Effect of Carum carvi and Curcuma longa on hormonal and reproductive parameter of female rats
Background: Rhizome of Curcuma longa and seeds of Carum Carvi a folk medicinal plant used as have antifertility potentials. Present investigation study the effect of both the plant on hormone and reproductive parameter of female rat. The aqueous and ethanolic extract of rhizome of Curcuma longa and seeds of Carum Carvi used for testing antifertility activity in female rat. Aqueous and ethanolic extract of plants were administered orally to female rat for 30 consecutive days. Estrous cycle, reproductive hormones (LH, FSH and estrogen) and weight of reproductive organ were studied in both control and extract-administered groups by using standard methods Results: The female albino rats after oral administration of different doses of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Carum carvi and Curcuma longa, showed a significant antifertility activity. FSH and LH level was significantly decreased in both drugs while amount of estrogen in ethanolic extract of both the drugs treated animals was found to be increased. The blockage of estrus phase induced by treatment of aqueous and ethanolic extract of both drug. They also increase the weight of ovary, uterus and body weights while uterine weight in immature rats increased in extract treated group. Conclusions: The present study which was undertaken to find endocrinological and physiological changes in the reproductive system of female albino rats after oral administration of different doses of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Carum carvi and Curcuma longa, showed a significant antifertility activity
Radiation Protective Potentiality of Adhatoda vasica
The present study forecasts the extensive damage caused by radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment for cancer in the genetic setup of an individual. To counteract this damage, radioprotective potentiality of 50% Methanolic extract of Adhatoda vasica was evaluated through Cyto-Geno analysis. 50% Methanolic extract of Adhatoda vasica leaves was used as a drug whose radioprotective potentiality was to be investigated. Human peripheral lymphocytes were cultured using RPMI-1640 media, harvested and observed under microscope for chromosomal aberration assay. Total 200 metaphases were counted for each group. All the metaphases were found to be normal in Control group. The frequency of normal metaphases greatly increased after pretreatment with both low and high drug dose (50mg/Kg body weight and 100mg/Kg body weight) concentration. The average normal metaphase in Radiation Control was 118 out of 200 metaphases but after pretreatment with 50% Methanolic extract of Adhatoda vasica the number of normal metaphase increased to 179 at 50mg/Kg body weight and 184 at 100mg/Kg body weight. It was concluded that 50% Methanolic Extract of Adhatoda vasica with both low and high drug doses have shown its potentiality as a radio protector against the therapeutically induced mutations which can prove to be a contributor in cancer management in future. Such indigenous Indian, herbal, cost effective, poor man friendly drug will definitely be a potential adjuvant to cancer treatments like radiotherapy and chemotherapy since Amifostine a well known radioprotector given to the patients at the time of cancer therapy is expensive and has its own side effects
Phytochemical Investigations of Crown of Solanum melongena fruit
The crown of Solanum melongena was removed from fruit, dried, extracted and percentage yield was calculated. Phytochemical examination of the methanolic and aqueous extracts showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, steroids, tannins/ phenolics, flavonoids, proteins and carbohydrates. It was concluded that the extracts of crown contains important constituents for pharmacological activities
Protective effect of Bixa orellana L. against radiation induced chromosomal aberration in Swiss albino mice
Radioprotective effect of hydroalcoholic extract of seeds of Bixa orellana have been studied by examining chromosome aberration in cells of bone marrow in irradiated mice. Healthy adult Swiss mice were injected intraperitoneally (ip) with 500 mg kg–1 body weight, 1000 mg kg–1 of or double distilled water (DDW). They were exposed to whole body irradiation of 2.0 Gy gamma radiation 30 min later. After 24 h, chromosomal aberrations were studied in the bone marrow of the femur by routine metaphase preparation after colchicine treatment. Radiation (4.0 Gy) increased the number of aberrant cells from less than 1% in controls to almost 20%. Pretreatment with the extract compounds resulted in a significant reduction in the percentage of aberrant metaphases as well as in the different types of aberration scored. The extract was not toxic at 1500 mg kg–1 body weight. Being non toxic and easily available natural source Bixa orellana extract may be use for as radioprotective for human beings
