Soil erosion is the most serious problem of land degradation in Indonesia. However, limited report has been documented. The erosion problem in Indonesia, particularly in Java, has been at an alarming rate. The fundamental 1 case of soil erosion is the rain effect upon the soil. Rainfall intensity and soil characteristics are related to soil erosion  and runoff The objective of this research was to study the relationship of rainfall intensity, soil erosion and runoff in latosol soil. An experiment was conducted using plot size 22 m in length and 2 m in width and 9 % slope. A field experiment was conducted with rainfall intensity observation for 3 months, to collect soil erosion and runoff in the soil collector. A laboratory experiment was done using rainfall simulator instruments with rainfall intensity of 2.3, 3.4, 4.5, 5.6 cm/hr and 8 % slope each with 3 replications. The result of the experiments showed that soil erosion was 3. J 4 t/ha and runoff was 33.20 m3/ha. When the rainfall size increased the soil erosion and runoff also increased. The correlation coefficient between £130 (Interaction 130 and energy) and soil erosion was positive. Key Words: Rainfall intensity, Soil erosion, Latosol soi

The objective of this research was to eliminate Sweet Potato Feathery Mottle Virus (SPFMV) infection from local superior sweet potato varieties (PN-II, Maria, Seri, and Numfor) by using meristem culture technique. Shoot tips of sweet potato were grown on solid MS modified medium enriched with naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and benzyl adenine (BA) with various concentrations. Growth and development of explants were recorded for three months. The results showed that elimination of SPFMV infection of four varieties by using shoot tip explants were successfully achieved. Shoot tips were the best explants used to eliminate SPFMV infection. Murashige and Skoog (MS) modification called Ub I medium, which enriched with NAA (0.02 mg/l) and BA (0.2 mg/l) is the best medium for developing meristem segment of sweet potato. Nitrocellulose membrane-enzyme linked immunosorbent  assay (NCM- ELISA) analysis showed that plantlets produced from shoot tip explants of four varieties, tested were free from SPFMV infection. The plantlets of four varieties were maintained in in vitro culture in Biotechnology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, State University of Papua (UNIPA), Manokwari. Key words: Sweet potato, SPFMV; Meristem culture techniqu

    Get PDF
Mangosteen has a good prospectus for international market. Many people in the world like this fruit because it is delicious, has high nutrient contents, and it can be consumed as a fresh fruit. The growth of mangosteen is very slow with a very long juvenile period because of its long dormancy period. The objective of this research was to study the dormancy periods and growth rhytm of shoot and root of young and adult mangosteen seedlings. The research used completely randomized design and consisted of two experiments. The first experiment was to study the dormancy and flushing periods. The second experiment was to study the growth patterns of shoot and root foom several ages of mangosteen seedlings. This research was conducted at Mekarsari Fruit Park, Cileungsi, Bogor. The result of the experiment showed that two years old of mangosteen seedling had 5 flushes per year, four years old of mangosteen had 3-4 flushes per year, and eight years old of mangosteen only had 2 flushes. Dormancy periods were significantly different between 2,4 and 8 year of mangosteen seedling. After the seedlings have branches, the dormancy periods become twice as many as that before branching. The roots grew rapidly two weeks before flush and slower after flush occurred.   Key words: Garcinia mangostana, dormancy, flush, seedlin

One of The Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center programs is to get superior varieties potato. The experiment was objected to study somaclonal variety of several introduced potato varieties in order to select superior varieties from them. The plant height, the number of node, and petiole length of Atlantic cultivar were significant different from somaclonal cultivars, even though the number of stem and internode length were not different. However the number and weight of tuber Red Pontiac, Desiree, Russet Burbank, and Eba significant different from those somaclonal cultivars, but not the Atlantic cultivar. According to the principal component analysis for seven quantitative variables of the 34 plants numbers, there were two principal variables. The both variables I.e. variable 1 and 2, were able to explain about 79.3 % of the total variation. Therefore using the first and second variables may be explained the most of data   variation. Somaclonal variation induced by irradiation were able to improve morfologis characters and yield, especially for Atlantic cultivar. Each of Atlantic and Red Pontiac somaclonal cultivar number had far relationship with their mother plants.   Key words: Somaclonal, Potat

Technical modification of rubber based intercropping system are still needed due to the appearance of various problems, either bio-physical or socio-economie factors. At different areas, where labour is limited, substitution of  manual tillage and manual seeding with mechanical equipment and manual weed control with chemical control has to be taken into account. Research on rubber based intercropping, combining two tillage systems. Conventional or full tillage, where soil was plowed and harrowed 2 and 2 times respectively,. and reduced tillage where soil tillage was done only one plowing and one harrowing and four liming levels atintercrop rows at 20 cm with (maize, variety of C7) was carried out in Sembawa Research Institute since 1998. The presented data were collected tillage system and liming dose was observed, however the grain yield difference was reduced up to 22%. During dry season cowpea (Vigna anguikulata), planted after maize, produced 870 kg/ha. The cost of production of cropping maize as rubber intercrop using full tillage system at optimal liming level was about Rp. 2,1 million. If the grain price is Rp. 1200/kg then the break-even point will be reached at grain yield of 1750k g/Ha. Rubber growth of IRR 39 clone, a latex and timber clone, was very good. Until 13 months stem diameter was  not affected by tillage systems and levels of liming for intercrop. Key words: Intercropping, Rubber, Maize, Cowpea, Soil tillage, Liming, Ultiso

The stufy on the initiation and proliferation of somatic embryos from papaya (C. papaya L.) zygotic embryo explants was undertaken. Best results regarding initiation of embryogenic callus formation was obtained with 90 days after pollination (DAP) zygotic embryos. The medium were liquid and solid MS (0.5) medium containing glutamine (2.7 mM), 2,4-D (9 µM) and sucrose (170 mM) at 6 and 10 weeks after the start of the cultures. In this condition 90% explains produced embryogenic callus formation. The best medium for proliferation of somatic embryos was a liquid MS (0.5) medium containing glutamine (2.7 mM), sucrose (170 mM) in the presence of 2,4-D (9 µM). Using this medium, somatic embryos proliferated three times higher within two weeks
