain a profile of important minerals, and are a good source of protein, vitamins, β -carotene, aminoacids and various phenolics. In addition to its compelling water purifying powers and high nutritional value, M. oleifera is very important for its medicinal value. Various parts of this plant such as the leaves, roots, seed, bark, fruit, flowers and immature pods act as cardiac and circulatory stimulants, possess anitumor, antipyretic, antiepileptic, antiinflammatory, antiulcer, antispasmodic, diuretic, antihypertensive, cholesterol lowering, antioxidant, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, antibacterial and antifungal activities, and are being employed for the treatment of different ailments in the indigenous system of medicine. Dermal irritation and sensitization study of Euphorbia neriifolia latex and its anti-inflammatory efficacy
The presence of polycyclic diterpene esters in Euphorbia plants sap makes it highly irritant and notably corrosive causing burning pain of skin. The toxic nature of the Euphorbia is discouraging their uses despite the possible manifold therapeutic potentials. Euphorbia neriifolia (Euphorbiaceae) commonly known as Thuar is a sacculant shrub commonly and abundantly found as hedge plant in Central India. This study was designed to screen the physiochemical properties of latex and dermal irritation potential of its different solvent fractions targeting to retain the triterpene content high to extract therapeutic utilization. Physico-chemical, qualitative and quantitative phytochemical, dermal irritation and sensitization profile and topical anti-inflammatory activity of E. neriifolia latex were studied. Fresh latex contains 10.95 % solid with 18.32 % total resinous matter, and 24.50 % and 16.23 % of total diterpene and triterpene respectively. Petroleum ether fractionation showed 63.80 % yield with rich presence of steroid and triterpenoid. Pet. ether fraction was found to be apparently nonirritating with a PII score of 0.43/0.11 for erythema and edema according to Draize Dermal Classification System. Chloroform, acetone and water fractions are skin irritating due to presence of high diterpene content where as pet. ether fraction is rich in triterpene showing nonirritant activity. Topically latex pet. ether fraction at 750 and 500 mg/ml dose showed 42.40 and 35.25 % inhibition of carrageenan induced paw edema. Anti-inflammatory activity of latex pet. ether fraction is due to presence of triterpenes euphol, nerifoliol and cycloartenol. This study explores safe topical use profile of E. neriifolia latex retaining its anti-inflammatory efficacy
Antinociceptive evaluation of an ethanol extract of Achyranthes aspera (agadha) in animal models of Nociception.
Achyranthes aspera Linn., known as Chirchira (Hindi), Agadha(Marathi) is an indigenous herb found in India. It is the basiccomposition of many traditional remedies. The herb has beenreported to have variety of activities like antifertility,antihyperlipidemic, antidiabetic, immunomodulatory,anticarcinogenic, diuretic and cardiotonic, anti-inflammatory,antifungal and antibacterial activity. Present study was designed toevaluate the antinociceptive activity of ethanolic extract of A.Aspera (EEAA) and to find the phytochemical responsible for thisactivity with possible mode of its activity. The antinociceptiveactivity of ethanol extract of Achyranthes aspera was investigated inalbino mice. The pharmacological assays used were the tail flick, hotplate and the formalin-induced pain tests. The extract was givenintraperitoneally at a dose of 400 mg/kg (our earlier study revealedno activity at the dose 200mg/kg). Pentazocine (10mg/kg bodyweight i.p.) was used as standard. Data analyzed by ANOVA testfollowed by Dunnett’s test. All the results were expressed as Mean(±SEM). P <0.05 was considered significant. For formalin test thepercent inhibition was calculated by using formula (C-T)/C × 100(%). Phytochemical screening revealed presence of triterpenoidsaponins possessing oleanolic acid as aglycone, viz. A & B, alkaloidachyranthine, water soluble base betaine and steroids. In the tail flick& hot plate test extract treated animals showed significant analgesicactivity at 30, 60, 90 and 120min. Extract (400 mg/kg i.p.) reducedthe formalin induced pain in both phases (i.e. neurogenic andinflammatory) by 58.8% and 92.7%, respectively. Ethanol extract ofA.Aspera exhibit central as well as peripheral antinociceptiveactivity
Hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic effect of different extracts of acacia arabica lamk bark in normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats
Acacia arabica commonly known as babool are used in traditional Indian medicine for treatment of diabetes mellitus. The hypoglycemic effect of aqueous extract (hot and cold water) and hydroalcoholic extract of Acacia arabica was investigated. Oral administration of cold water extract of Acacia arabica bark to diabetic and normal rats at a dose of 400 mg/kg body weight resulted in significant reduction of blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides. Phytochemical investigations found that phenolic compounds are presents in Acacia arabica extracts. The cold water extract of Acacia arabica was found to reduce blood glucose level to its normal level with in seven days. Histological studies of the β- cells show its action on pancreas
Potential Analgesic & Anti-Pyretic Herbal drugs: A Comparative Review of Marketed Products
Analgesic from the family of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have probably been used for more than 2000 years. In the 1900 ASA become an established treatment for pain and migraine. The detection of the main mechanism of the clinical effect of ASAs in John R.Vane’s group in 1972(who received the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1982 for his discovery of prostaglandin synthesis inhibition) gave a new and persistent drive to the development of other chemically different NSAID. The currently available analgesic and antipyretic drugs in allopathic system of medicine are not so effective in combating wide variety of complications. The remedial measure may lie in the ayurvedic system of medicine. The various herbal drugs such as Acacia nilotica, Bauhinia racemosa Linn. Cleome viscose, Hippobromus panciflorus etc known for their potential analgesic and antipyretic activity shall be discussed. The various branded herbal formulations like Rumalaya, Charak, Rumartho, Arthrella, and Reosto etc available in the market as analgesic and antipyretic remedies are also discussed along with their clinical merits. It may be concluded that since ayurvedic formulations contain number of ingredients in which one ingredient may act to enhance the action of other ingredient. Also as a result of so many ingredients present in the particular ayurvedic formulation it helps in combating other diseases in addition to analgesic and antipyretic activity
A Landmark Approach to Aphrodisiac Property of Abelmoschus manihot (L.)
