Daya Hambat Ekstrak Kulit Semangka (Citrullus lanatus) Terhadap Pertumbuhan Candida albicans
Candida albicans is normal flora found in the oral mucosa in healthy individuals but has opportunistic pathogenic properties. The change in the oral cavity's environmental conditions can cause C. albicans to turn into a pathogen and cause oral candidiasis. Antifungal drugs that are common used for the treatment of oral candidiasis are topical nystatin preparations. Nystatin is an antifungal drug from the polyene group produced by Streptomyces noursei, which is thought to be very effective in treating diseases caused by C. albicans with a success rate 79.6 - 87.5%. The previous study showed that watermelon peel extract contains active compounds of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. The active compound is known to have antifungal activity. The study aimed to determine the ability of watermelon peel extract to inhibit the growth of C. albicans. The type of research conducted is experimental laboratories using the post-test only control group design. The observations in this study about the inhibitory power of watermelon rind extract (Citrullus lanatus) on the growth of C. albicans showed that there were inhibitory zones of watermelon skin extract on the growth of C. albicans

Chicken meat is one of the commodities consumed by most Indonesian people and has a pH range of 5,5 – 6,0. The smart label has been applied as a chicken meat freshness detector. As dual indicator freshness, two pH indicators have been used, i.e., bromothymol blue (BTB) and methyl red (MR). The objective of this research was to determine chicken meat freshness using a smart label at room temperature. The color change of the smart label was examined by ImageJ software to determine freshness degree using the mean RGB value. The chicken meat was examined every 2 hours for pH and TVB analysis during the 24 hours storage at room temperature. The result showed that color indicator would change according to chicken meat freshness, BTB turned from yellow to blue (mean RGB 210,591 ± 0,376), and MR turned from red to yellow (mean RGB 208,146 ± 0,390). Chicken meat freshness at room temperature decreased as pH increase from 5,68 to 6,11 along with a color change of smart label. Furthermore, the color would change when 0.022 %N of TVB has been reached. Therefore, chicken meat freshness can be determined by using a smart label based on a dual indicator of bromothymol blue and methyl red at room temperature

Level Glukosa Darah pada Mencit Diabetes Setelah Pemberian Ekstrak Rumput Laut Coklat (Phaeophyta)
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disorder of hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance caused by insulin deficiency or insulin disorder. Insulin hormone functions in the formation of glucose as an energy source. Consequently, glucose accumulates in the blood in DM patients and affects increased free radicals within the cell and oxidative stress. In DM patients with an imbalance of oxidants and antioxidants in his plasm, therefore, patients with DM require a large amount of antioxidants intake. One alternative treatment is seaweed. Brown seaweed contains bioactive components such as polyphenols and carotenoids, which exhibit antioxidants and reduce blood glucose levels. The study aimed to analyze the effect of brown seaweed extract on the blood glucose levels in diabetic mice. The study used a research design of pre and post-test control group design. The study was divided into 4 sample groups, namely the normal group, negative controls (diabetic mice), positive control (diabetic mice + 1.3 mg / 20 gr BB metformin), P1 (diabetic mice + brown seaweed extract). The seaweed dose of 10mg / 20grBB is given daily for 21 days. Blood glucose level checks using Glucometer and strip test (Autocheckâ„¢).