The Abelmoschus manihot (L.) commonly reffered to as “Junglee bhindi” is widely used to control fertility, depression and anxiety in traditional Chinese medicine and has potential therapeutic benefit for cardiovascular diseases associated with diabetes mellitus. The present study is aimed to investigate the effect of 95% ethanolic extract of Abelmoschus manihot on general mounting frequency, intromission frequency, penile erection index along with body weight/organ weight and sperm count on sexually normal male mice. Two doses i.e. 100and 200 mg/kg b.w. of ethanolic extract administered to Swiss albino mice, showed pronounced anabolic and spermatogenic effect in animals of respective groups. There was a remarkable increased in sperm count and penile erection index and also improved sexual behavior of male mice by increased mount and intromission frequency. The result of the present study signatured for sexual enhancing capacity of the drug Abelmoschus manihot is an individual and also holds good aphrodisiac property when compared with standard drug. It was noticed that a 200 mg/kg b.w. dose of Abelmoschus manihot, the performance rate enhances without any side effect. Therefore, the conclusion suggestive that the Abelmoschus manihot will be a drug of choice or alternative therapy for a marketed product. Evaluation of antibacterial potential of Trikatu churna and its ingredients: An in vitro study
Herbal medicines are being used increasingly as dietary supplements to fight or prevent common disease. The dried fruits of Piper nigrum L. (Piperaceae), Piper longum L. (Piperaceae) and rhizome of Zingiber officinale Roscoe. (Zingiberaceae) were powdered and mixed together in equiproportions to get a polyherbal formulation, Trikatu churna. The aqueous, ethanol, methanol and acetone extracts of these plant’s fruits and Trikatu churna were prepared and antibacterial activities were tested by disc diffusion method against enteric bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella typhimurium and Enterobacter aerogenes. The extracts of Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale were found antibacterial to all bacterial pathogen tested. Trikatu churna exhibited potent antibacterial activity; this might be due to the multifunctional effect of all the three plant ingredients of Trikatu churna. Antibacterial activity of Trikatu churna and its ingredients was carried out in attempt to support the use of Trikatu churna for the treatment of enteric bacterial infections
Standardization of extract of Leucaena leucocephala (lmk) De Wit seeds by α-glucosidase inhibitor
Extracts of Leucaena leucocephala (lmk) De Wit seeds were collected from different areas in Java; they include Jakarta, Cengkareng, Bogor and Bandung. Each extract was examined for water content, ash content, acid-insoluble ash content, and α- glycosidase inhibition assay. The results showed that ethanolic extracts of Leucaena leucocephala (lmk) De Wit seeds collected from Bandung were found to be most active in inhibiting the formation of α-glycosidase compounds with an IC50 value of 7,46 ± 0,21 μg/ml, which was confirmed with ash content of 5,58 ± 0,04, acid-insoluble ash content of 0,55 ± 1,33, and water content of 26,22 ± 0,90
The Botany, Chemistry, Pharmacological and Therapeutic Application of Psoralea corylifolia L. – A Review
Psoralea corylifolia Linn. is an endangered and medicinally important plant indigenous to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Its medicinal usage is reported in Indian pharmaceutical codex, the Chinese, British and the American pharmacopoeias and in different traditional system of medicines such as Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha. The review reveals that wide ranges of phytochemical constituents have been isolated from the plant and it possesses important activities like antibacterial, antiinflammatory and antitumer. Various other activities like hepatoprotective, antioxidants and antithelminitic have also been reported. These repots are very encouraging and indicate that herb should be studied more expensively for its therapeutic benefits. This article briefly reviews the botany, pharmacology, biochemistry and therapeutic application of the plant. This is an attempt to compile and document information on different aspects of Psoralea corylifolia and highlight the need for research and development
Anti-inflammatory activity of Syzygium Cumini leaves
The Syzygium cumini (Myrtaceae) is a popular traditional medicinal plant in India. This study was intended to evaluate the antiinflammatory activity of ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of S.cumini leaves in carrageenan induced paw oedema in wistar rats at the dose level of 200 and 400 mg/kg administrated orally. Both the extracts exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity, which supports the traditional medicinal utilization of the plant. This study established anti-inflammatory activity of leaves of S.cumini
